Wow, I got the seeds collected from the wonderful lemony basil plans I grew to sprout! These seeds are very tiny. I used tweezers to plant two seeds each in 16 of these tiny starting cubes!
I will fill Saffron bed with basil in June when the Saffron has all gone dormant for the summer!

Thor sent this root vegetable special from New York City after attending Maira Kalman’s holiday sale. Weirdly wonderful, stored it in the fridge not sure exactly how to preserve it outside of a photograph. In hindsight I wonder if it may have found a forever life sealed in acrylic like those dandelion paperweights (see image below).

Curried #ButternutSquash and #Cauliflower Stew

Makes 8 cups stew + 4 cups rice"Whip up this colorful curry stew when squash season is in full swing. Cubes of sweet butternut squash get mouthwateringly tender as everything simmers on the stove and cauliflower rice absorbs the fragrant flavors of the Indian-inspired broth. Green bell peppers, carrots, and spinach add extra veggie goodness, while cilantro and fresh lime juice, added just before serving, brighten things up. Ladle a hearty portion over a bed of brown rice and enjoy a comforting meal that warms you up from the inside out.
Tip: To avoid going overboard on saturated fat, make sure to use refrigerated coconut milk beverage and not canned coconut milk for this recipe.
Ingredients1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
½ cup chopped carrot
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
4 teaspoons curry powder
2 cups unsweetened coconut milk beverage
1¼ lb. butternut squash, cubed
1 10- to 12-oz. package fresh cauliflower rice
1 5- to 6-oz. package baby spinach
2 tablespoons lime juice
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
Sea salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 cups hot cooked brown basmati rice
Lime wedges, sliced jalapeño peppers, and/or fresh cilantro (optional)
InstructionsIn a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven cook onion, bell pepper, carrot, and garlic over medium 4 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding broth, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, as needed to prevent sticking. Add curry powder; cook and stir 30 seconds. Add the remaining broth, the coconut milk, squash, and cauliflower rice. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 20 minutes or until squash is very tender.
Transfer 2 cups of the stew to a small blender or food processor. Cover and blend until smooth; return to pan. Stir spinach into stew; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until spinach is wilted and tender. Stir in lime juice and cilantro. Season with salt and black pepper.
Serve stew over basmati rice. If desired, serve with lime wedges, jalapeño peppers, and/or cilantro." -

#paperOfTheDay : "Phase transitions for phi^4_2 quantum fields" from 1975. This article is about the field theory with quartic interaction (hence, symmetric under a change of sign of the field variable) in two dimensions. This theory has the same universality class as the Ising model, which is known to have a phase transition. The purpose of the present article is to prove the existence of this phase transition from the perspective of #quantumFieldTheory .
The proof, essentially, proceeds by mapping the field to a lattice model: Introduce small cubes and compute the average field in them. Then, distinguish whether this average is positive or negative, and examine the length of the boundary between areas of positive and negative mean spin. This construction yields a rather coarse bound: The true field fluctuates more than the averaged cubes, but for questions of long-range correlation, the cubes will be sufficient. Friends, the long weekend continued to be full of care work all the way through, but as Adam remarked, if I had not been on holiday, the care work would still have been there -- and I would have also had the paid work to manage.
So at least I had free time to manage it?
There are some good things, though! I made soup and curry, and froze them both in some cake bar moulds (cheap versions of those popular 'Souper cubes' that are everywhere at the moment). This means I have nearly two dozen meals ready to defrost and eat as needed, huzzah!
I drove over to Denmark (the town not the country) and hung out with a friend for a couple of hours at her place. So good to catch up, we haven't seen each other for a couple of years. She's in the final gasps of her PhD so I was keen to hear her progress (and commiserate and cheer where appropriate).
Dad is doing better today and hopefully we'll hear back from his specialist about how we can modify his medication to prevent a repeat of the last few days.
And Kid1's friend is staying with us for a few days, a lovely guy, and we've had some good kitchen chats about food, religion, politics and childhoods. It's awesome 🥰

Pop taunted and insulted the audience throughout the entire show and was pelted with ice cubes, eggs, and beer bottles.
The band broke up for the first time a few weeks later.

Why bittersweet? Well, ten years ago Lee Spitler and I started developing a concept for a tiny Australian space telescope in a 6U CubeSat, intended to measure the extra-Galactic background light (EBL) at visible wavelengths. It would complement measurements at longer wavelengths from the likes of CIBER, and help to determine the origin of the observed EBL excess... Like VERTECS it used a small refracting telescope, a CMOS image sensor, and a focal plane mosaic filter to perform multiband imaging without moving parts.
We spent 6 or so years trying to get our "Australian Space Eye" mission funded, initially as a standalone 6U CubeSat and later on merged with the SkyHopper CubeSat, but we never succeeded.
So, the fact that another group decided to do something very similar to what we hoped to do and then got it funded by JAXA is validation that our general concept was sound. Which is nice. Also the science that we had planned to do will soon get done, so that's good. It could have been us doing all this though, and at least 5 years earlier too, and I am a little sad about that missed opportunity.
