  1. #protonmail has been having a rough day. Still touch and go for me.

Now... if only O365 went down, then I can get a free and quiet afternoon.

I haven't settled yet on what's a decent VPN alternative, although my current frontrunners are Njalla (run by a co-founder of The Pirate Bay) and Nebula by Defined.net. Not sure about their politics, but distributed and Nebula is FOSS which is a positive signal, while not a guarantee.

    What I've ruled out:
ProtonVPN - Actively working with government against activists
    Windscribe - Transphobic indications
Mullvad - Funding a fascist leaning party

I'd love to hear anything people have learned about the alternatives, either pro or against. Boosts appreciated for reach.

  7. Because of the fascist Mullvad CEO, I'm switching VPNs. I moved away from Proton when their CEO expressed support for Trump, another fascist party. I'm looking into IVPN...

    #mullvad #mullvadvpn #fascist #vpn #proton #protonvpn #trump #ivpn

  8. Mullvad VPN's CEO has been caught supporting Sweden's far-right political party. In fact, the CEO is the party's largest individual financial donor.

I would suggest IVPN ( @ivpn ) as an alternative. iVPN stays out of politics, except when advocating for privacy and opposing surveillance.

    That said...

When I previously pointed out that Proton VPN's CEO was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, or that Proton falls under U.S. jurisdiction, a group of people tried to perform mental gymnastics to defend Proton. They claimed that any alternative was no better or insisted that alternatives failed to meet whatever qualifying buzzwords they chose.

Today, I see those same types of people doing the same thing — defending Mullvad VPN while attempting to dismiss and degrade any suggested alternative.

The Fediverse has a group of politically right-leaning individuals who have learned not to express their support for fascism as directly, but instead to do so more passively in the hope of influencing others.

Standing up for companies led and owned by fascists while claiming "that's different" when comparing a company with the people leading it (Brave Browser, for example) is one way they encourage others to ignore what happens behind the scenes. Talking down alternatives that are not associated with fascism, or claiming they are no better for vague "reasons" (insert random excuse here), is another way these individuals encourage people to turn a blind eye.

No matter what alternative I or anyone else suggests, the important thing is that you choose one that does not support fascism. Don't turn a blind eye, and don't let someone else's mental gymnastics make you question whether you should switch providers.

La privacy sul web è sempre più difficile da difendere. Con le continue violazioni di dati e il tracciamento incessante, restare anonimi online è diventato cruciale. Ma puoi davvero ottenere un anonimato totale usando un servizio VPN gratuito? 🤔🛡️💻

  11. If you're trying to avoid the legality and jurisdiction of the United States, you should know:

Proton is subject to Us Jurisdiction.

If you need or want an alternative, I have a whole list of providers outside Us Jurisdiction

  12. CW: Let's play a game. Guess what popular company has this in their terms of services, now for their e-mail, vpn, calendar, password manager, and file storage:

After reading below (if you do), the question you should be asking is: How can the United States and their independent States Laws, impose on a company that is supposedly 100% all Switzerland?

They do not list Germany or France or any other country on the planet, just the United States (and Switzerland).

" You further agree that for any disputes, actions, claims, or other controversies arising out of or relating in any way to these Terms, your Account, the Services, your use of (or lack of use of) or access to (or lack of access to) your Account or the Services, or any advertising, promotion, or other communications between you and the Company, whether based in contract, warranty, tort, statute, regulation, ordinance, or any other legal or equitable basis, if brought in the United States and found to have jurisdiction in the United States, shall be construed and enforced in accordance with the laws of the state where you reside; provided, however, that the arbitration provisions herein shall be governed by the Federal Arbitration Act and the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) Consumer Arbitration Rules (the “AAA Rules”), as described more fully below in Section 13.1. "

The answer, by the way, is Proton. - Yes, a business can start in another country, Switzerland, for example, and fall under Us Jurisdiction. To put it another way, some people have dual citizenship, and so can a corporation.

You can find that quote directly on their website:

  13. A company truly outside Us Jurisdiction does NOT have terms and conditions concerning Us Customer and Us Laws, because they do not need them, because they do not apply to them. The same way, they do not need to include the other 200 or so, nations around the world.

It is rocket science. This is not hard to understand.

  14. " 200 or so, countries world-wide, and they only include terms and cite laws, that they know apply to them. "
So many corporate simps ignore this little fact.

Do you see Proton cite terms for Japan or Korea, or any other friendly nation? No, because Proton is only subject to the laws where they are a registered business. Proton only (and others like them) worries about the ones that apply to them, and they include the United States of America for a reason.

  15. Oh, I am aware of your simping trolling behavior for Proton, but I refuse to acknowledge your nonsense on my old account.

You do not get to pick and choose what laws you follow, and only when you feel they are connivent. That is not how laws work. Proton does not list any laws or bi-laws concerning, the "France" (random), for example, because they could, careless since they do not apply to them. They're not a registered business in "France" (random). The same way, I and most people here, don't care about what the laws are in North Korea, for example. Because they do not apply to most of us here.

There are over 200 independent states or nations or territories, or whatever, but you don't see terms and guidelines for all 200. The reason for this is that a business, like a person, only cares about the laws that apply to them. It is not rocket science.

Proton sells products and services to people in France, South Korea, Germany, Canada, Etc... Etc... Just as you could sell digital products and services to these people, but you would not need to put terms concerning each individual nation for each individual customer, because it would be the responsibility of your customer to follow their own laws, and the only laws that would apply to you are those you are subject to. Again, you don't see any business on the internet, listing terms for all 200 or so independent states, or nations, or territories, or whatever, but you do see them including only the ones that apply to themselves.

Proton, is subject to Us-jurisdiction and that is why they include terms and conditions surrounding US Laws. They'll argue that it only applies to Proton Wallet, but again, you don't get to pick and choose, when laws apply to an individual, anymore than you can a business. But even if it were true (it's not), they could still be influences and impacted by the laws and governing body of the United States, since they were not immune to them.

In contrast, I and most people here are immune to whatever goes on in, North Korea (random example). I can freely write all about how awful Kim Jong Un is, even though it is illegal to do so in North Korea. There is nothing legally stopping me, and no one within that governing body could ever influence me to stop either.

You like Proton. I am happy you found a provider you like. But you, choose to like or disliking Proton, does not change their legal standing.

  16. I do some things that don't want to appear to be from my location (and no, it's not [entirely] what you think).

But #CentryLink is blocking my ability to connect to my preferred VPN provider. That seems to run against the grain of #netneutrality really large way.

(Oh, not just my VPN provider of choice, but even #protonvpn or #torguard just get routed to the void... I see a #portforwarding trend developing)

  17. on Linux with breaks internet connectivity over and over again. Testing same on Android to see if same problem arises....
