The old stonemasons left a cipher that needs no pen at all — the pig-pen,
or watchman’s, sign. Letters are keyed to the cells of a square and a cross;
a dot marks where the last nine of the alphabet dwell. A scrap reached me this
morning scored in eight such signs:
