  1. Is Islam Compatible with Western Civilisation?

When someone declares that Islam is "incompatible with Western civilisation," why is the West automatically treated as the moral standard? Before you judge whether Islam fits your "Western" world, you must first prove that your world is morally defensible.

  3. RE: mastodon.social/@tzimmer_histo

It is important not to dismiss the fact that roughly one third of Americans still support Trump (and that evidently many are prepared to do so even with violence, physical, economic, and more).

It is equally important not to dismiss that the group that supports him, and the actions and goals of this fascist regime, are a minority, and they know they’re a minority.

  7. Deserves to be widely read/shared! #Pride #Pluralism #Pluralistic #Society

"A stable pluralistic society depends less on universal agreement than on the ability of citizens to coexist without experiencing every visible difference as existential hostility. That requires a kind of restraint. Not every symbol must be decoded. Not every celebration must be morally totalized. Not every public expression requires an immediate declaration of allegiance or opposition.

"What we really owe one another in public life is something both smaller and harder: clarity about our own convictions combined with enough confidence to allow others to inhabit shared civic space without constant fear and escalation.

  12. "What human culture added was interpretation, prestige and normativity: it turned sentience into personhood, and personhood into something sacred. The crucial catalyst was the evolution of language, which, about 200,000 years ago, gave human beings new ways to describe inner life, attribute it to others, and elevate it into a shared ideal."

  15. Brad Onishi examines claims that James Talarico is a “liberal Christian nationalist.” Using the Whitehead & Perry definition, he argues Talarico’s focus on pluralism, church–state separation, and universal dignity contradicts Christian nationalism.

Is he a Christian nationalist of the left? No.

  16. I don't like how fellow Muslims talk about Islam to Western audiences. It's always defensive. Taking the offensive stance once in a while is necessary. Islam doesn't need defending. It's those who paint it as dangerous that need to explain themselves.

Read my critique of Western political frameworks. Consider it a mirror for those who claim to be allies in the West and “anti-imperialist.”

  18. Orientalism and the Denial of Muslim Political Agency

Western political discourse often treats Muslims as politically illegible, interpreting Muslim societies through secular or liberal frameworks. This critique examines how Orientalism embedded in Western political thought denies Muslim political agency and frames Islamic resistance as a threat rather than a response to imperial violence.
