Freud named the wound. Maslow and Grof asked what happens after it breaks the ego open. Selye’s adrenal glands never read either of them and reached the same fork anyway: rupture, then a split between integration and exhaustion.
Rupture doesn’t produce growth. It produces the condition under which growth becomes possible.

Freud's place in the history of psychology strikes me as not unlike that of Kepler in the history of astronomy; many beliefs these pioneers considered foundational are in fact false, yet to deny the importance of these men in the development of science is perverse.
>>...we need to go back to Freud’s true aim: to treat the soul, not by ministering to the brain, as modern biological psychiatry does, but “by accepting that the ‘soul’—construed as the experiencing, active, living ‘I’—is a part of nature.” <<
I am not well informed enough to comment on the therapeutic value of psychoanalysis. In fact, I am more interested in Freudian theory as a contribution to a naturalistic but nonreductive understanding of the mind.
With regard to the paragraph mentioning Karl Popper's condemnation of psychoanalysis as a "pseudoscience", we should note that few philosophers of science today accept Popper's claim that "falsifiability" provides a criterion that we can apply to separate the scientific from the pseudoscientific. We need to end the simplistic reliance on this supposed criterion and accept instead the complexity and difficulty of characterizing scientific inquiry and knowledge.

'Hysteria was so common among women that if his patients’ stories were true, and if his theory were correct, [Freud] would be forced to conclude that what he called “perverted acts against children” were endemic, not only among the proletariat of Paris, where he had first studied hysteria, but also among the respectable bourgeois families of Vienna, where he had established his practice. This idea was simply unacceptable. It was beyond credibility.

The Ball of Violence: Joe Kenda and the Killer Inside All of Us
Joe Kenda says extreme violence lives in everyone's DNA, waiting for emotion to overrule judgment. My friend is a great detective and a shaky geneticist, and the difference matters. Janna and I have known Lt. Joe Kenda the way friendships form now, across screens and wires, built from years of mutual attention. It began when he found this blog more than a decade ago and, in the phrase that gave an old post its title, stayed followed. He has sent us gifts. He is, in the way that counts, a generous man, courteous to strangers who admire his work and himself in a business that rewards performance. So when he stood at CrimeCon and told a room full of true-crime devotees that every person in it carried a ball of violence encoded in their genes, I listened closely. Then I did the thing you owe a friend whose mind you respect. I checked whether it was true. […]https://bolesblogs.com/2026/07/16/the-ball-of-violence-joe-kenda-and-the-killer-inside-all-of-us/

@NickSchwanck
Yeah, many things Freud captured in his writings still resonate, but also many don’t, & his theory of penis envy is one that doesn’t (unless maybe you equate it with power). He was human, after all (also a bloke - for what that observation is worth re [imaginary] penis envy). He also didn’t ‘believe’ some of his own observations (like the prevalence of incest - as reported by the daughters - in middle class families). On a positive note, he gave us enduring new concepts like ‘Freudian slip’ and transference (often seen expressed as ‘every allegation/accusation is a confession’) & some very readable psychologies/ philosophies/ case studies. 🙂 -

@chu wrote "As scientists, we still carry an increasingly false belief that facts will win the argument for us." 👍👏🏽
One of the greatest scientists of all time was #Freud, whose scientific breakthrough was confirmation that humans are not rational beings. Instead humans are driven in large part by their subconscious.
But a century later, scientists are the leading adherents of the long disproven 18th-century fantasy of human rationality.
When will scientists catch up and avandon #scoentism?

Freud on the psychic rewards of sublimation
Quoted in Mari Ruti’s A World of Fragile Things loc 1375-1381:
#enjoyment #Freud #MariRuti #pleasure #satisfaction #sublimationThe task here is that of shifting the instinctual aims in such a way that they cannot come up against frustration from the external world. . . . One gains the most if one can sufficiently heighten the yield of pleasure from the sources of psychical and intellectual work. When that is so, fate can do little against one. A satisfaction of this kind, such as an artist’s joy in creating, in giving his phantasies body, or a scientist’s in solving problems or uncovering truths, has a special quality

Our pasts are a poem that we have to learn to recite
It is a strange situation because the so-called patient is learning to recite a poem that she has already written (or at least that nobody else has), and already knows; the past, Auden intimates, is a poem we have written but never got quite right; or, the past is a poem we tend to forget, one we learn to recite but where we falter, where we can’t remember or get it wrong, or disclose our history to ourselves; or at least the bit of our history that has made the future so difficult … Freud reveals, in Auden’s view, that the past is a poem that we keep failing to remember; and that we need those poetry lessons called psychoanalysis to learn to recite the poem, and to see where we falter. It is an extraordinary and wonderful idea that our personal pasts are a poem that we have to learn to recite.
Adam Phillips, In Writing, pg 21-22He wasn't clever at all: he merely told
the unhappy Present to recite the Past
like a poetry lesson till sooner
or later it faltered at the line where
long ago the accusations had begun,
and suddenly knew by whom it had been judged,
how rich life had been and how silly,
and was life-forgiven and more humble,
able to approach the Future as a friend
without a wardrobe of excuses, without
a set mask of rectitude or an
embarrassing over-familiar gesture.

The Third Casket: How Shakespeare Taught Us to Choose the Thing We Cannot Refuse
A man walks into a room and finds three boxes waiting for him. One is gold, one is silver, one is lead. He has been told that his whole life turns on which one he opens, and that the rules forbid him to open more than one. The woman he wants stands beside the boxes, unable to help him, bound by a dead father's will. This is the casket scene from The Merchant of Venice, and it is one of the strangest moments in Shakespeare, because the test is rigged twice over. It is rigged inside the play, where Portia's dead father designed the riddle so that only a man who can see past surface will win her. It is rigged outside the play, in the deeper sense Freud uncovered in 1913, where the choice was never free at all, and the man was always going to reach for the box that means his death. […] -
