  1. A quotation from Thomas More

They have very few laws, because, with their social system, very few laws are required. Indeed, one of their great complaints against other countries is that, although they’ve already got books and books of laws and interpretations of laws, they never seem to have enough. For, according to the Utopians, it’s quite unjust for anyone to be bound by a legal code which is too long for an ordinary person to read right through, or too difficult for him to understand.

Thomas More (1478-1535) English lawyer, social philosopher, statesman, humanist, Christian martyr
Utopia, Book 2, ch. 7 “Of Their Slaves, and of Their Marriages” (1518 ed.) [tr. Turner (1965 ed.)]

  2. Oh, look! 🙄 Another groundbreaking revelation: deploying web servers at hobby scale is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but with more SSL drama and fewer friends. 🚀 Apparently, if you dare to let others host your cute little project, prepare to reinvent the wheel, because #efficiency and #simplicity have left the chat. 🚪🔒

  3. A quotation from Propertius

Dear love, dear life, you do not need adorning —
hair curled, silk rustling down your slender side.
Not by that heavy scent, those foreign bangles,
is this your natural beauty magnified.
No. Let that beauty shine in its own brilliance,
your charm, your grace, transcend what gold can buy.
Believe me, art is needless. You are lovely,
and love goes naked nor would trick the eye.

[Quid iuvat ornato procedere, vita, capillo
et tenuis Coa veste movere sinus,
aut quid Orontea crines perfundere murra,
       teque peregrinis vendere muneribus,
    naturaeque decus mercato perdere cultu,
nec sinere in propriis membra nitere bonis?
Crede mihi, non ulla tuaest medicina figurae:
nudus Amor formam non amat artificem.]

Propertius (50-16 BC) Roman elegiac poet [Sextus Propertius]
    Elegies, Book 1, Elegy 2, l. 1ff (1.2.1-8) [tr. Carrier (1963)]

  4. RE: mastodon.ie/@JSAMcFarlane/1167

This hit me again so I filed an issue fully expecting the Conan team to reject it. Fair play, they changed their CLI within half a day!❤️ #simplicity #jfrog #software

  5. Sneak preview (more infos upcoming):

If you can’t wait, either, to finally use the Custom Highlight API to avoid adding extra HTML elements and attributes to your pages, try syntaxp!

It’s similar to Prism and highlight.js in that you work with a small script and a style sheet, though it intentionally keeps some things very simple:

  6. "Simplicity is accessibility, not condescension."

This article was written by an Economist, for Economists, but it is relevant to so many more people from so many more fields.

  7. Well into the mid 1990s, I walked about without pagers, mobiles, and other "smartleashes", with just a manual-wind, mechanical watch upon my wrist. I wish, at least, to revert back to the #distraction-free #simplicity of the mid 2000s, pre-smartphone era. I am not yet longing for a brick-like flip-phone with age-appropriate features, like humongous dial pad, massive font, loud ringer, included hearing aid, built-in fall detection, automated ambulance service, etc. That day will come, soon enough. But, in the meantime, it would be swell, if #mobile carriers offer a phone with these features:

    • A rugged (at least IP67), wallet-sized phone with an #eink display just large enough to render text, short emails, and the dial pad
    • Just text, email, calendar, and phone apps; no web browser, no ebook reader, no social media, no games, no side-loadable apps
    • No camera, no video player, no headphone jack, no audio player
    • Just cellular and WiFi; no Bluetooth, no NFC, no other connectivities
    • Just magnetic charging; no charger port
    • A battery that lasts forever and a day on one charge
    • The phone is included with a mobile plan

If such a cheap, free phone is too much to ask of the carriers, I would gladly settle for a free, wallet-sized, dual-touchpad #Morse keyer with a built-in MEMS shaker, and the opportunity to sign up for an SMS-only mobile plan: connected, but barely, as it were. Besides, talking is taxing; texting is tranquil.

  8. Stan Stewart contemplates the complexity of human life. Like living, can anything about music-making be simple?

  11. A MIRACLE IN PLAIN CLOTHES

Who knew the #body could design its own #life if we allowed it?

The mind imagines the body as a problem to control. #Feed it, #distract it, #sedate it, #stimulate it, #argue with it, obey every itch and #craving.

But when the noise settles, the body is not stupid.

It has its own quiet #intelligence.

Given enough steadiness, it begins to choose #simplicity.

Early food. Early water. One black coffee. Breathwork. Walking. Sleep. Warmth. Rhythm.

Not because some stern inner monk is barking orders, but because the body discovers what feels good and clean.

#Temptation is mostly bad design, wearing #perfume.

The body gets promised pleasure and is handed #agitation.

But once it has #tasted real #steadiness, it begins to know the difference.

That may be the #miracle in plain clothes.

The body stops being dragged around by every passing #appetite and begins to live from its own deeper #yes

  12. Travel in Zurich is so easy. Go to the bus stop or tram stop, find blue terminal, enter destination (or day card), buy a ticket. No app, no complicated falderol. Love me some simplicity. Also, day card lasts 24 hours, not just midnight plus some unknowable aliquot. #Zurich #travel #simplicity
