  1. A quotation from Gloria Steinem

The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn. We are filled with the popular wisdom of several centuries just past, and we are terrified to give it up. Patriotism means obedience, age means wisdom, woman means submission, black means inferior: these are preconceptions embedded so deeply in our thinking that we honestly may not know that they are there.

Gloria Steinem (1934–2026) American feminist, journalist, activist
Essay (1971-08-21), “A New Egalitarian Life Style,” New York Times

  2. Laws are often designed to enforce a certain way of life. For example, people can physically live in boats, RVs/caravans, tents, under trees, etc. But, in the US, one usually can't get a government ID, a bank account, a job, insurance, etc without a residential address.

  3. A quotation from Lincoln

Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation we began by declaring that “all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except negroes.” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read “all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics.” When it comes to this, I shall prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty — to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
    Letter (1854-08-24) to Joshua Speed

  7. A quotation from Eric Hoffer

The truth seems to be that propaganda on its own cannot force its way into unwilling minds; neither can it inculcate something wholly new; nor can it keep people persuaded once they have ceased to believe. It penetrates only into minds already open, and rather than instill opinion it articulates and justifies opinions already present in the minds of its recipients. The gifted propagandist brings to a boil ideas and passions already simmering in the minds of his hearers. he echoes their innermost feelings. Where opinion is not coerced, people can be made to believe only in what they already “know.”

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, Part 3, ch. 14, § 83 (3.14.83) (1951)

  8. A quotation from Orwell

I think one must engage in politics — using the word in a wide sense — and that one must have preferences: that is, one must recognise that some causes are objectively better than others, even if they are advanced by equally bad means. As for the nationalistic loves and hatreds that I have spoken of, they are part of the make-up of most of us, whether we like it or not. Whether it is possible to get rid of them I do not know, but I do believe that it is possible to struggle against them, and that this is essentially a moral effort. It is a question first of all of discovering what one really is, what one’s own feelings really are, and then of making allowance for the inevitable bias.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1945-05), “Notes on Nationalism,” Polemic Magazine (1945-10)

  9. Part of my thread that's coming later this week will also discuss how being treated like shit/being disbelieved here (after getting swatted by a pathological liar who owns a huge Canadian instance, with a lot of ignorant supporters who seem unaware or don't care that their guy swatted me) - severely triggered my PTSD on being disbelieved when I tried reporting being SAed as a teen. I was bullied & ostracized for trying to report SA. People believed the rapist & not me. It brought up the same angry, disappointed & people are fucked feelings.
I had almost left Mastodon completely, due to that.

The Epstein Files triggered both of those hella horrible life memories, again. I'd never been swatted before Chad Ohman chose to send that racial violence to my home, shortly after my Dad died. That night was full of unnecessary police traumas too. I'm sick of people pretending to care & I find out they don't, when shit hits the fan.

I don't need fake support. I don't need cowardly folks. That shit ends up hurting me in the long run. I don't need any fucking devil's advocates either. Go hang out with Satan.

  10. Later this week.
I'll talk about my feelings about how most folks are socially conditioned to quickly judge loud, angry POC women but not conditioned to understand why a lot of us are done with being mistreated/disbelieved/treated lesser than because we don't stay calm/polite when we experience ongoing abuses & rarely are supported during our worst experiences. Most folks (fellow POC are included) are socially conditioned to refrain from judging the polite in public white person, who abuses their white privilege & stays calm, after being shady & abusive.

All of this shitass, social programming is fucking ass backwards. It sets up a perpetual system of putting polite talking, calm, perpetrators, over not polite talking, not calm, victims.

  11. A quotation from Joseph Addison

Justice discards party, friendship, kindred, and is therefore always represented as blind, that we may suppose her thoughts are wholly intent on the equity of a cause, without being diverted or prejudiced by objects foreign to it.

Joseph Addison (1672-1719) English essayist, poet, statesman

  12. A quotation from Robert Heinlein

Could it be otherwise here? Could any one sect obtain a working majority at the polls and take over the country? Perhaps not — but a combination of a dynamic evangelist, television, enough money, and modern techniques of advertising and propaganda might make Billy Sunday’s efforts look like a corner store compared to Sears Roebuck. Throw in a depression for good measure, promise a material heaven here on earth, add a dash of anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, anti-Negroism, and a good large dose of anti-“furriners” in general and anti-intellectuals here at home and the result might be something quite frightening — particularly when one recalls that our voting system is such that a minority distributed as pluralities in enough states can constitute a working majority in Washington.

Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988) American writer
Essay (1952-10), “Concerning Stories Never Written,” Revolt in 2100, Postscript (1953)

  14. A quotation from Terry Pratchett

Not for the first time she reflected that there were many drawbacks to being a swordswoman, not least of which was that men didn’t take you seriously until you’d actually killed them, by which time it didn’t really matter anyway.

  22. May is book's month in Uruguay, May 26th being National Book's Day. I promised to release my books freely in a #FediverseEdition proposal.
I expected to do that in their original language (Spanish).
Translation is a full time professional job which I am not prepared to do. However, some LLM helped me improve a bit my amateur translation attempt of my opera prima The Hungarian Soprano.

The main story is a nonlinear chronology which mirrors the dissonant harmonies of La Traviata.
Its structure forces the reader to become the investigator, piecing together a conspiracy the text refuses to spell out.

It is a historical fiction work covering espionage, arms traffic, government cover-ups spanning South America and Europe during the Yugoslavian wars.

The prose’s clinical tone (dates, decrees, serial numbers) sharpens the horror, making The hungarian soprano's death feel not like fiction, but like history’s darkest aria.

    Six more parts await inside covering #fanaticism, #prejudice, #mystery, #psychedelia, #medicaldrama, #travel, #alcoholism, #friendship, #africa, #trans, #MedecinsSansFrontieres, #southamerica, #Brazil, and more.

Hope you enjoy it. If you feel like #commenting, #sharing or #rating it, thanks in advance.

Completely #free. :cc_cc: This book is distributed under a Creative Commons License CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.
