Met Norway extended AIFS with a stretched grid that concentrates 2.5 km resolution over the Nordics while keeping a global context. Trained on ERA5 plus just 3.3 years of regional data, it outperforms MEPS for 2m temperature.

The question I get asked most: do ML weather models break in a different climate?
We tested AIFS, GraphCast, and Pangu-Weather across pre-industrial, current, and +2.9K warmer climates. The dynamics hold up -- skillful forecasts across all three states. But two of three models show a cold bias in the warm scenario, drifting back toward their training climate.
Promising generalization. The biases are the challenge to solve next.

My colleagues published the AIFS ensemble system and the loss function design is genuinely clever.
AIFS-CRPS trains a stochastic weather model using the Continuous Ranked Probability Score as its loss. It generates as many ensemble members as needed and outperforms the physics-based IFS ensemble for most variables and lead times. No blurring, realistic variability throughout.
Proper scoring rules as training objectives -- an idea with legs beyond weather.

Aurora: A Foundation Model for the Earth System
"Trained on vast amounts of data, it’s tuned to model the Earth’s systems. Aurora has already shown promise across multiple scenarios, including predicting the weather, tracking hurricanes and air quality, and modeling ocean waves and energy flows."

On the one hand, I do get that cutting the budget to satellites that are used for #weather forecasting does cut back on their standard usage of that to give said forecasts, but on the other hand those forecasts haven't been more accurate than a coin toss to start with and as there's not even a plan set out there by any government entity nor sizable NGO to make emergency shelters #DisabledAccessible to the % of the population that's disabled nor to have them opened with enough time for disabled to go to said shelters, I'm not sure how much if any of a real "problem" this is.
I overall view it as more of an uncovering of a big mess set, than a mess itself thusly.
