  1. A quotation from Gloria Steinem

The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn. We are filled with the popular wisdom of several centuries just past, and we are terrified to give it up. Patriotism means obedience, age means wisdom, woman means submission, black means inferior: these are preconceptions embedded so deeply in our thinking that we honestly may not know that they are there.

Gloria Steinem (1934–2026) American feminist, journalist, activist
Essay (1971-08-21), “A New Egalitarian Life Style,” New York Times

  5. A quotation from Einstein

Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions.

[Wenige sind imstande, von den Vorurteilen der Umgebung abweichende Meinungen gelassen auszusprechen; die Meisten sind sogar unfähig, überhaupt zu solchen Meinungen zu gelangen.]

    Albert Einstein (1879-1955) German-American physicist
Essay (1953-05-23), “Aphorisms for Leo Baeck [Neun Aphorismen], No. 4, Essays Presented to Leo Baeck on the Occasion of His Eightieth Birthday (1954) [Einstein Archives 28-962]

  6. A quotation from Eric Hoffer

The truth seems to be that propaganda on its own cannot force its way into unwilling minds; neither can it inculcate something wholly new; nor can it keep people persuaded once they have ceased to believe. It penetrates only into minds already open, and rather than instill opinion it articulates and justifies opinions already present in the minds of its recipients. The gifted propagandist brings to a boil ideas and passions already simmering in the minds of his hearers. he echoes their innermost feelings. Where opinion is not coerced, people can be made to believe only in what they already “know.”

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, Part 3, ch. 14, § 83 (3.14.83) (1951)

  7. A quotation from Robert Heinlein

Could it be otherwise here? Could any one sect obtain a working majority at the polls and take over the country? Perhaps not — but a combination of a dynamic evangelist, television, enough money, and modern techniques of advertising and propaganda might make Billy Sunday’s efforts look like a corner store compared to Sears Roebuck. Throw in a depression for good measure, promise a material heaven here on earth, add a dash of anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, anti-Negroism, and a good large dose of anti-“furriners” in general and anti-intellectuals here at home and the result might be something quite frightening — particularly when one recalls that our voting system is such that a minority distributed as pluralities in enough states can constitute a working majority in Washington.

Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988) American writer
Essay (1952-10), “Concerning Stories Never Written,” Revolt in 2100, Postscript (1953)

  8. A quotation from Adlai Stevenson

The anatomy of patriotism is complex. But surely intolerance and public irresponsibility cannot be cloaked in the shining armor of rectitude and righteousness. Nor can the denial of the right to hold ideas that are different — the freedom of man to think as he pleases. To strike freedom of the mind with the fist of patriotism is an old and ugly subtlety.

Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965) American diplomat, statesman
Speech (1952-08-27), “The Nature of Patriotism,” American Legion Convention, Madison Square Garden, New York City

  9. A quotation from Jonathan Swift

Reasoning will never make a Man correct an ill Opinion, which by Reasoning he never acquired.

  10. If you have any Meta app on your phone, such as Facebook, it is time for a rethink.

Meta is secretly using its AI to scan phone camera rolls of users.

    Consider this:
Pre-WWII Nazis would have done similar if the technologies had existed back then, first to profile people under pretences, then to target people for camps etc. It would start with minorities and progress fast to anyone who 'seemed different', 'walked different', owned something they wanted, or disagreed in any way.

Furthermore, why the hell do operating systems leave backdoors open for any toxic, divisive app?

It is not the time in world politics to be coasting on habit and hopes about any app known to have dined with far right.

  11. Listen, hear me out, okay...?

The #protagonist, #antagonist relationship is foundational to #fascism - and is totally the discovery of fire regarding #psyops.

#Dehumanization is not only a weapon against people, but also a harbinger of ignorance, pretence and #prejudice.

As such, scapegoating is a powerful tool for any #politician to escape the people's ire, or to justify the invasion of foreign lands.

As #writers I think we've leaned on this crutch for way too long.

  12. My bf wanted to watch a shitty dating show, so I suggested Dating Naked. He's now watching it.

While the contestants were traipsing naked through the jungle, I reflected upon what it must have been like to be the first naked ape. (Naked ape here = "ape without the thick body hair of other apes.")

I know I'm fantasizing, but it seems to me that if the other apes had the ability to think about that new naked ape, they would have estimated its mutation to be deleterious. I mean... seriously, who had ever heard of an ape without hair all over its body.
