Original article (paywalled, log in to your local university library to read)

Poinelli et al. Nat. Geosci. (2025)

Ocean submesoscales as drivers of submarine melting within Antarctic ice cavities.

  2. We made it to the Ross Ice Shelf edge this afternoon. I gave a quick science talk on ice shelves on board when we were an hour away and at the end got to say - "ok go outside an look at a real one - in fact the biggest one". People were suitably blown away - a 40 m high wall of ice that disappeared into the horizon in both directions. #Oceanography #Antarctica #IceShelves #TAN2502

  3. 'Warm water' from #deepsea flowing towards one of #Antarctica's largest #iceshelves
Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne #IceShelf may be under threat due to relatively warm water from the deep sea flowing towards the shelf.
The melting of a massive ice shelf like FRIS would ultimately lead to huge #sealevelrise. However, researchers still have a lot to learn about this region, and it's unclear whether the increased flow of warm water is linked to #climatechange.

  4. One of the coolest field missions in @OceanIceEU is Gothenburg University's UAV Huginn, that swims under #Antarctica's #IceShelves
Devastatingly, Huginn did not return from it's last mission...

  5. Staying in #Antarctica + #IceShelves Stina Wahlgren of Gothenburg University showed some cool results from the Huginn AUV, which mapped the underside of Dotson ice shelf, revealing interesting scoops and swirls in the structure, interesting for @OceanIceEU models to consider

  6. @martinvermeer

“It’s one more thing that we need to monitor,” Gavin Schmidt said. “We need to get a better understanding of what’s happening under #IceShelves. Currently, there are no global #climate models that include these effects, or that can predict these effects. And that should be fixed.”

[1 reason this can’t be overlooked/discounted, is that right-wing #FossilFuel advocates #ClimateChange deniers keep pointing to “ice cubes in water” to reject #ClimateSolutions]

  7. An absolute MUST follow on here. @wavygk is currently posting fantastic images and lots of scientific insight from #Antarctica (lucky guy).

[email protected] - Front of the Ross Ice Shelf - its nigh on impossible to do something around 800 km long justice in a photo... what's more incomprehensible is there a cavity beneath this which stretches back 800 km. And these are only now starting to feature in climate models. #Antarctica #Climate #IceShelves

  10. Really outstanding work from Leeds Uni Remote sensing, led by Ben Davison, on observed changes to #Antarctic #IceShelves

This was a highlight presentation of @OceanIceEU workshop bringing #EarthObservation + #climateModelling communities together earlier this year - which I am now coincidentally writing up as a report + recommendations for publication as I travel by #crossBorderRail today...

Worth a read, Ben is really good at beautiful easy to interpret graphics.

  11. Very cool that some of our #Ukraine partners in @PolarRES have made it to Utrecht in person to present some of their results on #Lagrangian #ParticleTracking under the Ross and Filchner-Ronne #IceShelves as part of the #PolarRES + #PolarCORDEX meeting

  12. #SeaIce around the #polar regions plays a critical part in #protecting the adjacent #IceSheets. Less sea ice means less #sunlight will be reflected back to #space, causing #waters to #warm more & #destabilize surrounding #ice & #glaciers. #Coastlines are also much more exposed w/less sea ice, removing a buffer that could help protect #melting #IceShelves or ice sheets.

  13. What is a #climatecoffee ?

Kicking off now with Romain Millan on #Antarctica and #IceShelves

The first in the new @OceanIceEU organised series with the European climate research alliance.

  14. Preparing a breakfast talk for the research group @dmidk this morning and I'm reminded just how good (in a slightly bleak way) this #satpic animation showing #Antarctica's #IceShelves in retreat...

  15. Got to give a science talk in the very fancy theatre at ICM in Barcelona - some Aotearoa ocean science snippets and then some of our recent ice shelf work…

  16. We finally have submitted our study about emulating #Antarctic sub-shelf #melt rates simulated by a cavity-opening ocean #model with a #NeuralNetwork

Main conclusion: a neural network is at least as good in parameterising basal melt rates as traditional physics-based parameterisations!

  17. How much do #Antarctica #IceShelves melt? And what is driving those melt occurrences? That's the question our latest paper is trying to answer.

  18. A new twist on an older idea: a temperature threshold for #Antarctic #IceShelves
But @jmvanwessem @steflhermitte et al show #Snow is key:

Variable temperature thresholds of melt pond formation on Antarctic ice shelves

"For relatively wet ice shelves, the −5 °C temperature threshold was confirmed; but cold + dry ice shelves such as Amery, Ross + Filchner-Ronne are more vulnerable than previously thought, with threshold temperatures well below −15 °C. "

  20. To start off the 1 paper per week challenge of this year, here is my #PaperOfTheWeek, or rather #PreprintOfTheWeek 😀

    tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc

They present and evaluate a new one-layer dynamical model to improve the fine-scale representation of #melt patterns under #Antarctic #IceShelves. Interesting to see how this can be applied to improve future #SeaLevel projections!
Quite technical but interesting for #ocean and #IceSheet #modelers!
