XX wieku ideałem była krągła Marilyn Monroe (choć warto dodać, że jej wymiary 91-61-91 cm nadal były daleko od przeciętnych). Lata 60. przyniosły rewolucję w postaci wychudzonej Twiggy, która ważyła około 41 kg przy wzroście 169 cm. Następnie lata 80. i 90. wprowadziły era „heroin chic" z Kate Moss, promując ekstremalną szczupłość jako symbol sukcesu i samokontroli. Co fascynujące, w tym okresie szczupłość stała się niemal wymogiem akceptacji społecznej, a media sugerowały, że jest ona niezbędna do osobistego szczęścia. Po krótkim okresie celebrowania krągłości w latach 2000. i ruchu body positivity w latach 2010., rok 2025 przyniósł pełny powrót do ideałów szczupłości. Specjaliści zwracają uwagę, że żaden z tych ideałów nigdy nie reprezentował przeciętnego ciała kobiety, a każda zmiana trendu była wynikiem nie biologicznych przemian, lecz przemysłu mody, reklamy i kulturowych konstrukcji piękna. Najbardziej niepokojące jest to, że każda dekada przynosiła jeszcze bardziej restrykcyjne standardy, a technologia retuszu cyfrowego w XXI wieku sprawiła, że współczesne ideały są często fizjologicznie niemożliwe do osiągnięcia bez ingerencji medycznej lub cyfrowej obróbki.
