Today, I spent some time playing an old PC game called WELLTRIS. I guess, this was supposed to be a successor to the game TETRIS. It's from 1989 and was presented on 2 x 360K 5.25inch floppy disks. It still works perfectly. Screenshots were made using the beautiful EGA graphics mode. 😍

I know... for many people, this game is literally from the ancient past, but I'm still a huge fan of the original CGA PC version of "Maniac Mansion" from 1988. Back then, the entire game existed on a single 360K 5.25 inch floppy disk!

Es handelt sich um wirklich sehr gut erhaltene 5 1/4 Zoll HD-Disketten aus dem Sommer 1990. Wie immer alles sauber gescannt in 300dpi mit .img Disk Images und vollständigen KryoFlux Streams. Getestet und überprüft in 86Box.

Okay, here's a long shot for the #Fedi hive mind. If you are in the intersection of "#musician or musician-adjacent in the 1980s" and "keyboard / #synthesizer aficionado", this one is for you.

In the mid- to late-80s, I used to spend a lot of time in music / #instrument stores (not selling CDs, selling guitars and amps and drums and whatnot). Synthesizer tech was advancing rapidly at this point, with digital starting to overtake analog by leaps and bounds.

At some point, one of the stores got a new #keyboard model in. I can't swear to it, but I think it was either a #Roland or a #Korg. This one had a floppy drive built in, on the side of the #synth. And they had a demo on a floppy disk that was incredible at the time.

It wasn't an official #demo disk. It was a normal consumer floppy, presumably copied far and wide. Hand-Sharpied on it was the name/title "Amin Phone". It was a musical, bright and upbeat piece, rock/pop, maybe 30s long, and included digital samples of a person's voice.

The entire thing was a ridiculous #answering machine outgoing #message. I think there was even a sampled voice at the end taken from someone leaving a message, commenting on it being over-the-top or something.

"Amin phone" is unsearchable on the 'net. Everyone has a phone, and there are millions of people named Amin or el-Amin.

Anyone else remember this? Anyone actually able to point to a recording of it?

Konnte heute einen wirklich schönen Satz an deutschsprachigen Windows 3.0 Disketten ergattern. Insgesamt fünf 5 1/4 Zoll 1200K HD-Disketten. Produktionsdatum war der 27.07.1990, also vor mittlerweile über 35 Jahren. KryoFlux bestätigt, dass alle Daten unverändert und perfekt lesbar sind.

A 386 at 25MHz and 4MB RAM is the perfect system for playing the original Wing Commander. The game was super sensitive to the CPU speed and often ran way too fast on modern CPUs... like a 486DX! 😂

Earlier tonight, I was searching the web for the official Compaq diagnostics disk to add a Compaq Deskpro 386/25 to my collection of 86Box virtual machines. This machine's from the late 80s and it does not have anything like a BIOS settings menu, but instead uses a bootable floppy disk instead.

Great success! I did not only find working disk images, but I even managed to download the original files from Compaq to create these disks in the first place. In both 3.5" and 5.25" versions! The files are named "SP0308.EXE" and "SP0316.EXE".

I'm reallly grateful to the community for preserving these files! 😃

Hier noch ein weiteres, eher spezielles Retro-Sammlerstück, diesmal aus dem Jahre 1992: Ein OEM Diskettensatz von Windows 3.1 mit Dienstprogrammen und Branding des PC-Herstellers COMPAQ.

Eine Installation dieser Disketten ist - sofern man keine Fehlermeldung auslösen möchte - nur auf Computern mit COMPAQ BIOS möglich. Ansonsten wird beim ersten Start ein "Segment-Lade-Fehler" durch das Programm CPQINST.EXE ausgelöst. Um dies zu vermeiden, genügt allerdings auch schon ein emuliertes COMPAQ System, wie z.B. der "Compaq Deskpro 386" in 86Box.

Hab tatsächlich lange überlegt, ob ich das hier überhaupt hochladen sollte:

Eine noch unfertige, nur für PC-Hersteller bestimmte OEM-Boot-Diskettenvorlage für Windows 95 SR-2. Noch ohne CD-ROM-Treiber, aber mit Anleitungen und OEM-Hinweisen zur Installation in AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS und DRVCOPY.INF durch den jeweiligen OEM-Partner.

Kopiert man eine funktionierende SAMPLE.SYS Treiberdatei auf die Diskette, funktioniert sie einwandfrei. Viele Hersteller passten eine solche Diskette aber natürlich noch weiter an.

Speziell für die verrückten Sammler, die das tatsächlich interessiert: Ich hab den 32 Jahre alten Diskettensatz von Microsoft Excel 5.0 für Windows 3.1 nochmal komplett neu hochgeladen.

Es gibt jetzt viel schönere Disk Labels ohne Vergilbung und diesmal hab ich für euch alles gleich in 600dpi gescannt. Außerdem hatte sich auf das erste Disk Image der Vollversion auch noch ein kleiner Fehler eingeschlichen, welcher nun ebenfalls korrigiert wurde.
