When we picture the effects of melting #glaciers , many of us think of rising seas and retreating ice streams. But along #greenlands coastline, a quieter transformation is underway, one that is affecting how the ocean breathes and how it reacts to and buffers itself against change.

A growing network of #meltwater lakes at the edge of the #Greenland ice sheet is #accelerating the flow of major #glaciers, potentially increasing the pace of global #SeaLevelRise. Warmer air and sea temperatures have led to the loss of around 264 gigatons of ice every year in Greenland since 2002, causing sea levels to rise by 0.8 millimeters annually. But a new study by the University of Leeds examining glacier behavior across the entire ice sheet has highlighted a lesser-known feature that is amplifying this mass loss—the freshwater lakes forming as the ice retreats.

"#Glaciers serve as reservoirs for #AntibioticResistanceGenes, or #ARGs, and other #microbes. When they are released from the ice, they enter our water systems, posing a major health risk to people downstream.
"Millions of people get their water from glacier-fed rivers and lakes. ARGs are strands of DNA that make bacteria more resistant to drugs. When ARGs in #meltwater make their way into our water supply, they become a global public health risk.
"The study emphasizes the importance of viewing glaciers, rivers, and lakes as being part of a 'glacier continuum.' This means they are an interconnected system rather than separate environments.
Why are melting glaciers concerning?
"From our gas-powered cars to #overconsumption, human activity has contributed to the production of heat-trapping gases that warm the planet. Rising global temperatures have caused glaciers to rapidly melt, causing elevated sea levels and releasing ARGs.

"A vast network of ocean currents nicknamed the 'great global ocean conveyor belt' is slowing down. That’s a problem because this vital system redistributes heat around the world, influencing both temperatures and rainfall.
"The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation funnels heat northwards through the Atlantic Ocean and is crucial for controlling climate and marine ecosystems. It’s weaker now than at any other time in the past 1,000 years, and global warming could be to blame. But climate models have struggled to replicate the changes observed to date – until now.
"Our modelling suggests the recent weakening of the oceanic circulation can potentially be explained if meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet and Canadian glaciers is taken into account.
"Our results show the Atlantic overturning circulation is likely to become a third weaker than it was 70 years ago at 2°C of global warming. This would bring big changes to the climate and ecosystems, including faster warming in the southern hemisphere, harsher winters in Europe, and weakening of the northern hemisphere’s tropical monsoons. Our simulations also show such changes are likely to occur much sooner than others had suspected. "
