  1. #Mites of the #Astigmata (#Sarcoptiformes, #Acariformes), such as #Histiostomatidae shown here, practice #direct #spermtransfer via #copulatoryorgans in #males and #females. An #evolutionary #innovation derived from #spermatophoretransfer without copulation in #Oribatidmites. Advantage: a huge egg can develop and new sperm can be stored simultaneously.

  9. I just said it in a different comment and I'll say it here. Apparently there are strands of #DNA that have been broken in #GOP or there's just a plain old #Evolutionary #Split. I started calling psychic evolutionary split a few years ago. Group insanity? #Neanderthal happened. The beat goes on.

  11. So if I understood this article correctly, the key conclusion is this - metamorphosis was not the condition for moving onto land?

    The traditional picture was:

Tetrapods could leave water because they first evolved a tadpole-like larval stage and then metamorphosed.

The new interpretation suggested by these fossils is closer to:

Tetrapods gradually adapted to land over evolutionary time, and they probably did not need a frog-like metamorphosis to do it.

In other words, metamorphosis was probably not a prerequisite for terrestrial life. Instead, the transition from water to land appears to have been a long, gradual evolutionary process affecting the whole life cycle, rather than depending on a distinct larval stage.

    Analogy of two possible scenarios:

    Old model

    • Young live in water.
    • Undergo a major developmental transition.
    • Adults become adapted to life on land.

    New model

    • Young and adults share the same basic body plan.
    • Land adaptations accumulate gradually over millions of years (generations).

    So the narrative shifts from:

Metamorphosis enabled the move onto land

    to:

The move onto land happened gradually, and amphibian-style metamorphosis likely evolved later as a specialized adaptation.

If the #evolutionary layer explains why humans are primed to detect agency, and the #developmental layer explains how gods get installed before thought exists, and the cognitive layer explains how projection hardens into doctrine, the social layer explains how doctrine becomes infrastructure.

A good thread from @JankaWessman. It is heartening to hear a psychiatrist talk about #resilience building and the perils of #diagnosis and the importance of (my words, but on theme 👉🏼) allowing #distress to be distress without necessarily freaking out. Includes a good perspective from #evolutionary #psychology and on the narrow-mindedness of binaries.

#Endemic #species are always interesting from different perspectives, e.g. from an #evolutionary and #ecological point of view. This also applies to #skinks of the genus

    M. #irery and M.

  27. All-new in SEP, Jason Marsh's Evolutionary Approaches to Religion, plato.stanford.edu/entries/rel

Davin Hunt and Linda Zagzebski have also revised their "classical" entry on Foreknowledge and Free Will, plato.stanford.edu/entries/fre. I still remember studying that article for the first time. The theme was of no interest to me, but Zagzebski's skill in thinking aloud just fascinated a philosophically infested fellow earthling.

#Sarcoptes #scabiei var. hominis (#Astigmata, Acariformes) is a skin-#parasitic #mite that feeds on human #epidermal cells. Infection typically occurs via adult, mated #females. The mite has #subspecies found on both #domestic and #wild #animals. It was a very #shortperiod in Earth's history, began ca. 541 million years ago and lasted only ~13-25 million years, during which giant #evolutionary leaps occurred in #animals. I.a.under influence of increased #oxygen levels, #Bilateria, primeval #Protostomia and #Deuterostomia evolved. We Tetrapoda much later derived from the latter.

  34. The #mitochondrion represents a #biological singularity, a discrete #evolutionary event that fundamentally partitioned life on #Earth into two distinct energetic stratums: the #prokaryotic and the #eukaryotic. While colloquially reduced to the moniker of "cellular powerhouse," the mitochondrion is, in functional reality, a highly integrated endosymbiont that serves as the master regulator of eukaryotic physiology
