So i'm going through the EGABIOS.ROM and we know it has two fonts: 8x8 for the lo-res modes and 8x14 for the hi-res modes. I'm making a TTF font from these ROM bitmaps, and I'm reviewing the characters; in particular the shade characters at 0xB0 0xB1 0xB2 (now called LIGHT/MEDIUM/DARK SHADE in Unicode).

Looks fine in 8x14 (on left); looks corrupt on 8x8 (on right). In particular 0xB2 does not have a regular 3/4 grid.

I checked that my tools were correctly converting the ROM bitmaps, they were. I checked that the ROM bitmaps were as listed in the IBM EGA Manual, they were.

Did it really display like that on an actual PC with EGA card? (i don't know, but i did get an emulator to show me; see following post).

More later, but i'd love it if someone with an EGA card could put it in the 320x200 mode and display samples of character 0xB0 0xB1 and 0xB2. [edit: At least on DOSBox-x you can do this at the DOS prompt with Alt-176 Alt-177 Alt-178; pictures follow]

Oh cool… hab mir grad für nicht mal 18€ einen kompletten Satz „Zak McKracken“ Disketten ersteigert. Das müsste die deutschsprachige EGA Version aus dem Jahre 1988 sein. Normal gehen die doch deutlich teurer weg. Muss jetzt halt warten. Ich bin gespannt und hoffe, die Disketten sind noch gut lesbar.

Cool, so. It turns out YOU can create your own copy of the BIOS ROM for the IBM Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) using the zip on this archive.org upload https://archive.org/details/6277356-ega-bios-source/

It contains the listings (from the IBM EGA manual i suppose, which included them), and shell scripts to compile them. The script runs on Unix and uses the `emu2` program to run the text-mode DOS programs (MASM.EXE and LINK.EXE which are included in the zip). I had to clone and compile emu2 myself (just like the good old days).

Possibly there were a Pine grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator, щур обыкновенный) birds — I saw both rose-red and olive-yellow birds in the same flock and they were eating the rowans.

Photos were taken on the outskirts of Saint-Petersburg (Russia, not Florida). The birds were completely ignoring my presence — they were busy eating the rowans, so I managed to come close enough — at near 1-1.5 meters before the birds decided to fly away. Not sure, did they made this because of fear of me, or just decided to eat some new berries.

Tonight, I'm checking out an old Sierra adventure game I never played before: "The Colonel's Bequest" from 1989.

86Box is such an awesome, little emulator. I can just fire up the virtual 386, mount the 720k floppy disk images into drive A:, pick the best graphics (EGA/VGA) and music device (MT-32) and everything just works just like that!

As a retro gamer, I think this is such a treat! :ablobcatattention:
