George Cedar Brandman (1882–1963) was a cornetist & relative of the old klezmer recording artist Israel J. Hochman, who was also from Kamianets-Podilskyi. Here's a photo of Brandman and his orchestra in a 1949 publication of the Kamenetz-Podolier Relief Organization (YIVO archive).

back to the PMBS grave photos and seeing which ones I missed. These Marks are all related though I still haven't sorted out everything. Rochel Leah (1862–1944) is the mother, Simon (1890–1969) and Samuel (1884–1941) were the sons & both drummers, Joseph (1860–1937) possibly their half-brother.🤔the father Morris/Moshe I haven't come across is any US docs yet, possible he never came to America. original family name was apparently Markowitz.

I finally managed to get some of my June 2025 klezmer score orders from the LOC due to the diligent work of a Performing Arts librarian unconnected to my original request. It's mainly Polish/Ukrainian dances by the NY #klezmer Israel J. Hochman.
I added them to my big folder of LOC Klezmer, just filter by most recent to see them. Maybe not the most exciting if you are looking for exotic Klezmer, but polkas, waltzes and polonaises were also part of the repertoire...

enjoyed this Radiant Others interview with my friend Ilana Cravitz, London based klezmer violinist, all around cool dude.🤓🎻✨I only met her once on my stopover in London, but we became good online friends during the 2020 lockdowns—a dynamic they get into in the interview, many such cases.

uploading all 151 photos of the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society plot at Beth Israel Cemetery that Dave Levitt took for me a few months ago, in case it's helpful for any actual genealogy people. getting a bit of schooling transliterating some more old timey Hebrew names of their 19th century parents

this family band gets a brief mention in the Rohatyn Yizkor book (in Hebrew) https://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/collections/yizkor-books/yzk-nybc313962/amitay-mordekhai-sztokfisz-kehilat-rohatin-veha-sevivah-ir-be-hayyeha-uvi-khilyonah
translated to English here
https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/rogatin/roh132.html#Page140as far as I can tell Jacob was the only son of this family to come to New York, or at least to become a musician there

another find relating to this E 2nd St thing is that one of the sons of the Faust klezmer family from Rohatyn, Galicia came to New York in 1900 and settled around here (at 8–10 Avenue B during the oughts, and moved up to E 4th St till he died in 1916). most likely him with the trumpet in this photo although it's hard to be 100% sure.

A unique #theatrical #performance inspired by #Yiddish #folktales features dead #Jews dancing at a cemetery, a prophet appearing in the form of a bunny rabbit and a stone-munching worm named Shamir. It all takes place within the confines of a 2’ X 4’ box known as a #cranky and it’s coming to #NewYork later this month as part of the International #Puppet #FringeFestival.
For those unfamiliar with the decidedly low-tech medium, #crankies are portable stages through which a panorama is scrolled by cranking a pair of wooden dowels. The characters and scenery on the scroll are usually accompanied by #narration and #music, in this case a live #klezmer trio. In backlit crankies, #shadowpuppets can also be used for characters.
The cranky performance of #ShternaandtheLostVoice was created by the #MagidEnsemble, a far-flung interdisciplinary collective that includes a #storyteller, a #graphicartist and three former members of the #Boston klezmer band #Mamaliga."

finally finished my latest blog post which I've been working on for the last few weeks after I got interested in E 2nd Street and its klezmer connection.
I definitely went from "wow this is neat" to "WTF am I doing" over the past month, but I may as well document it🤪

Transcribing part of a 1970s interview with Louis Grupp that Henry Sapoznik sent me last year, to include a quote or two from it in my upcoming blog post. Eventually I should ask his permission to transcribe and post the whole thing as it has so many fascinating historical vignettes. 🧵

RE: https://klezmor.im/@carkner/116876668089661420
having been adding to this tally over morning coffee most days since this, and so far I'm at 165 Jewish musicians who lived along this strip ~1910-25, of which ~45 are known klezmer musicians and ~55 are Progressive Musical Benevolent Society members. (the organization's office was right here.) so really if there were likely many hundreds or low thousands of klezmer musicians (?) in NYC in that era, it's not at all the majority of them.

Loeffler has gone in a very different research direction lately but I definitely recommend his book "The Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the Late Russian Empire" (2010)

I forget where I posted a thread about him on here, and good luck finding it with mastodon search, but ... in my new research looking into more potential klezmer musicians living along East 2nd St in Manhattan in the 1910s-20s I found a guy called Harry Loigsaltz. After getting confused by multiple appearances in directories I realized there were two Harry Loigsaltzes ... one being Harry Lubin👇

Two of the musicians from this East 2nd cohort have maddeningly variable spelling on their family name lol. Here is Harry (a drummer born 1906 in New York) on the column of donors to the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society plot erected in 1939. His father Morris (a trumpeter born around 1865 in Russia somewhere) also lived at various addresses along east 2nd before and after WWI. (1/2)

I'm going to make a video of a new song soon. Just a simple thing, political, of the moment. Solo. One camera, one take. What common mistakes have you noticed (besides using AI of course) that people make when they post their new songs? #music #youtube #peerTube #klezmer #folkmusic

trying to just follow my curiosity for my summer research without any particular goal, and I'm intrigued how many klezmer musicians lived on this two block stretch of East 2nd St in Manhattan during the 1910s-20s. I've counted about 90 so far and now poking around in the 1915 census to see who else.

Salute to this new #Klezmer band with the clunkiest band name that for once isn't a portmanteau of klez and something random

I'd be surprised if I didn't post this before somewhere, but I can't find it ... an ad in the Forverts in 1917 for a Bessarabier Arbeter Ring branch with the Fiedel Brothers Union Orchestra playing for it. Fred & his brothers were most likely the musicians.
