This is so bad. The autor claims to do #philosophy, that is "guided by #science", namely by the laws of #thermodynamics, namely by the ubiquity of #entropy just to then equal entropy with evil.

I do agree, that it is stunning to think about how all of “our” (Including nonhuman lifeforms such as plants) metabolisms are dependent on a total/external energy-influx (aka the sun). #Metabolism IS using out-of-system energy to create states of higher complexity within dynamic local systems, while accelerating out-of-system/total entropy. That just IS the condition of our existence. That is the mode of our being. It seems so absurd to coin this fact (or the fact of ubiquity of entropy) as some kind of absolute #evil.

This is just so weird on so many levels. Let's start with the temporal dimension. If entropy is pure evil, are we then to conclude, that eternal existence would be the essence of good? Entropy will end humanity at some point if nothing else has done so before, that is for sure. But climate catastrophe, to take just one obvious example, is NOT an inevitable effect of entropy — if evil is the end of life and energy-negativ systems are the nature of life, it would seem more logically sound to posit the evil as the thing that lies in "our" (aka human) hands and weird little energy-negative systems that create some states of higher energy-complexity in the eye of their storm as the essentially good (if you have to). But no, instead, the autor claims that he wants to exit anthropocentrism, only to then ascribe the inherently human categories of good and evil to the most basic conditions of our existence, thus achieving the opposite.

Maybe the author is practicing himself the "fashionable nonsense" that he wants to see been "driven out of the academy"?

More importantly, the ethical consequences of this questionable arrangement are devastating: The ethically good that has to stand in, in absence of eternal existence is understood simultaneously as a virtue and as inevitably futile. This is no #ethics for a human future on an exceptional planet, but for individuals who like to think of themselves as exceptional while watching the socio-ecological demise of a planet. It is an ethics for and by #privileged #academics, who still manage to think from a non-position, as if their subject-hood was somehow external to the material world it treats as an object (of knowledge). It is essentially #crypto-conservatism and as such, it fails to do the social and cognitive metabolic work necessary to take side with the ongoingnes of life and with those who are most exposed to its precarity.

It is thus putting wheight to the wrong side of the scales, in this fearful historical moment!

  5. @InsurgoFormica
Inequality and Inequity both have sharply increased the gulf between the wealthy and the rest of us. This is especially so since the mid-70s and the crazy notion that markets self-regulate and wealth trickles down from the top (how did we ever get hoodwinked into believing this shit?)

Now, the whole economic edifice is shaking from its foundations and the #oligarchy is lost to the rest of humanity (just as scrooge was to his family). You all know what comes next don’t you…? Scrooge was ‘saved’ but that’s fairy tale stuff, our reality is much less forgiving.

  10. *the doomsday logic was always internally consistent. The world just did not cooperate.*

What happened was after a pessimistic assessment of a situation was made somebody decided to take action to produce a potentially positive outcome. The invisible hand of a market didn’t just make things magically better. Action of some kind is absolutely necessary. And that action is often spurred on by creating actionable urgency.

  15. EDITOR’S NOTE: THE WORLD IS BURNING, BUT WE DANCE

I think we can all agree to some extent—the world is burning. Or, at least, it seems like it.

I am of the opinion that it has always been on fire, the flames just get wilder or tamer at different times in different generations. But we continue to burn and then we die.

Now, the flames are getting wilder. So many people following world news are stressed about World War 3, Ford has made massive drawbacks to OSAP and here in the region, we have to be concerned about our water supply in the region and the housing crisis is still ongoing and, and, and…

On top of that, there are the Epstein Files. I have been going out of my way to avoid too much information about them at once—it is simply too much for me to process. I know that sounds awful coming from a journalist, but I am also a person and the things the people in those files will not change whether I read them now or later, they will just traumatize me more all at once.

I think over the last few years, the Epstein Files had become a bit of a joke. It was a meme for years and, now that they have been released, their heavily redacted nature is a joke in and of itself. Why release them at all if you’re going to keep protecting the perpetrators?

So, the world sucks and I don’t know what to do about it.

Knowing more and learning more doesn’t seem to be helping, it seems to just be increasing this feeling of helplessness—look at the leaders of our world, look what they did, look at the lack of consequences, the depths of monstrous depravity. What can we even do anymore?

The thing about knowledge is that it is useful and necessary, but it can add to the feeling of helplessness. If you don’t know anything, you are at a disadvantage; if you have incomplete knowledge, you know enough to guess at what to be afraid of. The latter is still more useful than the former.

We must continue to learn. This is important. This is also your world, when it feels like you have no agency, you must remind yourself that you do, that little actions add up to major results; and also support the people around you.

I am terrified—as are many of the people I have spoken to. But this existential dread is not unique to our time or generation. We live in the worst kind of time—an interesting one. For many of us, our worldviews are being altered. In the words of Jessi, our creative director, “the world is rotten to the core”.

Negative things are hard to measure. That is, the absence of something is difficult to measure since you cannot reliably say how much of it there would have been in other situations. Still, it is logical to work toward the world you want, because doing the opposite will work against you.

All of these awful things that are happening are part of our reality, but in order to survive mentally, we must also focus on the good and beautiful things. As much as the world sucks right now and we are bombarded with all the terrible things, there are good and beautiful things. They exist, they are part of our reality as much as the terrible things.

The good and beautiful things, a sense of whimsy to contrast the despair keep me sane. But I will not pretend to have all the answers.

This is not the best timeline. I also hope it’s not the worst one.

We have this little spot in the middle of the vastness, we do our best in our little spot in the middle of the vastness. The flames are getting hotter, but we will dance around them and we will make it through.

  25. Pessimism and impatience is a bad combination. Your motivation is to avoid negative outcomes but you can’t take time to prepare anything solid to ensure you avoid negative outcomes so you end up failing and realising the negative outcome you so feared in the first place.
    #pessimism

  26. #Pessimism gets a bad rep everywhere, unjustly so.

Our (western) society has this immediate reaction to counter any signs or mentions of pessimism. I notice it everywhere. Both within capitalist society at large, as within leftist activist spheres.

While I agree that defeatism, cynicism or apathy are bad, pessimism doesn't necessarily imply those.

On the contrary, I think it's healthy to be more skeptical about #optimism Not because it's a priori bad, but because of how it functions as a vehicle of #consumerism and naive hopefulness that immobilises and, worse, makes one unprepared for setbacks.

I'm trying, for myself, to build a kind of mental resilience without hope and warranted pessimism, not to discourage people, but to show that it's possible. To have something to hold on to beyond defeat and without the certainty of a bright(er) future like in past generations.

  27. Pessimism says the world is generally bad and getting worse.
    It's cynical.
Optimism says the world is generally good and getting better.
    It's naive.

Hope says "I choose to believe that things will get better even when the current circumstances are that they're getting worse."

Hope is neither cynical nor naive. We dare to hope because we have seen something greater and we anticipate its fulfillment.

  30. Dogmatiikan professori Olli-Pekka Vainio kirjoittaa Areiopagilla pessimismistä, areiopagi.fi/2025/10/miksi-pes
