  1. Wednesday Walkabout : Sheridan, Wyoming Edition (but it was Tuesday): After wandering around Sheridan, I went to the Cowboy Cafe. The Cowboy Burger with homemade chips was delicious, and didn't stand a chance. 🍔😋

  2. Three things I'm worried about at our U.S. national parks - overcrowding from shutting down reservations, rewriting history, and overcharging international visitors -

  3. [2/2] Gauja National Park cont. Significant numbers of native caterpillars of Abraxas sylvata | the clouded magpie moth hung from silken threads in our path and appeared to abseil rapidly to the ground when the camera came too close (📷1). Also very abundant was native Equisetum hyemale | the rough horsetail, a rush-like perennial herb we hadn’t consciously seen before. We saw deer in the distance and had a close but brief encounter with Natrix natrix | the grass snake, greyish with a distinctive yellow collar behind its head. In the air were the green-winged Gonepteryx rhamni | the brimstone butterfly (📷2) and the transparent-winged Aeshna cyanea | southern hawker dragonfly (📷3). We identified several new-to-us fungi, including the white Syzygites megalocarpus and Thelephora penicillata, but the bright orange of Pholiota aurivella stood out (📷4); there’s debate as to whether it’s edible.

  4. [1/2] At Siguldā we entered Gaujas nacionālais parks | Gauja National Park, Latvia’s largest and oldest, established around the glacier-formed Gauja River valley. From free all-day 🅿️ near the cableway we began walking downstream of the Turaidas iela bridge, soon arriving at a river beach (📷1). After 5km we came to a footbridge (Kājnieku tilts); just before this are the 15m high Velnalas klintis | Devil’s Cliffs (📷2). This short section of late Devonian sandstone is one of the reddish outcrops the park is known for; it formed 370–350 million years ago. On the return loop we came to Mazā Velna ala | the Small Devil Cave in the 1km-long Piķene Precipice, with a central sandstone pillar and graffiti over every accessible surface (📷3). Closing our loop at Turaidas iela bridge, we added an out-and-back extension to Gūtmaņa ala | Gutman’s Cave, the largest grotto by volume in the mountainless Baltic states. It’s comparatively small and most notable for the historic graffiti on its walls (📷4). A 12km/ 3.5h loop hike.

  6. Here's an interesting juxtaposition: Two young Acoma Family Dancers in traditional regalia at the 800-year-old Aztec Ruins (Structures) National Monument and one of them is looking at their cell phone. I wonder what their teenage ancestors would think if they saw a smart phone and of the things it can do even without a connection?

  10. While driving back home today we stopped at first onroute after entering Ontario from Quebec and on a whim I went into information center and asked if they had any paper maps of Ontario. Nice lady handed us an ontario map and we chatted about how in old days we all used to have big road atlas book in vehicles. She then asked if we would be interested in taking scenic route on our way to SW Ontario and handed us one more map and marked a route for us to take Prov hwy 2 that runs parallel to 401 most of the way. we shut down in car GPS and after nearly a decade, drove old fashioned way with my wife looking at map and calling out major intersections. we followed hwy 2 for 100kms or so and came back to 401 near prescott.
It felt really good to go thru small towns on a small provincial highway that runs alongside St. Lawrence river all the way to lake Ontario taking in beautiful scenery rather than usual hectic drive on 401 while trying to dodge traffic.

PS: Edits to correct typos and grammer.
PPS: OnRoute are service areas along 4 series highways ( equivalent to interstate highways in USA ). OnRoute usually has 2-3 fastfood restaurants, gas station, ATMs from one of the big banks that charge no fees for withdrawals, washroom facilities and convenience store. there is a separate parking for trucks & RVS and passenger cars.

  11. As it was close to camp we stopped for exterior views of Bauskas pils | Bauska Castle, a 15th C. Livonian Order castle ruin melded with a restored 16th C. ducal palace (📷1). En route to our next stop, the brutalist-style Salaspils Memorial is on the site of the “Salaspils Police Prison and Re-Education Through Labor Camp”, run by the Nazis from 1941–44; over half of the Jewish deportees died constructing it and once operational it incarcerated some 23,000 people. Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais brīvdabas muzejs | The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia on the outskirts of Riga is huge, with 118 historic buildings illustrating Latvian rural life from the late 17th C. to mid 20th C. (although it seemed half of those we approached were closed). Highlights include the Usma Lutheran Church, built 1704–05 with a painted wooden ceiling (📷2); the Nida Smokehouse c. 1750 relocated from a fishing village, with an unusual vertical log screen as protection from strong winds (📷3); and a large collection of dowry chests (📷4).

  12. She told me that she was about to head to work, at Arby's, and wouldn't get off until 10 pm. I told her we'd be delighted to entertain ourselves until she got off work, and we spent the day mulling around SLC.

  13. Jaunpils pils | Jaunpils Castle is a water castle, built 725 years ago in 1301 CE by the Livonian Order (📷1). Originally fortified, it was later transformed by Baltic German aristocrats into a residential manor complex in the late 17th C. and now houses a museum and hotel (📷2). An adjacent mill c. 1803 exhibits equipment used for grain processing. To the south of Riga the Baroque-style Rundāles pils | Rundale Palace was built for the Dukes of Courland in the 18th C., designed by renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli (📷3). The interior is a museum containing restored suites and halls. We bought 6 € tickets for the French Gardens only, which feature a maze of allées and pergolas, displays on European rose cultivation, a "green amphitheatre" for performances, ornamental parterres and fountains (📷4). They also contain a military cemetery: Germany invaded and occupied the Baltic states during WWI, when the palace was utilised as a military hospital. We thought the quote therein highly relevant to the Europe of today:

„Wer an Europa zweifelt, der sollte Soldatenfriedhöfe besuchen. Dort kann man sehen, wozu das Nicht-Europa, das Gegeneinander der Völker, das Nicht-Miteinander-Wollen, das Nicht-Miteinander-Können, führen muss.”

“Those who question Europe or despair about Europe should visit military cemeteries. They show what a disunited Europe, the controntation of the individual peoples with ‘don't want to join’ or ‘can't join’ attitudes, must lead to.”

[Jean-Claude Juncker, former PM of Luxembourg/ former President of the Euopean Commission]
