  1. This article on Sheldrake’s Substack acknowledges the theory’s limitation in explaining the origins of #form, but the form of compassionate thought already exists and I am not interested in understanding how form came to exist, just that we can influence our #mental #formations (sankhara) to be more wholesome and thereby influence the #collective #unconscious toward more-spontaneous compassion through morphic fields. 2/n 🧵

  2. 🧠✨ Unconscious experiences – How the #brain processes information

This short film from our #Zoomposium with #GodehardBrüntrup highlights how #unconscious experiences, #attention, and expectation structures interact – and what this reveals about how our brain works and our self-image.

  3. “I was repeatedly denied #medical care, #disability accommodations, & access to a #mobility aid when I asked for my cane. Eventually, I insisted that they look for a wheelchair. When they found one & I was placed in it, I was told that my legs must work if I had been driving,” #AliyaRahman recalled. No one asked for her #ID or proof of #citizenship after she was #detained, #AliyaRahman said, nor was her face scanned.

Rahman eventually fell #unconscious, & so does not know what happened next.

  4. A quotation from Douglas Adams

It was his subconscious which told him this — that infuriating part of a person’s brain which never responds to interrogation, merely gives little meaningful nudges and then sits humming quietly to itself, saying nothing.

Douglas Adams (1952-2001) English author, humourist, screenwriter
Dirk Gently, No. 2, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, ch. 17 (1988)

  9. A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

All greatness is unconscious, or it is little and naught.

  10. Previously I posted here about my soft spot for Glen Campbell’s Wichita Lineman. On further reflection it occurred to me that one of the reasons it resonates so strongly with me as an adult (having first fallen for it as a young child) is it embodies a romance of the (American) open road.

In my youth I was lucky enough to fulfil my adolescent dream of driving across North America (east to west) and travel back (west to east) via Greyhound.

Looking back on those memories I can barely detect the boundaries delineating the reality of it from the dream of it. Such is the unreliability of the mind when it comes to certainty about anything. Perhaps it is in this liminal zone, prone to suggestion, that our unconscious emerges unbidden presenting us with desires and aversions of which we were previously unaware or had forgotten.

Wasn’t it Jung (of course) who once said:

    What you resist persists.

  15. Not to sound like a #curmudgeon (a #malcontent if you will) but why don't #parents prevent their #spawn from making noise with utensils when in a public restaurant? How is the partially formed #homosapien to imprint what is rude, #entitled and/or #unconscious behaviour?

  16. #Onboarding's been net positive, but a required 3rd party educational #video reminded me why we wrote that, "Scholars in the field cringe whenever we experience another mandated training suggesting that #implicitBias is entirely #unconscious, a stable trait in each of us that we can measure with a test..., or the primary cause of #prejudice in the #workplace."

You know that science fiction trope about dangerous forbidden zones that warp reality? I think they're symbolic. There's a reason why themes become tropes. Must be something on our minds...

  18. Unless I see evidence that someone else already introduced it in similar terms, I will claim here that I’ve come up with (yet another😀) theory of consciousness I will aptly name a “Kihbernetic Theory of #Consciousness” or “#KTC”.

According to this theory #regulation in a dynamical system is always #unconscious (innate or learned, like driving a bike), #guidance is always #conscious (i.e. it assumes there is #intention, teleology, conscious seeking for answers), and #control can be either conscious or unconscious.

For example, one can be focused on (have conscious control over) a conversation while unconsciously controlling a vehicle they are driving, and then momentarily switch their #attention to some unexpected situation on the road that the regulators were unable to resolve by themselves.

  19. When I #Speak #Boldly about my #Experiences of things the #Narrative of #Discourse in #Society refuses to hold #Space for it's not because I want #Attention or expect people to #Listen or #Hear - #God knows it would be #Scary if more people did pay attention - It's a way to keep from choking to #Death on the #Strangulation from the #Oppression that #Society is #Blindly under and #Unconscious of.

People with actual #Vision need to #Stop #Living under the #Spell of other peoples #Unconsciousness

  20. @Remittancegirl #Freud's essay, "The Uncanny" considers a similar question - what is the cause of that shivery, numinous feeling one might call 'uncanny'? He suggests that the feeling has roots in a certain kind of *familiarity* -- that the moment (or image, or story) in question jangles the bells of something we have repressed -- something, perhaps, that lies unquiet in the #psyche.
