Can't remember if I ever beat this as a kid, but listening to the #DosGames Club podcast inspired me to whip out the #DosBox again and explore some of my old favs.

Monuments Of Mars (1991) was such a unique game in my childhood collection with its orange and green colour scheme and it's one-screen puzzles.

I'm curious what the Fediverse would recommend as a resource for learning MS-DOS in 2026.

I have limited exposure to it having grown up mostly on Windows 9x, but I use a Linux CLI and these days, I always opt for Powershell in the rare cases where I use Windows because it supports Unix-like commands. As such, I'm very limited on what I know about using DOS.

I see some tutorials on Youtube, I'm just curious what y'all think.

Bumpy's Arcade Fantasy. Одна из моих первых игр на ПК. Нам давали в неё играть, на ряду с Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion на уроках информатики после того, как закончим задания. Благо, вторая у меня есть в наличии в GOG. Старшему брату повезло тогда больше. Им давали играть в Quake 2, который я прохожу в данный момент, имея копию в том же GOG. Обидно осознавать, что игры раньше были чем-то больше, чем просто деньги. Хотя, возможно, я просто старею и просыпается Синдром Утёнка.

Still refactoring and have to make it work on real iron, but my 3D engine already works on #dosbox . For now it supports Linux, #Dreamcast and DOS / #FreeDOS

30+ years later MechWarrior 2's planetary mission startup still gives me goosebumps. never heard a better Betty/voice warning system voice in a game since this one, period.

just seeing a dos game running in 1024x768 in 1995 was an awe-inspiring experience

Anyone looking for a simple and easy upgrade to their DOSBox experience should upgrade to the @freedosproject command-line interpreter called FreeCOM.

It's a beautiful thing that essentials like these still receive updates and bug fixes. You get numerous improvements when you switch to this, and it only takes up 2 KB of conventional memory to run.

For the first time in ages, I've had a good afternoon writing code!

I've been working on #ecobj. I can now analyse six OMF record types (well, five and a bit) using some rough-and-ready Pascal. And I've started to get a picture of how the original ECOBJ.EXE moves the records around.

As far as I know, there are 10 record types that ECOBJ.EXE handles. So I'm over halfway there. Sort of.

Using the #TopSpeed Object Disassembler (TSDA) has really helped to make sure I'm heading in the right direction. #DOSBox makes this easy by letting me send the output from TSDA.EXE to a file, so I can view it on Linux.

I just completed "Christmas Tree Farm" - Day 12 of #AdventOfCode in #TurboPascal. Only in #DOSBox for now, until I get back home and run it on the real #Xi8088 hardware.

I can already tell that parsing the input file will take a lot longer than solving!

I just completed "Movie Theater" - Day 9 of #AdventOfCode in #TurboPascal on the #Xi8088 and I'm quite proud of my solution!

I got the logic right for part 2 nearly immediately but plain brute force was way too slow: I had to crank up the CPU speed in #DOSbox quite a bit just to test it.

Doing some precalc (likely not the same as what other people did 😉) on the input and re-thinking data structure helped a huge lot, going from 1 hour to less than 4 minutes!
