  12. Needles Flying . . .

    5 October 2026

I’m finding it hard to believe that it’s October.

I’m making progress with PT – we are working a lot now on building strength in my quad muscle. It still doesn’t always fire reliably, but I am walking more and more without my cane. My physical therapist said that the first time I tried to walk to the first set of benches at the pond, I needed to have someone go with me. She doesn’t want me walking longer distances with my cane – said it could alter my gait.

So, my stepson was here in town on Thursday and Friday, and he came out on the train from the city and we had a wonderful day on Thursday! And I got him to walk with me to the first set of benches!!

I can really see how much this summer of recovery has aged me, but I don’t really care. :-)

Being outside in nature has always been a big part of my mental health and since my left knee tore and I had to stop my walks a couple three years ago, it’s been challenging. It was a gorgeous day here yesterday, and I’d complied with my PT’s directions that I not do it alone the first time, so off I went to the first set of benches – on my own! I stopped at my usual spot both coming and going to take a break. I was slow. And careful (no falling or tripping allowed). But I did it!!! You can see in this photo why I love to walk here.

I sat for quite some time at the first set of benches, just enjoying being outside.

This was huge progress for me, you guys. It was about 2,800 steps there and back, and I did it without my cane. I can hardly wait to share this with my PT today at therapy!! And you can see how happy I was to have gotten to the benches :-)

We ran errands on Thursday, and I overdid it a bit, so he decided to make dinner for us. I threw the potatoes in the oven and then roasted the asparagus with Parmesan. He did the steaks and they were not only gigantic (I had leftovers) they were absolutely delish!

I was going to attempt the train into the city on Friday, but since the day would include a lot of walking, I drove into the city and met my stepson at the Art Institute. We had another amazing day. And although I had my cane, the first thing I had to do when we got inside, was sit down. So he went to Member Services and got me a wheelchair. I didn’t really want to use it, but I knew it was going to be the best thing for both of us. So, I got into it and he wheeled me all around. We saw the Lee Miller Fearless exhibition. I am a huge fan of hers – she was so ahead of her time. I’m a fan of all the Surrealists, actually. We saw some of the Impressionists, the Armor Collection, and the Thorne Rooms. We had lunch in the Member Bar, and then did some shopping in the Museum Store before he walked me back to my car and then we went our separate ways. I look short in this photo. I’m not. My stepson is 6’3″. :-D

I did not go to the show he’s on tour with this time. I decided that I just wasn’t mobile enough and could be a real distraction side-stage with him. He invited me for Christmas (Florida), and if we can work it all out, I will go.

I’ve been knitting Sophie Scarves by the truckload :-D They are simple, and pretty, and I’m using up some skeins of yarn!!

I’ve been experimenting with using Lycra with some mainly acrylic yarn on my sock machine to make some fingerless mitts. When the Lycra is activated, it draws in and I wondered if it would draw the acrylic in like it does with wool. It does, but not nearly as much. These were too big for me, but they fit my stepson perfectly, and they are 80% acrylic, so he doesn’t have to worry about them. I’m going to make him a blue pair, and then I’ll make him one in black, but it will be wool so he will have to be a little more careful with them. He also loved the size 13 socks I had cranked, so I’m going to crank him a few more pairs. They are good for him when he’s on the road in cooler climates.

That’s the update from The Third Coast today :-)

You know I love The Whispers. Here are the two who are left, with Babyface in the Cadillac Chronicles. :-)

  13. Good Morning!

Good Monday morning, my dear friends! That is, if there is such a thing. Anyway, I wanted to stop by and say the author fair I was in went very well. I sat next to a very nice lady, a retired science teacher, who now writes science books for children to spark their interest in science and chemistry. It was perfect match since she was nice enough to help me promote my book. I sold three copies. One of the people who stopped by was an author who writes books about survivors, and when I told her my story, her face lit up like a Christmas tree, and said she would be interested in interviewing me! Of course, I jummped at the chance and we exchanged contact information. I was both flattered and inspired, as this is a win-win situation, one which would benefit everybody. Once again, something good coming out of the bad, and there has been a lot of bad lately.

I mentioned in a previous post how one big home repair after another was building up, and I had no idea how I was going to survive it all. I couldn’t afford to fix one big problem much less all of them. One repair would have cleaned me out financially. I made many calls, all to no avail. I put my name on waiting lists which were two years or more, but it was something. Plus I was dealing with some painful, personal issues as well, and I was at the end of my rope physically. The pain and exhaustion were relentless, and I began asking myself, if life is this hard and so painful, why am I here? What was the point of my life? I can’t do much, and all I ever do is ask for help because I can’t survive on my own, and it was killing me. I didn’t want to be here; I didn’t think it was worth it, and I just wanted all to end. The pain, the frustration, the extreme stress, the sadness, the anger, all of it.

Then, when I awoke one morning, I felt this calm feeling washing over me like a waterfall. Then, this small, soft voice said to me, “Relax, my child. You are loved and you will be fine. Don’t give up.” That was the day two angels in the form of friends reached out to me. I was relieved. God heard all my praying and wailing, and once again, He sent me peace and comfort as only He can.

You see? There is so much good which can come out of the bad if you hang in there and have faith. Even in all my anger and dispair, I must have believed, because you can’t be angry at something in which you don’t believe. He will send you what you need and who you need. The help will come at the right time and from the right people. Good people do exist. Had I not hung in there, I wouldn’t have been at the author fair, and I would have never met this lady who wants to interview me and share my story in her book. This will bring so many blessings I never even considered.

So please, my friends, never give up faith and never give up hope! There could be so many blessings hidden inside of what is going on right now, and as survivors, we can be the vessels of these blessings. We all have a purpose in this life. It’s a puzzle, and we all fit somehow.

    Have a wonderful day, everybody!
    Love and hugs,
    Beckie.

This came about a month ago. Life was so hard in just about every way possible. I was sinking like the Titanic. I was desperate. One big thing after another was piling up, and I knew I would never have enough money to fix it all, much less some of it. Even one repair would have cleaned me out financially. I was dealing with so many other personal issues, plus I was at a low physically. Low; hell, I was at the bottom of the barrel. It really couldn’t not have been much worse. For several days, I was dispondent; I was, “there.” If life was really this hard and painful, was it even worth it? I didn’t want to be here, and I almost wasn’t. But, once again, God spared me; I felt His presence, and a wave of calm washed over me, and this soft, still voice said to me, “You will be fine. Be still. Be calm. It will work out.”

This was the voice of God. It had to be. That was when I received that blessing, which brings me to my point. Just when you think you can’t get any lower, and just when you think it can’t get any worse, that’s when wonderful things happen, and that’s when wonderful people step up to the plate. Yes, these are also the times when your, “friends” desert you and forsake you. That happened to me as well. One who would always refer to herself and her family as, “good Christians.” no longer wanted anything to do with me. But, those people do not belong in your life. No matter what they might say, they are not people of God, and if we don’t remove them from our lives, chances are God will. They will be replaced by friends you deserve.

In spite of where I have been, there has been a lot of good which has come out of the bad. At the end, you will be taken care of by God and by the people He brings into our lives, and believe it or not, by the people He removes from our lives. They become blessings when they leave our lives.

  14. Hello, It’s Been A While!

Hello, my friends near and far!
Sorry I have been scarce, but quite suddenly, God has brought many angels into my life. Finally, my property issues are being fixed and things are coming to a long awaited finish. My garage which hasneeded wood replaced, sand blasting and painting will be getting done next month, thanks to a high school friend and her husband. Several other angels stepped up to the plate to care for me as well, and it has all happened at once. I have been overwhelmed, but in a good way. Now, I can get all my ducks in a row and plan when to do what, and I must say, it is a wonderful feeling! I haven’t been this peaceful in many years!

As a result, I have been feeling considerably better. Not great of course, since less stress still doesn’t cure CFS, but it does help. I have been much more relaxed which helps me rest better. Even at rest, I would still notice a tense feeling inside; my heart was not as calm as it should have been. Now, my muscles are not quite as achy, so things are better. I have been working on myself as well; I went to a complimentary Elgin Womans’ Club meeting to see if I wanted to become a member, and I have decided to do so. I have decided I need to do something to get outside myself; doing for others has always helped me through this terrible disease, and I have needed a focus for a very long time. Life was about money or lack of it; life was about my house and how I was going to manage repairs. I was constantly thinking about it or making phone call after phone call, trying to find assistance of some kind and feeling frustration at never being able to find it. Life was always one step forward, two steps back, and it was more stressful than you could imagine. It was constant wear on my mind and therefore constant wear on my body. Now, that is all taken care of and I can focus on doing for myself and others for a change. Elgin is my hometown, and it has given me a lot, such as an education, both high school and college, my first job, a good place to live and a nice home. Now, I want to give someething back to my community.

It also has a beautiful library called the Gail Borden Public Library, which brings me to a friendly reminder; I will be attending the Annual Author Fair there on October 4th, from 2-4 P.M. If you are in the Elgin, Illinois area, please come out and see me! There will be over fifty local authors there, signing and selling their books. Genres are from soup to nuts, including spiritual, historic mysteries, sciencee fiction, and autobiographical. That’s me.

You can see a list of authors on the link below:
    gailborden.info/authors

So, this is what I have to say today. I will return to my research when I get all my ducks in a row about my home. It should be soon.

Well, until next time, my friends. Please stay well!

    Beckie

  16. And Even MORE Good News . . . !!!

    1 September 2026

You guys, how is it September? This really was a lost summer for me, but yesterday I saw my surgeon for my second post-manipulation follow-up appointment. And you guys, the news was good!!!

He is such a kind and patient man. He answers all my questions without fail and has been encouraging me from the very beginning of this journey. I did have the difficult task yesterday of talking to him about my experience with his PA, which was not good. I understand that personalities don’t always mesh, but she was always negative with me and never encouraging, but more importantly that she made some mistakes regarding drugs with me, a couple of which that – if I was not such a strong advocate for myself – could have been dangerous for me. I made it clear that I was not attempting to get her in trouble, but that these things were not OK and that I did not want to see her again – that I was not confident in her.

He was so kind and listened to everything I had to share, and assured me that he would speak to her about all of it. And he told me that for all further appointments I could see him, which brings me to the more good news :-)

He was thrilled that my physical therapist got my knee to 121 degrees! And I had it wrong – passively is when SHE manipulates my knee – actively is when I do it myself. So I’m at 118 degrees actively, and 121 passively!!!! I hit the magic 120 degrees and surpassed it!!! He said that unless I feel I need to see him, or if something goes pear-shaped (which it won’t), I don’t have to come back for another appointment until my annual check in June!!! Yay!!!

I have at least another month of PT (and, I’m guessing, it will go well into October) as we are now working on getting my quad to fire consistently, and for it, and me, to get stronger. He feels that I will continue to gain range of motion in the coming months, and, he said that the stiffness will eventually go away but that it will take time. Of course, it seems like every appointment I’ve had there it has been raining. Yesterday was no different. It’s been raining off and on for a couple of days here again, and my knee is way more stiff when the barometer drops. But he understood that and it was just a really good appointment. The best one I’ve had. He concurred with both my PTs that it would at least three months out from the manipulation before I could be safe from developing more scar tissue. To that end, I have my appointment to pick up my at-home sleep study kit on the 14th to make sure my new dental device is working properly, and I made my appointment with my new GI doc who will, eventually, do the colonoscopy that I couldn’t have at the end of June.

He said I’m doing everything right and to keep going. I think I’m going to be doing heel slides forever :-D but I’m SO encouraged, you guys, and both my PTs were so happy that I saw him instead of the PA this time – and that I won’t have to see the PA again.

Tomorrow is three months post-op and I can start to take care of some medical and dental appointments that had to wait this long. I have one remaining scab, down at the bottom of my scar. This is actually the second scar in this spot. An internal stitch has already pushed out of this hole, but there’s another one coming. I could see it and the hole after the first scab fell off. This second stitch has just reached the surface, so, once again, I just have to be patient for it to work its way out.

In other news of the day, the two cones of Opal sock yarn I ordered arrived. And somehow 1,000 grams of sock yarn did not translate in my math-challenged brain to TEN SKEINS of sock yarn. Well, make that TWENTY SKEINS of sock yarn because I got two cones . . . so much for knitting down my stash this year. Here’s one of them.

And here’s what my Cold Sheep chart looks like for this year.

If I can get back below my starting number in January, I will be a happy girl. I’m thinking strongly about participating in the fall craft fair again next year. I still have some things left from last year, and I’d like to make some new things. I’m also wondering if I might be able to sell some things in a local shop. There are a couple of places where that might be possible. I will look into it. The more I crank, the more yarn I can divest. I’d also like to get my spinning wheel going this fall and spin up some of my own yarn. And now that I’m physically smaller, I think some of the sweater quantities of yarn in the china hutch might get put into play. I never really wanted to knit sweaters for myself when I was larger. But I think I would like to wear some that have been in the cedar chest for awhile and I’d like to knit some more for myself. Big plans . . . we’ll see how things go ;-D

Trying to find a tune for today and I slipped back to something mellow from Stevie Nicks’ Trouble in Shangri-La album. I hope you will enjoy this one.

  20. Does Red Light Therapy Really Improve Your Skin?

Red light therapy has become a popular wellness and skincare trend, appearing in dermatology offices, spas and a growing selection of at-home masks and panels. But while the treatment may offer real benefits, a Columbia University dermatologist says consumers should expect gradual, modest changes—not dramatic overnight results.

A recent ColumbiaDoctors article explains how the therapy works, what it may improve and what consumers should consider before purchasing an at-home device.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy exposes the skin to specific wavelengths of visible red light. Cells absorb that light through their mitochondria, helping them generate energy that may support collagen production, tissue repair and reduced inflammation.

Unlike ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds, red light does not expose the skin to damaging UV radiation or produce significant heat.

    What Skin Concerns May Improve?

According to Columbia dermatologist Dr. Victoria Perez, scientific evidence suggests that consistent red light therapy may produce small improvements in:

    • Fine lines
    • Skin texture
    • Redness
    • Acne
    • Scarring
    • Certain forms of hair loss

Results are generally subtle. Treatments may be needed several times per week for several months before noticeable changes appear.

Dr. Perez recommends viewing red light therapy as a supplement to other skincare or hair-loss treatments rather than a replacement for established medical care.

    Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

Red light therapy is generally considered safe when used properly, although some people may experience temporary redness.

People with melasma should be cautious because concentrated visible light could worsen hyperpigmentation. Eye protection is also important because prolonged exposure may damage the retina.

Anyone with an existing skin condition, eye disorder or sensitivity to light should speak with a qualified medical professional before beginning treatment.

What Should You Look for in an At-Home Device?

Professional devices used in dermatology offices are typically more powerful than consumer products. The article notes that at-home devices vary considerably in strength, quality and intended purpose.

Consumers should look for products with laboratory safety certifications and wavelengths between 600 and 720 nanometers. Because different skin and hair concerns may respond to different wavelengths, shoppers should choose a device designed for their specific treatment goals.

Is Red Light Therapy Worth Trying?

Red light therapy appears to be a legitimate supplemental treatment, but realistic expectations are essential. It may deliver modest improvements when used consistently, but it is unlikely to transform the skin quickly or replace professional dermatological care.

A dermatologist can help determine whether red light therapy is appropriate and recommend a safe, effective treatment approach.

This article is for informational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

  24. When Did We Make Love So Complicated?

A short video on social media made me stop and ask a much bigger question: When did we become so afraid to let people know they matter? Living with a lifelong health condition, spending years in hospitals, and losing people I loved far too young has taught me that tomorrow isn't guaranteed. It has also taught me that kindness, appreciation and genuine connection are never things we regret. This is a reflection on vulnerability, authenticity and why I still believe in saying what you mean... and meaning what you say.
