having been adding to this tally over morning coffee most days since this, and so far I'm at 165 Jewish musicians who lived along this strip ~1910-25, of which ~45 are known klezmer musicians and ~55 are Progressive Musical Benevolent Society members. (the organization's office was right here.) so really if there were likely many hundreds or low thousands of klezmer musicians (?) in NYC in that era, it's not at all the majority of them.

I forget where I posted a thread about him on here, and good luck finding it with mastodon search, but ... in my new research looking into more potential klezmer musicians living along East 2nd St in Manhattan in the 1910s-20s I found a guy called Harry Loigsaltz. After getting confused by multiple appearances in directories I realized there were two Harry Loigsaltzes ... one being Harry Lubin👇

Here is Harry (a drummer born 1906 in New York) on the column of donors to the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society plot erected in 1939. His father Morris (a trumpeter born around 1865 in Russia somewhere) also lived at various addresses along east 2nd before and after WWI. (1/2)

trying to just follow my curiosity for my summer research without any particular goal, and I'm intrigued how many klezmer musicians lived on this two block stretch of East 2nd St in Manhattan during the 1910s-20s. I've counted about 90 so far and now poking around in the 1915 census to see who else.

have posted many times about the Fiedels on here I'm sure. Fred/Frank (b.1898 in Edineț, Bessarabia) was a violinist and one of several klezmer musician sons of Isaac Fiedel active in NY. love the violin on the grave

Cookie said, actually branches of her family were in the Veretskier landsmanshaft in NY and they hired Naftule Brandwein (celebrity clarinetist not at all from Nyzhni Vorota/Veretsky, he was from Przemyślany) & that he would diligently learn and play their local repertoire for them at their events.

salute to Dave Levitt for going to the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society plot at Beth Israel cemetery and taking about 150 photos for me, getting most of the ones I didn't have. (His parents' graves are in that section, so it was a courtesy to me while he was making a visit.) lots of fascinating details when you see the actual gravestones. (this is their other plot from my thread above)

this clarifies what happened to the grant I was involved with as a team member in that maybe hadn't reached active status and wasn't being defunded by this effort, although another Klezmer Institute project was, deemed as being DEI because it aimed to make music manuscripts accessible (🙄)
