On Platform-Building: Tips to Protect Yourself From Burnout

Building a platform can be so overwhelming… and maintaining one, equally so.

When you write a book, there’s an end in sight. You hit that word count, write “the end,” and then it’s done. You go through editing rounds, make all the changes you want, and then eventually have a polished book baby out in the world.

On the other hand, content creation and platforming never ends. Blog posts twice a week, social media posts daily… these are things I’ve somewhat constrained myself to for the time being, until some point of time when I choose to change it.

With platform-building and content creation taking up so much time and thought (I truly think this is the “daily grind” part of being an author), there are several tricks I’ve discovered help me stay on top of things and not get overwhelmed.

So… whether you already have an established platform, are trying to build one, or maybe even it’s something for future you, I hope you’ll find these tips helpful!

    1. Separate Ideation From Content Creation

This one goes for both blog content and social media content.

Ideation is honestly one of the most stressful parts of platforming for me. Recording a quick reel or throwing together a carousel on Canva doesn’t take me long (in most cases), nor does outlining a blog post. What winds up feeling daunting is coming up with the ideas for what to write or record or make a graphic of.

For this reason, I find it exceedingly helpful to keep lists of ideas for posts. When you’re in a space where you have some ideas, write them down. Sometimes this is where I use a bit of AI to generate a list of ideas I can pick and choose from or use as inspiration. Regardless, what matters is that coming up with an idea and executing said idea are done at two separate times.

Now, sometimes I do want to record a reel as soon as I have the idea, and I’m not against that. What I don’t love is when I haven’t pre-planned a post for the day and I have no idea bank to draw from… that’s where content creation feels very unmanageable for me.

    2. Prep Schedules in Advance

I started doing this for my blog a long time ago, and I’ve recently been *attempting* to implement it for social media as well (though I haven’t been as consistent).

Usually about halfway through the month before, I open my planner to the upcoming month and fill in all my Mondays and Thursdays with blog post ideas. I don’t hold myself to them all the time–sometimes I let inspiration change things up. But this is when I note where my guest posts/interviews will be and start sending out emails and such. This way, I literally just have to look at my planner to know what posts I need to write.

I started doing something similar on Google Calendar with social media posts, setting them up as daily tasks with a basic note of my idea, whether for a reel or carousel. As mentioned, I haven’t been as consistent, but I always find that when I do it, it takes a lot of the stress off.

Mind you, as you all know, I am a BIG planner and like to keep all my stuff organized, so if all that organization isn’t something that helps you feel good and would just stress you out, do what works best for YOU.

    3. Don’t Overthink It

I, of course, want my content to be of the highest quality possible. BUT, something that I have realized is… my time and my brain cells are sometimes worth more than a reel or carousel that’s going to get scrolled right past.

There have been plenty of times I’ve sat down to record a reel and had to restart more than five times, sometimes even over ten, because I wanted it to be just right.

But really, if the goal is consistency, it doesn’t need to be just right. It just needs to be there.

A trick I’ve found for recording reels, particularly ones where I’m actually talking into the camera, is to just pause between sentences, think through what I want to say next, and then speak. The Instagram app has a handy feature called “remove silences” that cuts the silent parts right out, and that way I don’t have to start and stop repeatedly to get everything to come out in one take. I can make sure I say things the way I want to say them… while remaining unscripted and relaxed.

    4. Save Posts You Could Easily Replicate

This is what I tend to do with trending ideas. I just save them (or save their audio), and then return to the idea later. This is another easy way to add ideas to your idea bank.

    5. Minimalize As Needed

Don’t overcomplicate everything. I have a handful of templates on Instagram that I use over and over. My blog graphics tend to look very similar to one another. Most of my book aesthetic photos are literally just taken on my bookshelf with a few random props from my room. I steal stuff I’ve previously written for my blog and turn it into Insta posts sometimes.

I may reach a point where I have to decrease how much I post, and that’s not something I’m afraid to do. I already did so on the blog: some of you may have been around way back when I still did Monday, Wednesday, Friday posts instead of Monday and Thursday. It’s okay (and important!) to recognize your limitations and honor them, even if that means taking a total break from blogging or social media.

    In Conclusion…

As I’ve said previously when I’ve talked about social media… have fun. Don’t let it control you. You are in charge, not the endless demands of the marketing life. If possible, try to incorporate these tips to make sure it doesn’t become overwhelming!

What does platforming look like for? How do you protect yourself from burnout? Which of these tips stands out to you today?

  32. Having a gloriously lazy day here, but a tiny professional PSA from your friendly neighbourhood linguist:

If any of you know of any work in translation, editing, proofreading, copywriting, content production, or anything similarly word-shaped, please let me know. 💜

I prefer English and German as target languages, but can accept work in French, Italian, Dutch, and several other European languages (please do inquire!).

Yes, I'll do language teaching as well. :)
(I am a qualified instructor for English and German)

I’m going to need some work over the next few weeks, so if you hear of anything, even a “hey, have you considered this?”, send it my way.

My bank account and I would both be extremely grateful. 😅

    Signal boost appreciated. 🫶
