Wann immer ich diese Klänge höre, muß ich daran denken, wie Glenn Gould vor jedem Konzert seine Hände in heißes Wasser tauchte. Diese großen, weißen Hände, die sein Kapital waren als Pianist – auch wenn er einmal sagte: „Klavier spielt man nicht mit den Händen, sondern mit dem Kopf.“ Aber er konnte ja nicht seinen Kopf in heißes Wasser halten. Eine halbe Minute vielleicht, aber nicht eine Viertelstunde.

Ashby on Gould: "An imaginative mind taking an example of common-practice music and teasing out its textual possibilities to extremes, risking incursions into the bizarre and the arbitrary, and testing the various prospects for coherent musical wholes that may or may not have anything to do with the composer’s thinking."
