" #MerrylGoldberg was a member of the #KlezmerConservatoryBand ( #KCB) in 1985 when she had the opportunity to go on a mission to the #USSR to meet with #humanrights #activist #musicians. #Goldberg, along with KCB leader #HankusNetsky, vocalist #RosalieGerut and mandolinist #JeffWarschauer, were to meet with the #PhantomOrchestra, a group of #Jewish and non-Jewish #activists. Their mission was to bring them everything from medicine to blue jeans and bubble gum and smuggle out information about the #refusnik movement.
In the context of the #ColdWar, to smuggle out information from the #SovietUnion was a perilous undertaking for the #klezmer band visitors and for the #Soviet #dissidents. What the #musicians needed was a secret #cipher system to collect the information they would gather during their trip. Their solution: to embed the information into written #music.

Their aim, Goldberg explains, was to create a “guidebook for the next generation on Jewish tradition”, with Eskin adding that they wanted it to be “a complete book that they could follow for the whole year..."
