  1. Any #geography nerds on Fedi? I was doing some #GameDev research, and noticed the weirdly parallel lakes west of the marker for Ikryaninskiy rayon: wego.here.com/p/here%3Acm%3Ana

Is that from erosion? Glaciation during the last Ice Age? Baba Yaga? 🤔

  2. I have made claims about a lagoon of unfrozen water along the east coast of england and scotland during the last ice age. The evidence for this and other absurd claims is laid out here.

Understanding #snowballEarth extreme climates — when the world is covered in ice
New research in #Geology suggests an unexpected mechanism could have caused a global #glaciation to last for 56 million years, revealing the inner workings of the #carbonCycle

  5. A thought-provoking and wide-ranging talk yesterday by Andy Wickert, University of Minnesota.

His group has tracked changes in drainage patterns during the final deglaciation of Minnesota (~11 thousand years ago) to changes in erosion rates since the advent of mechanical agriculture.

  6. Small Waterbodies Of Large Conservation Concern - Towards An Integrated Approach To More Accurately Measuring Surface Water Dynamics

    “HIGHLIGHTS
    • Hydrologic models were used to assess remotely sensed surface water estimates.
    • The accuracy of satellite surface water estimates diminished for waterbodies < 2 ha.
    • Vegetation reduces accuracy of surface water detection, especially during wet years..."

Scientists are coming closer to understanding the period of time during Marinoan period. This was about 720 million years ago and the earth is called "snowball earth' during this time. The period lasted somewhere between 4 and 15 million years ago. Scientists have been trying to narrow the time period down. Now by using isotopic dating of ash layers this has been narrowed to it lasting 4 million years.

  8. A bit of fun with Simon Clark explaining ice ages and #glaciation across the #geological record in a series of incredibly nerdy sweaters (I think I would wear the one with the icosahedron) while trying to figure out what would it take for #Hell (the towns) to #freeze over.

  9. An #IceAge is a period of long-term reduction in Earth's temperature, resulting in the expansion of continental ice sheets and alpine glaciers. These periods are characterized by significant changes in climate, sea levels, and ecosystems.

Earth is currently in the ice age called #Quaternary #Glaciation.

  10. Glen Roy's "parallel roads", north of Roybridge in Lochaber. Long held in folklore to be hunting paths used by the Celtic warrior Fingal, they actually mark different shore lines of a vast ancient loch created by glacial ice. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/roy
