Jaunpils pils | Jaunpils Castle is a water castle, built 725 years ago in 1301 CE by the Livonian Order (📷1). Originally fortified, it was later transformed by Baltic German aristocrats into a residential manor complex in the late 17th C. and now houses a museum and hotel (📷2). An adjacent mill c. 1803 exhibits equipment used for grain processing. To the south of Riga the Baroque-style Rundāles pils | Rundale Palace was built for the Dukes of Courland in the 18th C., designed by renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli (📷3). The interior is a museum containing restored suites and halls. We bought 6 € tickets for the French Gardens only, which feature a maze of allées and pergolas, displays on European rose cultivation, a "green amphitheatre" for performances, ornamental parterres and fountains (📷4). They also contain a military cemetery: Germany invaded and occupied the Baltic states during WWI, when the palace was utilised as a military hospital. We thought the quote therein highly relevant to the Europe of today:
„Wer an Europa zweifelt, der sollte Soldatenfriedhöfe besuchen. Dort kann man sehen, wozu das Nicht-Europa, das Gegeneinander der Völker, das Nicht-Miteinander-Wollen, das Nicht-Miteinander-Können, führen muss.”
“Those who question Europe or despair about Europe should visit military cemeteries. They show what a disunited Europe, the controntation of the individual peoples with ‘don't want to join’ or ‘can't join’ attitudes, must lead to.”
[Jean-Claude Juncker, former PM of Luxembourg/ former President of the Euopean Commission]

[3/3] Riga, cont. We crossed the Riga Canal, which together with the Daugava River encloses the Old Town. Although the pretty Līvu Square dates from after WWII, Meistaru iela is lined with a complex of 18th C. residential buildings (📷1). In the medieval town “The Three Brothers” represent the oldest residential group of buildings in Riga, constructed at different times and in different styles, from 1490 CE (📷2); they now house the Museum of Architecture. Another highlight is “The House of Blackheads”, first built 1334 CE as a meeting venue and in the late 15th C. the abode of bachelor merchants, goldsmiths and ship captains associated as “The Black Heads” (📷4); destroyed during WWII, this is a reconstruction. Just south of the Old Town, Riga Central Market is one of Europe’s largest and part of Riga’s UNESCO listing. Two massive Zeppelin hangars built by the Germans during WWI were purchased by the city, dismantled and re-engineered into five pavilions that would be easier to heat and maintain (📷4); the new market opened in 1930.

[2/3] Riga, cont. Riga’s Art Nouveau period saw about a third of buildings constructed during a time of economic prosperity adopt this style from 1898 to 1915. A well-known example of Eclectic Art Nouveau is located at Elizabetes iela 10b, designed Mikhail Eisenstein and completed in 1903 with a blue tiled facade, detailed peacock motifs and large heads at the top (📷1). We came next to the Esplanade Park, hosting a festival with live music and bubble-blowing (📷2). It’s also the location of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, the city’s largest Orthodox church, converted into a planetarium and café during the Soviet era but rededicated in 2000 (📷3). A short walk away, the Freedom Monument commemorates the soldiers who died fighting for Latvia’s independence from the Russian Empire in 1918, following WWI and the Russian Revolution (📷4); Latvia also marks the restoration of its independence from the Soviet Union, declared in 1990 and attained in 1991.

[1/3] A day in Riga, Latvia’s capital city. Having paid the 5 € entry toll/ congestion charge, we left the van in the resort area of Jūrmala and caught the modern electric, clean, cheap and punctual train into Riga. We got off early for a second breakfast at the Saturday farmer and artisan Kalnciema Quarter Market (📷1); the quarter is home to some very substantive wooden villas, many in need of restoration. On foot from the market we crossed the Daugava River, with views of Riga Castle (📷2). Built by the Livonian Order from 1497 to 1515 CE, the castle is now the official residence of Latvia’s president. From the same bridge we overlooked the skyline of the Old Town and to the Moscow-like Stalinist building of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, the country’s first skyscraper (📷3). Riga’s UNESCO World Heritage status reflects both a well-preserved medieval core and a concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. We continued towards Alberta iela, a street deemed the epicentre of the latter, and began craning our necks to admire the highly decorative facades featuring geometric elements, gargoyles, floral motifs and more (📷4).

@PaulBusch Canada’s now defunct music video channel ***Much Music*** had a regular segment in the 1980s with two guys travelling across the country checking out all the __BIG THINGS__
It’s always been a mystery to me why so very many small towns felt it necessary to put their own landmark on the highway or main entrance but it’s definitely a thing.
Some, like the giant *pysanka* in Vegerville, AB, are wonders — the town engaged a top mathematician to work out the tiling problem to construct it, and it ended up on the cover of his textbook.

Good Morning #Canada
The long range forecast for the eastern half of Canada reports that we can expect a longer fall and a delayed start to winter. That means plenty of time for a #RoadTrip and some out of this world #BigStuffInSmallTowns. Welcome to Moonbeam Ontario where a #UFO has landed, and is still there. The saucer is only 3 metres high which means the green men or women are little. Cannabis recommended while visiting.#CanadaIsAwesome #Immigration

Our second stop in Ķemeru nacionālais parks | Kemeri National Park was at Lielais Ķemeru tīrelis | Kemeri Raised Bog. A 3.5km loop boardwalk (📷1) traverses one of Latvia’s biggest and most popular raised bogs, which began forming some 8,000 years ago when the postglacial climate became warmer and more humid. Such bogs absorb large volumes of rainfall and melting snow, helping to mitigate flooding while also filtering the water—and creating pretty reflections/ habitats (📷2). Aside from sphagnum mosses (crucial in the formation of raised bogs) notable plants adapted to this environment included native Andromeda polifolia | bog rosemary (📷3) and the carnivorous Drosera rotundifolia | round-leaved sundew (📷4). We sat pond-side for a time, entertained by boatmen utilising surface tension to walk on water.

To the west of Jūrmala, our first stop in Ķemeru nacionālais parks | Kemeri National Park was at Sēra dīķu taka | the Sulphur Ponds Trail, about 2km out-and-back. One of the largest raised bogs in the park, here mineral water surfaces through a comparatively thin layer of peat (1–2m thick). This leaves a residue of sulphur and lime on pond vegetation (📷1), altering the mix of plant species from that typical of raised bogs. Darting about we observed Sympecma paedisca | the Siberian winter damsel (📷2) & much heavier orange-coloured dragonflies (📷3). There were especially large examples of native Vaccinium oxycoccos | the bog cranberry on the trail, a rich source of vitamin C (📷4). Other edible berries found in moss bog environments include the crowberry, cloudberry and blueberry. We also identified Zootoca vivipara | the viviparous lizard, notable for giving birth to live young instead of laying eggs as is the lizard way.

At Cape Kolka in Slīteres nacionālais parks | Slītere National Park we took the 2km Kolkas priežu taka | Kolka Pine Trail, which heads into the mosquito-infested forest before returning via the beach. Some of the pines here are 100 years old and are partially buried by up to 2-3m of sand; these dunes are well-covered by moss and lichens. Native Araneus diadematus | the cross orbweaver spun her webs between the trees (📷1). On the beach we met Motacilla alba | the white wagtail, dutifully wagging its tail during an erratic flight against the wind; this is Latvia’s national #bird (📷2). The pink flower is native Cakile maritima | European searocket, which seemed very resistant to both wind and tide (📷3); it’s a member of the mustard family. Reminding us of the NZ dotterel, Calidris alpina | the dunlin also calls these shores home (📷4).
