Any Windows for Workgroups 3.11 experts in the audience?
If my network cable is unplugged I get "EMM386 has detected error #06 in an application at memory address 00B8:1460" and Windows won't start. Ethernet card is a Realtek NE2000-type PnP ISA card.
Anyone know of a fix? Other than keeping a second system.ini with networking turned off?

Small update on my #Thinkpad 755C. I put in a 4GB CF-Disk (8GB isn't supported by the BIOS) and installed #MSDOS 6.22 with #Windows311 on one partition and #Windows95 on a second partition.
It was a bit painful to find all necessary drivers, and the #DOS driver for the soundcard is almost unusable - mostly distorted and when speech is output, the laptop freezes. The Windows 95 drivers are better, but I haven't gotten the DOS games to use them, yet.
Also, some games like #Albion or #TheSettlers don't like the Western Digital graphics card.
But a lot of the old games I liked work fine, like #MightAndMagic 4/5 and #IndianaJones 3 and 4. It's more a nostalgia project, I know the games work better using DOSBox or Wine.

People of a certain age may remember installing Windows 95. (I'd forgotten, honestly.) Microsoft allowed upgrades from DOS and Windows 3.1, but they didn't want a text-mode installer for their shiny new GUI-based operating system. So what did they do? They made a three-stage installer!
DOS users had a tiny copy of Windows 3.1 temporarily installed. Then, them and Windows 3.1 users had a tiny copy of Windows 95 installed. Finally, most of the setup ran in Windows 95. Microsoft's Raymond Chen explains this clever design in detail.

Some time ago, there was someone writing a Windows 3.11 specific emulator. It was not open source. I cannot find it - anyone know what it was?

i am blown away by this *shareware* tile-based adventure game creation toolkit from 1995 called Adventure Gamer
built for windows 3.1, it allows you to create your own top-down adventure-RPG games using a drag and drop interface.
it comes with a demo game called The Gates of Macrohard, which plays like similar Windows 3.1-based RPGs of its time, like Castle of the Winds or Exile.
The editor is full-featured, including even the ability to export your game as a distributable EXE!
it appears to have been built with MS Visual Basic 3.0, judging by the VBRUN DLL included.
