By Robert Henri (1865-1929), Blind Spanish Singer, 1912, oil on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum. Quote from the artist: “The object isn't to make art, it's to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable.” #art #arthistory #painting #oilpainting
From the museum: “ Robert Henri and his wife, Linda, made their first trip to Spain in 1900. They spent six weeks in Madrid, where Henri lingered at the Prado copying paintings by Velázquez. He traveled to Spain several times over the next few years, painting people from all walks of life with the directness that he had learned as a newspaper illustrator. Among his subjects were two blind street singers, who played their guitars in his studio for hours. (Boone, España!: American Artists and the Spanish Experience, 1998)”

I've finished: Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gabriel Kay
This is my first encounter with Guy Gabriel Kay. I can understand why he is so beloved by his fans.
I really enjoyed his writing and his complex and competent characters. He writes so well, he managed to make me enjoy Byzantine court intrigue, not an easy task.
I really loved the historical perspective, and the central part the art of mosaic laying holds within the novel.
I studied history and art history and really connected with these themes as well as the characters.
If you are looking for a fantasy novel, you may be disappointed, as the magical elements only play a small part. though they do eventually represent an important aspect of the overall theme.
This is mainly alt history.

'Jacob & his Angels'
"the huge figures shocked many of Epstein’s contemporaries just as his first commission for the façade of the BMA Building had shocked Edwardian sensibilities in 1908"
