  13. Not a film review

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ appears to be getting good reviews. And of course a vociferous group are damning it for not being realistic. A black actor as Helen, no subtitled Ancient Greek — the horror the horror 🤔. I have not been to the cinema for a couple of years, and may never see it, but the outrage is all highly amusing.

  28. "Fresh from the Greenhouse," Jessica Hayllar, 1885.

Hayllar (1858-1940) was the daughter of British painter James Hayllar, who educated Jessica and her sisters Edith, Mary, and Kate in art. All of them became artists but Jessica was the busiest.

Hayllar was detail-oriented and realistic in her work, similar to her father, but she is less stiffly academic and less sentimental than him; in fact, her father's work is not well-regarded these days, and her work is viewed as superior.

She often did scenes of everyday life, often featuring multiple open doors in an unusual use of space for the time. She also did a few paintings of her sisters at work; in fact, they're often credited with shifting ideas of art as a woman's hobby and instead a woman's profession.

A carriage accident left her wheelchair bound after 1900, but she continued to work, and she led a full and productive life.
