Nobody knows what is going to happen because so much depends on an enormous amount of variables, or, in other words, on hasard. On the other hand, if you look back on history, then retrospectively, even though all this was contingent, you can tell a story that makes sense. How is that possible? That is the problem for every philosophy of history. How is it possible that in retrospect things always look as though they could not have happened otherwise?
