The Flash Hall at Prastuttle Gheyott
Today marks the official arrival of Autumn. We tried to make a post for the Autumnal Equinox but this post is the story that came without badgering the magic into the shape of the day. Today's entry is not an equinox thing, we already suffered that defeat in our previous post. This story is simply a tale that required to be told. It is not the Great Hall at Prastuttle Gheyott Manor that is famous. The great hall occupies a large space, the size of a sixteen-lane bowling alley perhaps, with a ceiling that is almost three stories tall. Two marble fireplaces sit opposite each other, carpets from Immel Bay and Tyresht cover the floor, tapestries from Ortazdu and Yulan hang on the walls. A Persepolitan column stands in an awkward alcove, and the requisite minimum of gold leaf decorates all suitable surfaces. But visitors to the castle do not come in droves to walk through the admirable Northern Renaissance Revival portico for a tour of the manor's Great Hall. The woman wearing a Genroku-style kimono and her hair in a chignon seem about to strike the drum. In the background is a Rimpa-style folding screen with a design of fringed pinks and flowing water. This painting was commissioned by Takahashi Yoshio, who was involved in the management of Mitsukoshi Drapery Store and had touched off the Genroku motif boom. The subject is his wife, Chiyoko. This familiar painting was used in a poster for the Mitsukoshi’s Spring New Pattern Show and later as a postage stamp.”
