Il y a des tas d’expositions nouvelles en ce moment, partout. Et tous les jours, il y en a d’autres qui s’ouvrent. Je ne sais pas où donner de la tête, ni des doigts.
Mais aujourd’hui, il faut que tout cela attende, que tout s’écarte. Un grand, un géant de l’art est mort hier, et comme tant d’autres, je ne peux m’empêcher d’y aller, moi aussi, de mon ode à David Hockney (1937-2026).

On connaît son histoire. Né à Bradford, dans le nord industriel de l’Angleterre, dans une famille ouvrière, David Hockney découvre très jeune son talent et très jeune aussi, il reçoit une formation au dessin. Plus tard, il descend à Londres, où il peut poursuivre ses études au prestigieux Royal College of Art. Le succès vient très vite. Ensuite, il s’envole pour New York, plus tard pour la Californie. C’est là que, ébloui par la lumière et les couleurs, il fait ses fameuses peintures de piscines (comme le célèbre « A Bigger Splash »). Et pendant des années durant, il fera plus ou moins la navette entre la lumineuse Californie, son Yorkshire natal et, plus tard, la Normandie, où il passera en tout cas le temps de la pandémie, et où il fait une de ses plus belles fresques, exposée à la Fondation Louis Vuitton en 2025.

J’ai écrit déjà plusieurs fois sur Hockney et certaines de ses expositions (au Van Gogh Museum, au musée Teylers, et à d’autres endroits encore). Et à chaque fois j’étais éblouie, soufflée, par ses couleurs, sa vitalité, et sa capacité de se réinventer à chaque fois. Hockney n’hésitait pas à explorer, puis à embrasser et à perfectionner de nouvelles techniques, la photo, l’i-pad, la vidéo, ou des combinaisons de tout cela, et à chaque fois, il nous coupait le souffle. Il fallait du courage, car au départ, le monde artistique n’appréciait pas forcément ces «mélanges» entre informatique et peinture. Mais Hockney n’avait pas froid aux yeux, et il l’a montré aussi en affirmant que les peintres d’antan se servaient d’instruments (d’optique, de mesure) pour établir la perspective. Sacrilège! Mais Hockney tenait bon, il en a fait la démonstration dans ses oeuvres à lui – et il avait probablement raison.

Son oeuvre reste, et c’est formidable. Qu’il s’agisse de paysages, de portraits, d’« instantanés » (comme la trace de la plongeon dans la piscine), de dessins au fusain, de peinture sur i-pad ou de vidéos, la virtuosité de Hockney est immense. Et son oeuvre nous reste. Alors, autant on est triste que ce grand artiste nous ait quittés, autant on peut se réjouir de pouvoir, encore et encore, admirer cette oeuvre.

Death of a giant

David Hockney (b. 1937) died on June 11, 2026.

There are many new exhibitions to write about, and I started doing just that. But today, everything has to wait. Today – like so many others – I have to commemorate David Hockney (1937-2026). He is one of the contemporary artists I admire most, and I am not the only one. I have written about several of his exhibitions (among others in the Van Gogh Museum, or in Teylers Museum).

Born in the industrial city of Bradford in a working class family, his talent was discovered when he was still very young, and he had drawing lessons from a very young age, too. Later, he went to London where he was admitted to the Royal College of Art. There, his talent was noticed as well, not only by his teachers and other students, but also by galleries and art merchants. Success came pretty soon. Hockney certainly was not one of those artists whose recognition comes only after their death, or late in life. Right away, his work sold well – which permitted him to travel and to live comfortable. He went to New York, then to California, where he was as smitten by the light and colours as Van Gogh was in Provence. It was in California that he made his famous swimming pool paintings, among which ‘‘A Bigger Splash’’.

Yet Hockney didn’t forget the Yorkshire of his youth, and he returned there regularly, even for longer periods. There he made – among many other works – his famous ‘‘Spring’’ series, and it was also there he started working with new techniques. I remember his earliest i-pad ‘‘paintings’’, one of which represented rain – like a video, except that it wasn’t a video. Hockney was probably the first painter to embrace those new techniques – and to incorporate them in his paintings. He was quite brave in that respect, for in the beginning his use of the i-pad was frowned upon in certain circles. ‘‘Painting’’ with an instrument like that wasn’t serious! In the same way, Hockney proclaimed that painters in earlier centuries used instruments to establish the perspective in their pictures. Sacrilege! It couldn’t be… But he was probably right – and he showed it in his own work.

It was also on his i-pad – perfected by himself – that he made his ‘‘Normandy’’ series. He stayed in his house in Normandy during the pandemic, and each and every day he painted the landscape, that changed with the weather and the seasons – like the landscape he portrayed in Yorkshire. A combination of hundreds of these small pictures and a gigantic ‘‘fresco’’ was shown (among other places) in 2025 in the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Few artists are or were so inventive and prolific as Hockney. He probably was creative and busy till his last moments. In a way, his death makes us orphans. But fortunately, there is his work, which we can see and admire time and time again. In that sense, artists are never really gone.

After four years of studio silence, Kenoshan cavemen Jungle Rot emerge from the bush with twelfth platter, Cruel Face of War. For the uninitiated, Jungle Rot plays groovy death metal that’s hostile, bludgeoning, and never dares to overthink anything. Their output has been more reliable than our coverage, and reviewing every other album since 2011’s Kill on Command, each has earned a ‘Mixed’ rating. Interestingly, the two albums we missed reviewing, Terror Regime and Jungle Rot, are the best of that group, particularly their self-titled effort. Now faced with our first consecutive Jungle Rot evaluation, can Cruel Face of War break the mold, or does it run through the Jungle on cruise control?

‘Consistency is key’ perseveres as a pillar of advice I mete out and live by,1 and this lesson sticks with Jungle Rot like flies on a decomposing carcass. After three decades of mouth-breathing death jams, the band still delivers freshly forged OSDM every two to four years that reeks of Obituary and Bolt Thrower. While the hardcore and deathcore vestiges have diminished,2 trace amounts of Hatebreed and Slaughter to Prevail lurk within Jungle Rot’s fetid funk, especially Dave Matrise’s vocals. To be fair, any fluctuations in their sound become conversations of degrees, and since Fueled by Hate dropped in 2004, Jungle Rot has been lodged in a groove so deep they haven’t pulled out from it yet.

Jungle Rot sounds best when they inject a bit of melody into their formula, and those crumbs unerringly serve as the best morsels on Cruel Face of War. Maybe that’s because only those moments break up the monotony of an otherwise wearisome chuggathon, where an unvarying landscape of riffs and grooves blur together into an indistinct sea of homogenous death metal. For instance, the riffs on “When the Elders Rise” and “Rot Riffs” carry just enough character to help differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack, but otherwise, I can’t distinguish between most others without playing them back-to-back. To Jungle Rot’s credit, they possess a sound uniquely their own. But like a painter who only uses a single color, they lock themselves into a self-imposed prison of uniformity that undercuts any notion of tension or contrast.

Despite the detractors, Jungle Rot’s adherence to convention pays dividends as well. Pit-ready grooves and stank-inducing verses make great fodder for good ol’ fashioned head-banging, and while the simplicity limits Cruel Face of War’s upside, it also ensures a stable foundation to build upon. Regarding pacing, Jungle Rot plays with two speeds: a menacing, mid-paced skulk and a faster, more predatory trot. Though they never commit to woebegone plods or balls-out blitzes, there’s just enough variety to keep things engaging without moving too far away from Jungle Rot’s established sonic ideal. Additionally, Cruel Face of War merits praise for the efficient yet expressive solos, particularly on “Cruel Face of War” and “Horrors Vile,” with Geoff Bub and David Matrise credited for guitars.3 Bassist James Genenz rumbles and groans alongside, supplying a meaty dimension to Cruel Face of War, and drummer Spenser Syphers pounds and pummels as needed. Dan “The Man” Swanö even handles mixing and mastering, granting the immediate boost he bestows to nearly everything he touches.

Cruel Face of War never outright errs, yet Jungle Rot proves so reticent to stray from the path oft-traveled that I wonder why they recorded new material. Jungle Rot felt like a promising step forward, infusing wicked melodies into the band’s brutish brand of death metal. Since then, Jungle Rot seems content to churn out mildly different flavors of the same core recipe with rapidly diminishing returns. After thirty years of staying the course, I’m not hopeful that Jungle Rot will venture into unfamiliar territory, but without stepping outside their comfort zone, I don’t foresee them bursting free from their Jungle Rut.

Clairvoyance – Chasm of Immurement Review

Yes, I picked this up entirely because of its cover. Girardi’s gorgeous spiral of tombstones and skeletons conjures vintage highbrow death metal of the likes of Death. The title Chasm of Immurement grasps at brutal badassery in the vein of Suffocation’s Effigy of the Forgotten. Clairvoyance’s logo remains indecipherable even if you know the band’s name, suggesting kvltness galore. The promo materials describe lyrics that address the isolating effects of depression, foreshadowing a harrowing listen. In isolation, each of these judgments strikes at the truth but glances off. Chasm of Immurement is the debut album from Poland’s Clairvoyance, an unknown band comprising unknown musicians. Lying at the intersection of brainless death-doom and brainiac digressions, Chasm of Immurement is a powerful foray into death metal.

A first pass through Chasm of Immurement suggests primitive death metal with a dollop of doom. “Eternal Blaze” opens the album with a bang that recalls Faceless Burial’s Speciation. After grabbing me by the anus, Clairvoyance maintains its hold by alternating between mid-range Obituary riffs and lurching Autopsy-style death-doom. These lowbrow highlights feel both as slimy and evolved as an amoeba. With both its riffs and its guitar tone, Chasm of Immurement leaves a palpable layer of grime that justifies multiple colonoscopies. “Blood Divine” emerges as a late gem through riffs that are gory enough to draw blood and enormous enough to evoke Immolation. This isn’t isolated to a subset of the tracks; throughout its runtime, Chasm of Immurement alternates between a sixteen-wheeler and a used minivan without dulling its fun.

On your fifth listen, Clairvoyance’s experimental bent comes into view. The same doomy riffs you’d heard before reveal spooky foreground melodies (“Reign of Silence”). The same track that you’d interpreted as a caveman ditty blossoms in baffling melodic directions in its second half (“Eternal Blaze”). The same song that introduced itself as by-the-books death metal culminates in a monstrous doomy climax (“Fleshmachine”). The same sections that you’d dismissed as repetitive transform into home bases for grimy excursions, interfering with your sleep schedule and your family obligations. Adorning hefty riffs with sinister melodies, Clairvoyance recalls both Lovecraft’s Azathoth and Morbid Angel’s Trey Azagthoth. It took me a while to realize that I was doing Chasm of Immurement an injustice by pigeonholing it into old-school death metal. It is indeed that, but it’s so much more.

Clairvoyance’s varying ambitions both empower and dilute each other. Spanning 34 minutes across 6 tracks, Chasm of Immurement is a concise collection of lengthy tracks. Some of its pieces wander, especially at their simplest. For instance, despite being the second shortest track, “Blood Divine” feels lengthy because of its dearth of creative ideas. Similarly, the shortest song, “Eternal Blaze,” suffers from riffwork that’s decent but unimaginative, before eventually redeeming itself with more variety. Even so, these flubs are rare. The six-minute “Hymn of the Befouled” is the starkest counterexample, balancing length with girth by combining a vicious off-kilter main riff with melodic escapades that hold me rapt. Parts of Chasm of Immurement could do a better job of remaining engaging, but it’s hardly a fatal flaw.

Balancing thoughtful death metal and anti-intellectual death-doom, Clairvoyance’s debut is as weird as it is powerful. Neanderthals who need their fix should look here, as Chasm of Immurement’s crushing death metal riffs rival the best of old-school death metal. Conversely, fans of Morbid Angel’s wonkiness or Tomb Mold’s shapeshifting shenanigans will find just as much to love here. Chasm of Immurement is unlikely to dethrone Faithxtractor’s Loathing and the Noose atop my 2025 death metal ranking, as its occasional meandering loses my interest. But it’s a promising debut from a crew of talented Polish fiends.
