Went to a second hand store today, and as all boardgame geeks know they're usually wastelands of old quiz-games from the 90s and endless kid's games from all eras. But today I found this little gem - nice!

I had a very old edition of this way back when, complete with three expansion packs that I got rid of as I had no one to play with at the time. Something I regretted for ages.

Some thoughts on the Breakout Normandy #boardgame.
We played the L2 Design Deluxe edition rather than the original #avalonhill edition. The L2 edition counters are larger and clear but the card map is definitely not deluxe compared to the AH edition. Single piece card map is not better than the larger two piece mounted map. The map gets rather busy in places.
We also yellow and pink bingo chips/tiddlywinks as disruption markers in place of those supplied with the game.

Amazing resale shop find. $4. Looks complete. Not sure about the actual hand typed (not a dot matrix output) rules. Custom? Or just a summary? I dunno. The former owner was organized. He had chits all separated into different boxes. Probably played it a fair deal! I think many of us of a certain age cut some of our gaming teeth on these amazing Avalon Hill classics before stumbling into D&D.

It’s the 80th anniversary of D-Day very soon. So a great excuse to get a #boardgame about D-Day onto the table. Namely, Breakout Normandy by L2 Design. It is a slightly tweaked “deluxe” edition of the classic #avalonhill game. The map is area based with most units being brigade/regiment sized. I took the role of Monty to control the Brits & Canucks and bossed the yank player Bob about no end. Karl & Bob shared the German side.

Anzio basic game end of scenario.
Allies win with 6 of 8 victory cities (they needed 5), Salerno, Napoli, Foggia, Termoli, Pescara, and Casino.
Didn't reach Terracina or Roma.
After they secured four, it seemed like the Germans had formed a solid defensive line which would have required a second invasion behind the defenses, but then the Allies broke through along the East coast so that wasn't required.
I will have to try the advanced game sometime. Fun system
