Ich hatte gestern noch ein paar Experimente mit neuen 3,5 Zoll Laufwerken gemacht und konnte einen deutschsprachigen Satz Windows 3.1 Disketten neu und vollständig per Greaseweazle auslesen. Die Datenträger stammen vom 4. August 1993.

Even though Greaseweazle reads this Amiga disk of "Space Quest" without any issues with 100% valid sectors, there's still an on-disk copy protection scheme hidden inside there. I just ran into a crash trying to boot from the simple 880K ADF Amiga DOS disk image. 🥺

Fortunately, using a CT-RAW disk image, made from the .raw streams, worked just fine and started the game. 😉

I got my hands on another brand-new 3.5inch disk drive. The ALPS DF354H148F from 2003 just did a perfect job, reading IBM-PC, Mac 800K and Amiga 880K diskettes. Using a Greaseweazle V4.1 and/or KryoFlux board.

Hab grad mein SONY MPF 920 nochmal mit viel Mühe geputzt und dann erfolgreich mit Greaseweazle getestet.

Das Ding sieht eigentlich aus wie ein ganz normales, langweiliges 3,5 Zoll Diskettenlaufwerk, läuft aber im Unterschied zu den allermeisten Modellen mit 360rpm, statt mit den sonst üblichen 300rpm. War wohl einer der letzten Laufwerke, die 2009 nochmal was innovatives für Disketten umgesetzt hatten.

Oh, well.. I'd say the project of getting a Greaseweazle controller to complement the KryoFlux board was pretty much a success! On this first day alone, I generated over 600MB of fresh raw flux streams from physical floppy disks. I dumped all sorts of diskettes for IBM-PC and Amiga. 360K, 720K, 880K, 1.200K and 1.440K, mostly without any hiccups.

Also, "sharing is caring". I do care. 😉

Looks like Greaseweazle, controlled by the latest DiskImageTool GUI, has no issues working with 5.25" 360K floppy disks. I had to put some work into cleaning the 40-track disk drive, but as soon as that worked, everything went smoothly! 😍

Hatte vor einigen Tagen die eher dumme Idee, ein paar sehr alte 5 1/4 Zoll Disketten auslesen zu wollen. Die Datenträger sahen auf den ersten Blick noch gut aus, waren aber oberflächlich wohl derartig verschmutzt, dass mein 360K Laufwerk nach dem Versuch gar nichts mehr lesen konnte.

Ich hab’ jetzt fast eine Stunde damit verbracht, das Ding aufzuschrauben und beide Leseköpfe vorsichtig mit ein wenig Alkohol und Q-tips zu reinigen.

Hurrah! Es geht wieder! 😜

I just started a new folder on the Internet Archive, where I will upload various floppy disk dumps, made from my Greaseweazle. Mostly stuff already available somewhere else, but dumped as raw Greaseweazle streams. I will add more stuff to this folder over time, but this will always be pretty much unsorted, quick & dirty. You get the idea... 😉

Okay, das ist echt ein Vorteil vom Greaseweazle im Vergleich zum KryoFlux: Das Ding funktioniert A) schon mit USB-C und liefert B) tatsächlich selbst den Strom zum Betrieb von zumindest den 3,5 Zoll Laufwerken. Damit spart man sich den eigenen Stromanschluss für das Laufwerk und kann das Setup so viel einfacher auch auf den Schreibtisch legen. Find ich extrem nice! 😎

I just used the latest "DiskImageTool" to look into that .a2r disk image from Space Quest II 2.0D. And yes, these free clusters are actually filled with source code. Lots of it! Fascinating!

Nice! I just found working sets of "Applesauce A2R" and "HxC HFE" disk images of "Space Quest II" on the Internet Archive! As with many games from the 80s, these SQ2 disks are copy-protected! Their addition makes my collection even more EPIC! 😎

Ooops! Sieht so aus, als wäre die Diskette 4 meiner deutschen Version von PC DOS 6.3 auf den Spuren 78.1 und 79.1 leider komplett unleserlich.

Hab's erst beim Vergleich mit der Upgradediskette bemerkt. Die Spur 79.1 enthielt zum Glück nur leere Cluster (F6F6...) aber die Spur 78.1 verstümmelt die Datei SCHEDULE.OV1 komplett, sodass sich das Programm nicht mehr starten ließ. Glücklicherweise ist das aufgefallen und konnte repariert werden! 😉

I was just listening to ATP Podcast, June 30 eposide, "And Do What?" (I'm a little behind in my listening).

The title is taken from the "Ask ATP" section of the show where someone wrote in asking what three vintage computers the hosts would like, if offered.

Responses were mixed, but early Macs and iOS devices were the main units discussed (and Casey's ThinkPads). Also discussed are those who just collect as an end in itself, and those who actually use these old systems. Getting them online was a big question for Marco.

I know I'm a little older than John, but I was surprised that no Apple II, C64, Atari 8-bits, etc. were mentioned, and I'm looking mainly at Marco who had the most to say about setting them up "and do what" then. How do you get programs onto these pre-internet computers?

I wanted to point out that there are a great many modern devices that make vintage computing much more approachable than the uninitiated may be aware of. I am the sort of collector that is primarily interested in using these systems, once acquired, and I have a room full of them -- most older than the systems discussed in the episode:

For most of my floppy-based systems, I've added various flash-based floppy disk emulation hardware and HD/large volume emulation hardware for others. Apple IIe, IIgs, TI-99/4A, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, my Amigas, NeXTstation, DOS 486, Tandy 1000, etc. As well, a few "WiFi modems" (serial to WiFi using ESP32 tech) get passed around to let them connect to my modern systems or the internet directly. There's a great deal of modern, enabling hardware for those in the hobby.

I use these systems quite often. None are my daily drivers, but one or two is usually on, doing something, on any given day. I'm not browsing the web on these, but demos, games, chat clients, data (tracker mods, video, etc.) streaming -- there's even a Mastodon client running on my 5x86 that actually does the TLS locally and supports image attachments.

There's a lot you can do with systems rather older than those discussed on the show, I'm here to say. :-)

Using software written in 2026 (by @colin_mcmillen) on a computer released in 1983 to extract digital photos from a digital camera released in 1994.

Apple QuickTake 200 connected via serial to my 128K enhanced Apple IIe (video output via composite to CRT and to LCD via VidHD video card) with "large" volumes mounted via CFFA3000 flash storage card.

The 640x480 camera images (JPEGs) are decoded and scaled for display in the double high-res graphics mode at 560x192 monochrome pixels. Just lovely.
