  1. a few years ago i imported a copy of Cadaver from the UK.

it's one of those beautifully animated Bitmap Brothers games that was impossible to find on this side of the pond, so we grew up without the finer things in life

only today did i notice it has the most british promotion on the front cover.

buy 5 mirrorsoft games, and get a 2 night stay at some mortifying seaside hotel with human stains on the walls.

"You just pay for the meals!" has this perfect british skinflintery to it that i adore. like paying for the dessert and then asking your date to pay for the entrée. 🤌

  7. til: Microprose added a sticker to copies of Railroad Tycoon sold in canada, to pander to us chuds living north of the border. congrats Regina, yer finally a major canadian city! 👏

the sticker does not mention that the cities barely appear at the extreme north edge of the map, making canada almost completely unplayable

  8. I'm curious what the Fediverse would recommend as a resource for learning MS-DOS in 2026.

I have limited exposure to it having grown up mostly on Windows 9x, but I use a Linux CLI and these days, I always opt for Powershell in the rare cases where I use Windows because it supports Unix-like commands. As such, I'm very limited on what I know about using DOS.

I see some tutorials on Youtube, I'm just curious what y'all think.

  13. 💾 NEW PODCAST!💾 Back in February we looked at ZZT, the very first game by (what would become) Epic MegaGames, released in 1991 and developed by Tim Sweeney.

Just like Epic's Unreal Engine today, ZZT was a game creation system. It was a lot more basic, offering only text-based graphics and PC speaker beeps, but it did spawn thousands of games over the years, so there's a lot to talk about!

  14. anyone else obsessively play The Incredible Machine growing up?

when i was a teenager, it was pretty rare to have games that ran in VGA/EGA hi-res modes. so whenever i came across one, it was a rare treat.

TIM runs in 640x440 using non-square pixels. that's already a fairly uncommon graphics mode in its time.

even weirder: the original diskette for it reads "256 color" on it. except..... the game isn't 256 colours! not even close. it is a *16 colour game*. it uses the standard EGA palette colours with one tweak: it replaces screaming pink magenta with a warm gold.

it manages pull off the 256-colour-like look through dithering. zoom in to the screenshots to see how the artist creates really beautiful texture and colour ramps using just 2-3 colours. (e.g. the gold plating in the first pic)

Das Ganze läuft hier bei mir gerade einwandfrei in 86Box, PC-DOS 2000 und dem frisch installierten TEAC CD-ROM Treiber.

This one needs about 14KB of memory, which is a bit more than other drivers, but still significantly smaller than what the Creative Labs CD drivers takes up. Not such a big deal, since I can still load it into the system's upper memory.

  26. today's dose of software history: Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? by Brøderbund

i wonder how many kids never got to see the physical box contents, because they played it in a school classroom, or borrowed the disks from a friend.

this is one of those games where having the physical box contents was imperative, because you couldn't play the game without them. the game came with a *thick* paperback copy of New American Desk Encyclopedia, printed specifically for the game.

in order to progress through each investigation (and track down the thief), you have to hunt for clues by looking up objects, places, and eras in the encyclopedia.

the best part of the game is that learning about other people and places around the world is incidental to the act of playing the game. you're never grilled for memorized facts, and your ability to progress is limited only by logical deduction and encyclopedia entry lookups.

the rear box cover art is a masterwork of false tableaux design - they even spent the time to build a fake chronoskimmer to complete the effect.

  31. Update: thanks everyone for your responses. Sadly, this book proposal generated very little interest here and elsewhere, so I won't be proceeding. Hopefully someone else takes on the job some day :)

    -----------

this project has been warming for years, and i'd like to gauge public interest in it.

it's hard to think of a more influential game than Ultima VII: The Black Gate. to this day, CRPG designers still talk about how they wish they could build a modern counterpart to Ultima VII, or how aspects of their design were deeply influenced by it.

after 34 years, the ship has long since sailed on seeing any kind of real successor. worse, to me, is that players now haven't even *heard* of it aside from random nods it gets in youtube videos

U7 was built, from scratch, by a handful of programmers, scripters, artists and composers at Origin in the early 90s. i'd like to pull apart the engine, the world editor, the VooDoo memory manager, and the various tools used to create assets, and explore how each of these are weaved together to create the game.

it would be written as a book, with chapters devoted to different aspects of the engine. something like fabien sanglard's Game Engine Black Books

if this is the kind of book you'd read, i'd love to hear it. if there's something specific you'd like me to cover, i'd love to hear that too.

i realize that this is an *extremely* specific hardcore and obscure topic. it's totally okay to say "nah, don't waste your time dude because i'd never read that." :)

  32. after 15 years of waiting for a copy i could afford, i finally have an original copy of an underrated graphical adventure: Inherit The Earth - Quest for the Orb.

this is one of those strange games that gets dismissed by adventure gamers because it never cleanly fits into established genres. the mix of traditional 2d side-view art and isometric tile-based adventuring is in itself unique to this game. it pays off with a strong world/setting, and a surprisingly interesting final chapter.

you really get the feeling that the team *cared* about this project, and wanted you to enjoy what they made. because of this, the originality and authenticity more than make up for the (at times) uneven craftsmanship.

April Lee's ink illustrations in the manual were a welcome surprise. you might recognize her work from card games like Warhammer and MTG. less well known is that she was a staff artist at New World Computing, on several Might & Magic games, including HoMM. and then also did contract work for the Dreamers Guild.

best of all, one of the Dreamers Guild founders - Joe - continues to support the game with patches and new versions for Mac/Windows/Linux every year:

  38. Thanks to a recent upload to the Internet Archive from "LazArchive", I could finally put together a set of compatible MS-DOS 3.31 floppy disks. The COMPAQ FASTART utility disk from 1989 finally works as intended using the COMPAQ User Programs v6.01 Rev B. This never worked for me before, so it's a huge improvement! 😃

MS-DOS v3.31 is a particularly useful version of DOS, because it was the first version to support a partition size of over 32MB... up to 512MB!

Bunch of kinda criticisms of Wolf 3D in this piece here, but also some interesting insights on playing one handed by using the mouse with sensitivity turned up fully (and of course using a map). I'm so used to keyboard, but thinking now, when I played it on a Mac in the 90s, I may have messed with using a mouse for it some.

  40. I ran a few 86Box virtual machines on the MacBook Neo to check out its emulation capabilities. Everything works quite nicely, from discovering my existing retro machines, running all kinds of DOS games, MT-32 music emulation, even the floppy drive sounds.

The emulation performance seems to be very respectable for an A18Pro iPhone chip. I went through several virtual systems, from a slow 386SX all the way up to a Pentium MMX 233MHz and even, just for testing, a Pentium II 300MHz. The performance meter never dipped below 100% and everything did work as expected. I believe, this is VERY good news for retro gaming on this budget MacBook.

    Conclusion: I'm very happy!
