Been using #Handbrake to transcode tv show episodes into #AV1 from #HEVC. Took one episode down from 5.6gb to 384mb which was insane. Using very high quality settings, uses a lot of power/CPU so probably not worth it $-wise but hey, gotta use this machine for something!

There is renewed questioning whether the AV1 & AV2 codecs are patent encumbered and royalty-free or not pending the outcome of the Dolby vs. Snapchat lawsuit. I already use the AV1 codec and it works well. I'd be disappointed if it was no longer a royalty-free option.

I wonder what the hardware encode timeline is going to be this time, compared to #AV1.

After two weeks of wrangling, finally got the next batch of AV1 packages built for Arch into the repo. Should be back on the regular schedule of weekly releases unless something else rears its ugly head.

- Some packages require GCC 15 and absolutely hate GCC 16
- Zig 0.16 is not an option for a lot of stuff
- VapourSynth API v3 C headers are no longer included with the Arch Linux package, so had to grab those from the repo and get them to the right spot

A nice afternoon running some brutal encodes across the homelab. This is initial testing of the 5fist fork of the `svt-av1-psy` encoder with some pretty severe settings. Hoping that the results are worth the wait, but gotta wait until the first few results come out of the workers.

The madness continues. I'm working on getting Handbrake compiled with support for the SvtAv1 `psyex` fork, and after quite a few attempts and fixing a few patches I have it working. This will end up in the final `sisyphus-client:latest` container assuming the current tests pass. I have something similar I need to do with the `sisyphus-client:latest-essential` container with the `essential` SvtAv1 fork as well, but things are looking good.

Found out today that our national broadcaster #SVT is streaming their linear TV channels in 1080p50 (vs 720p50 on terrestrial and cable networks) and in #AV1!

People are seriously getting wrong why #AppleTV 2025 will ship with #A17Pro chip.

It's simple. I hate it - but it's simple - the A17Pro chip can do hardware accelerated decoding of #AV1. I dislike AV1. Mostly cos H265 is still great and the encoding tools are rock solid for it.

But that's enough to have them do it. The A15 Bionic can't do it. It's all software decoding...thus more RAM and more CPU cycles.
