  1. A quotation from Orwell

I think one must engage in politics — using the word in a wide sense — and that one must have preferences: that is, one must recognise that some causes are objectively better than others, even if they are advanced by equally bad means. As for the nationalistic loves and hatreds that I have spoken of, they are part of the make-up of most of us, whether we like it or not. Whether it is possible to get rid of them I do not know, but I do believe that it is possible to struggle against them, and that this is essentially a moral effort. It is a question first of all of discovering what one really is, what one’s own feelings really are, and then of making allowance for the inevitable bias.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1945-05), “Notes on Nationalism,” Polemic Magazine (1945-10)

  6. A quotation from Arthur Conan Doyle

It is of the first importance not to allow your judgment to be biased by personal qualities. A client is to me a mere unit, a factor in a problem. The emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning. I assure you that the most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance-money, and the most repellent man of my acquaintance is a philanthropist who has spent nearly a quarter of a million upon the London poor.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) British writer and physician

  8. A quotation from Steven Moffat

THE DOCTOR: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly … timey-wimey … stuff.

Steven Moffat (b. 1961) Scottish television writer, producer
    Doctor Who (1995), 03×10 “Blink” (2007-06-09)

  9. A quotation from T. H. Huxley

Agnosticism is not properly described as a “negative” creed, nor indeed as a creed of any kind, except in so far as it expresses absolute faith in the validity of a principle which is as much ethical as intellectual. This principle may be stated in various ways, but they all amount to this: that it is wrong for a man to say that he is certain of the objective truth of any proposition unless he can produce evidence which logically justifies that certainty. This is what Agnosticism asserts; and, in my opinion, it is all that is essential to Agnosticism.

    T. H. Huxley (1825-1895) English biologist [Thomas Henry Huxley]
Essay (1889-06), “Agnosticism and Christianity,” The Nineteenth Century magazine, Vol. 25, No. 148

  10. ncronline.org/opinion/ncr-voic #BishopBarron had been, and still is, one of the greatest #Catholicapologetics of our time, and has a history of progressive takes. His ministry, #WordOnFire, actually sued #Commonweal magazine for an article which compares his comment to a #DonaldTrump one. He's trying to be like too many #priests nowadays, taking this weird impossible #objectivity and #bothsidesism. I like and respect #RobertBarron a lot and encourage him to do more, and speak out more.

  11. Earlier this year, the polling aggregator 538 dropped #Rasmussen Reports from its averages & forecasts, saying that the firm couldn’t meet 538’s standards for #objectivity & methodology. This drew a major backlash from #RightWing #media, especially after Rasmussen published a letter from 538 asking the #polling firm questions about its procedures & biases.

  12. Jack Newfield (1938-2004):

"Objectivity can be defined as the way the mass #media reported the history of the #Vietnam war before the Pentagon Papers; the way the #racism in the North was covered before Watts; the way #autosafety was reported before Ralph Nader... believing people with power and printing their press releases. #Objectivity is not shouting 'liar' in a crowded country."

Mark Jacob: "We need fact-crusading, not just fact-checking."
