The team used an acidic solution to trigger a sustained blue glow from the organisms. These living structures could eventually serve as battery-free light sources or sensors that detect environmental toxins.

  6. #Boulder-area trail peeps: Boulder County is considering doing an alternating-use pilot study (limiting certain days to bike only or foot/horse only).

IMHO, this is a solution looking for a problem. Conflicts are rare and this is going to result in a massive decrease in number of OS visitors because no one can figure out if it’s a bike day or a foot travel day (like certain places in Jeffco).

Current update on SB26-090 (Colorado's misguided "wrong to repair" bill):

After spending a bunch of the senate session on Tuesday in debate over a bunch of amendments, the bill is tentatively on the calendar for tomorrow, again, to have its third reading in the senate.

Please keep up the pressure - Coloradans and the rest of the country rely on being able to fix broken things in order to protect them from cyberattack. The repair is not the problem here.

  9. 🚨 Current update on the Colorado bill (SB26-090) that would rescind "right to repair" for "critical infrastructure" 🚨

    Please share widely.

The bill is currently scheduled for "third reading (final passage)" in the Colorado senate for Monday, April 13, first thing in the morning. If you have delayed until now doing something, this is your moment to act. You do not need to be a Colorado, or even a US resident, to speak up!

    leg.colorado.gov/agenda/floor/

Paul Roberts (secure-resilient.org) is putting together a list of people willing to be signatories to a letter opposing this bill. Please reach out to him if you want to sign on to that letter.

Wayne Seltzer, who runs the Boulder U-fix-it Clinic, shared a link to this petition/letter to legislators: actionnetwork.org/letters/supp

Danny Katz of CO PIRG is running a petition drive to send messages to the legislature. Petition link: pirg.org/colorado/take-action/

Finally, and this is important, rep. Brianna Titone (the author of the original 2024 right to repair bill) informed me that some of the advocates for right to repair who have been writing to legislators have been threatening or offensive in their language they used in their messages. This is unhelpful and will not persuade lawmakers to change their minds, so please try to encourage others to remember that these legislators -- who are on the fence -- can be persuaded, and are not (necessarily) inherently evil or corrupt, and just lack understanding.Talk/write to them with that frame of mind.

    Thank you!

By using a #spacecraft to generate a magnetic field, scientists could nudge metallic #space #rocks into safer orbits. The method offers a more controlled alternative to physically crashing probes into asteroids.

  11. Really wild stuff coming out of the University of Colorado from this OpenAI deal. Take this quote for instance:

«Before AI tools became ubiquitous, students and junior workers typically turned what they learned into artifacts—they would write a software function, develop a mathematical proof, draft an essay or sketch out a design... Now that AI can easily create artifacts, such outputs can no longer be considered the endpoint of mental work.»

This is how disconnected these people are from what academics, or anyone creative, actually do. I know a chatbot likely regurgitated this line, but someone chose to post it.

If that wasn't enough, OpenAI's president gave millions of dollars to Trump almost simultaneously with this deal going though at CU. It's absurdly easy to follow the money.

  15. Are there any good #FOSS alternatives to #Mozilla #Thunderbird with #NoAI ? When I was at the University of Denver I installed Thunderbird once so I could have a local copy of my work emails (through Microsoft), then I deleted it. I've now tried the same trick at CU Boulder (also Microsoft) and been told I need to request access to use Thunderbird. This still might work to back up my emails, but lately I've been thinking it would be nice to have an application instead of using a web client so I get local backups automatically and have a clearner interface. Is there anything good in this space that hasn't been subject to #enshittification ?

  17. It seems that CU Boulder spent a bunch of the state's money on creating an AI-generated video (youtube.com/watch?v=BkDLk4PqTLc) which must be viewed by faculty in order to fill out a conflict of interest form. I wonder if there were any conflicts of interest in the waste of resources this represents. Can professional researchers not be expected to read a page of instructions?

Xcel Energy prepares for likely Public Safety Power Shutoff, working to limit customer impact

Customers outside PSPS may also be impacted by wind, power outages

DENVER— (December 16, 2025)— Xcel Energy continues to refine the areas and number of customers impacted by a likely Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) tomorrow, December 17. The PSPS, is being considered to reduce the risk of wildfire, keeping communities and customers safe. Weather forecasts include very high winds and dry conditions along the Front Range. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for this weather event.

Xcel Energy is planning for a likely PSPS beginning around 10 a.m., impacting around 52,000 customers in Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties. Risk assessments based on the latest forecast data and advanced modelling tool outputs, as well as recent improvements to grid infrastructure, have enabled us to reduce the size of the affected areas. Due to changing weather conditions, the PSPS event is now expected to begin at 10 a.m. rather than at 12 noon."
