  1. 🧊 How stable is Greenland’s ice sheet? New #MPIM research reveals 4️⃣ different steady states of the Greenland #IceSheet under a pre-industrial climate. Using a novel fully-coupled Earth System-Ice Sheet Model, Malena Andernach et al. found a critical threshold of 70-83% of pre-industrial ice volume, below which 50-80% of its current volume would be irreversibly lost even if returning to pre-industrial CO2 concentrations.

  8. Whilst I'm getting my Friday afternoon paddle in the fantastically glorious weather in Copenhagen it may be a good moment to remind you that we're hiring for several brilliant jobs at @dmidk just now. Including with me on #IceSheet SMB and regional #Climate modelling in #Greenland and #Antarctica

  9. New research has uncovered a #feedbackloop that may be accelerating the melting of
The West #Antarctic #IceSheet, contributing to #sealevelrise. If it were to melt entirely, global sea levels would rise by 5m. Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW), a water mass 4°C above freezing, is flowing beneath the ice shelves in West #Antarctica and melting them from below. Since so much of Ice Sheet lies below sea level, it is vulnerable to this warm water

  10. Finally got round to seeing #Oppenheimer recently – great movie. Listening to the dialogue between Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) that is supposed to have taken place a couple of hours before the nuclear test about the possibility of atmospheric ignition, it occurred to me there is a parallel with the current position of most glaciologists regarding the possibility of Marine Ice Cliff Instability (#MICI) leading to runaway #icesheet retreat.

  11. CW: Antarctic ice shelves mass loss 1997-2021

Annual mass budget of Antarctic ice shelves from 1997 to 2021, Davison etal, 12 Oct 2023.
"the annual mass budget of all Antarctic ice shelves from 1997 to 2021. Out of 162 ice shelves, 71 lost mass, 29 gained mass, and 62 did not change mass significantly. Of the shelves that lost mass, 68 had statistically significant negative mass trends, 48 lost more than 30% of their initial mass, and basal melting was the dominant contributor to that mass loss at a majority (68%). At many ice shelves, mass losses due to basal melting or iceberg calving were significantly positively correlated with grounding line discharge anomalies; however, the strength and form of this relationship varied substantially between ice shelves."

  13. Long-forgotten frozen #soilsample offers a warning for the future
Excavated during the #ColdWar, through 4,560 feet of ice, the team kept drilling 12 more feet into the frozen, rocky soil. Scientists have known for awhile that the #Greenland #icesheet had mostly disappeared at some point in the past million years, but not precisely when. The timing—about 416,000 years ago, with largely ice-free conditions lasting for as much as 14,000 years—is important. arstechnica.com/science/2023/0 #climatechange

  14. The summer solstice is #Greenland's National Day

    PILLUARIT!

Slightly unusually, the ablation season (net ice loss from melt) has yet to start in Greenland, surface melt is average for the time of year. Fresh snow is also still adding ice to the #IceSheet.

A start to the surface ablation season after the 21st June has only happened 4 times since 2000 - but was much more common in in the 80s + 90s.
Remember though - #ice is still lost by #calving of #icebergs

  15. Off to the delightful, shady fjord side campus of @AarhusUni near #Roskilde today. Always a pleasure and our student Mathias Larsen, who is presnting his mid term report has some awesome new work to talk about, using the @CopernicusECMWF #Arctic reanalysis to calculate #Greenland #IceSheet mass budget #SMB #CARRA
    Have a great morning everyone.

  16. Jason Box is now talking about #PROMICE data in #CARRA (#Copernicus #Arctic Regional #Reanalysis) and using the latest insights for understanding the #Greenland #IceSheet
