Complaints to the BBC and the prospect of a Judicial Review
Laura Kuenssberg interviewed Deputy Leader of Reform Richard Tice on Sunday. Kuenssberg pushed Tice on the Reform UK councillor who suggested “melting down Nigerians to fill pot holes”. Kuenssberg also pushed Tice on the astonishing private £5 million personal donation to Farage.
It is telling that Tice tried to dodge the questions.
During the interview, Richard Tice deflected criticism of Reform politicians by referring to the “anti-semitic Green Party”. Laura Kuenssberg ignored this and did not challenge it. Surely, when such offensive statements are made, the interviewer has a duty to challenge them and present the other side of the argument. I have complained to the BBC about this.
Palestine Campaigners outside BBC Radio SheffieldThe Green Party have been called anti-semitic because they oppose the genocide and war crimes in Palestine. There is nothing anti-semitic about this. The many marches that have taken place calling for a Free Palestine are not hate marches and always include big contingents of Jewish people. To call the only political party in the UK with a Jewish leader “anti-semitic” is beyond the pale.
Richard Tice again referred to ‘Net Stupid Zero’ and, as always, the BBC said nothing about the consequences of that Reform UK policy. Unless the rich nations step up their commitment to replace fossil fuel use as soon as possible, we face climate tipping points such as the collapse of AMOC, leading to the collapse of our society and the death of billions of people.
You can see the interview here.

The Earth. Keep it liveableI have also complained about BBC Radio 4’s coverage of the Local Election campaigns.
BBC Radio 4 (and no doubt other stations) has been negligent in its lack of questioning of politicians on the climate catastrophe and the imminent threat of tipping points, such as the collapse of AMOC.
In the week preceding the May 7 election, Today interviewers didn’t ask party spokespeople questions about climate change, in spite of the fact that in the months leading up to the election the London School of Economics had published several reports on the fact that climate change will ‘hammer incomes and government budgets’ and that ‘climate change impacts are intensifying, yet adaptation efforts are not keeping pace with the scale and urgency of emerging risks.’
We face a national security risk, as outlined in the National Emergency Briefing, yet this is not being talked about on your programmes.
No party spokespeople were questioned or asked to comment on the fact that seven Reform-led councils have ‘scrapped’ their climate targets, and climate change denial has been expressed by Reform UK councillors in five councils. Some councils have removed content about climate change from strategy documents.’ (London School of Economics report). The BBC must prioritise discussion and debate of the National Emergency Briefing and force politicians to respond to it. Failing to do this means the BBC is part of the problem. The BBC should screen the National Emergency Briefing film on prime-time television as soon as possible.I will keep you updated when I get replies to these complaints. Please help put pressure on the BBC to tell the full truth about the climate and nature emergencies and what is happening in Palestine. When you see or hear a programme that talks about climate change but fails to mention the most dangerous aspects of it, like the collapse of AMOC or the death of rainforests, make sure to send a complaint in. Likewise, when people are accused of anti-semitism for simply opposing the Israeli Government and the Genocide they are committing, send in a complaint. https://www.bbc.co.uk/contact/complaints
Meanwhile, Jonathon Fuller is making progress in the preparation for taking the BBC to Judicial Review.

Everything you want to know about AMOC changes but were afraid to ask?
The Nordic council report on the impact of #AMOC slowdown has some very powerful but immensely illustrative stories. -

Keep it in mind: the #climatecrisis and the #shutdown of the #AMOC are the REAL problems. And they don’t disappear, if Trump, Merz etc. look away from it.

Why are scientists more concerned than ever before?
DW TV has a clip on the risk of instability of the Atlantic ocean overturning circulation #AMOC.
https://www.dw.com/en/ocean-current-europe-depends-on-is-at-risk-of-collapsing/video-77045279 -
“It is by the deep, hidden currents that the oceans are made one”*…
The global conveyor belt, shown in part here, circulates cool subsurface water and warm surface water throughout the world. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is part of this complex system of global ocean currents. This illustration is captured from a short video produced by NOAA Science on a Sphere.A significant part of the earth’s climate infrastructure is under threat. New research suggests the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (or AMOC) could weaken by half this century with wide ranging consequences for weather, food, and sea levels across the world. Alison Smart and Charlotte Venner unpack the past and ponder the future of this critical ocean current…
London, England, and Quebec City, Canada sit at roughly the same latitude (51°N and 47°N, respectively) but have vastly different climates. Historically, Quebec City had 99 freezing days in an average year—weather you might expect from its relative proximity to the Arctic—but London only experienced three freezing days in an average year, despite being slightly further north. This difference is largely due to an ocean current called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which distributes warmth from the Tropics via the Atlantic Ocean.
Now, impacts from climate change are weakening the AMOC, and it could collapse entirely in the near future. AMOC collapse would rapidly make regions of the Northern Hemisphere with historically mild weather colder and harsher, while triggering irreversible changes in the global climate.
The AMOC is both the product of a stable climate and a factor in maintaining weather patterns around the planet. To plan for future scenarios, we need to first understand how the AMOC works and what might happen if it collapses…
[Smart and Venner explain the AMOC and outline the ways in which it shapes the climate of regions around the world…]
… Even minor weakening of the AMOC can significantly impact local climates, as has happened several times in the past 12,000 years. A “Little Ice Age” occurred in Europe in the Middle Ages, likely connected to a disruption in the AMOC. Just a slight slowdown in the AMOC could make Europe colder overall, disrupt global precipitation patterns from South America to India, and worsen drought in Africa.
The more freshwater pours into the ocean, and the more ocean temperatures rise, the weaker the AMOC becomes—until, at some threshold, it could stop moving altogether.
It is possible that the AMOC will collapse entirely if warming continues. There is no agreed-upon global average temperature at which collapse becomes certain, but there are signals we can track and historical examples we can examine to predict the likelihood of collapse…
… The consequences of total AMOC collapse would be far-reaching, severe, and irreversible on timescales relevant to humans. AMOC collapse would cool parts of the Northern Hemisphere and warm parts of the Southern Hemisphere by multiple degrees Celsius and drastically alter weather around the world.
In Europe, winter temperatures would drop, cold snaps could increase, and winter storms would intensify. A 2025 research letter found that, even if global warming reached 2°C, AMOC collapse would make Europe colder than it is today, creating extreme winters in Northwestern Europe in which record cold might reach -20°C (-4°F) in London and -50°C (-58°F) in Scandinavia. Even milder cold days would increase, with approximately 150 to 180 frost days per year in Utrecht, Netherlands, compared to a historic average of about 53. Precipitation would likely shift and decrease, potentially drying out some parts of Europe and making others wetter.
Around the world, other climates would change, likely in less extreme ways.
- North America. The East Coast of North America would likely experience rapid sea level rise as the gravitational pull of the AMOC weakens, as well as cooler conditions, with some parts of Eastern Canada and the North Atlantic coast cooling by several degrees Celsius, erratic storms, weather variability, and more intense hurricanes.
- Tropics & South America. Without the AMOC, the ITCZ would shift south, potentially leading to drying in the Northern Tropics and parts of the Amazon and wetter conditions in the Southern Tropics.
- Africa. Because of the shift in the ITCZ, West Africa and the Sahel would be much drier, experiencing severe and frequent drought and reduced rainy seasons. The Sahel could possibly transition from a semi-arid climate to hot dry desert.
- Asia. Because of the shift in the ITCZ, weakened and more erratic monsoons in Asia would lead to increased drought and a higher risk of extreme precipitation events.
These changes may occur rapidly, create climate risks, and cause systemic disruption in affected regions. The collapse of the AMOC would also be a tipping point in the global climate, meaning that the changes would likely be difficult, if not impossible, to reverse on human timescales.
Once the AMOC passes a critical threshold of weakening, called a tipping point, it would continue to weaken until it collapses. AMOC collapse could also create systemic impacts that activate other tipping points as well as feedback loops that could generate further warming.
For example, if AMOC collapse contributed to changes like a permanent dieback of the Amazon Rainforest or increased ice loss, those changes would generate their own warming effect on Earth’s climate. A 2026 paper suggests that AMOC collapse would result in substantial carbon release from oceans and add around 0.2°C in additional atmospheric warming.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions may slow warming enough to reduce weakening and delay collapse. If collapse begins, it is unlikely we could stop it. There is no feasible technological way to reengineer ocean currents…

As we put on our sailin’ shoes, we might send interconnected birthday greetings to Andrew Sharrett; he was born on this date in 1946. An archaeologist, his application of world-systems theory to questions of change on large, often global, scale made him one of the most influential archaeologists of the late 20th/early 21st centuries. Sharrett is best known for his theory of the secondary products revolution; but his work touched on a broad range of fundamental human developmental issues: global migration and colonization, the spread of agriculture, the development of metallurgy and urbanism, and the development of new forms of consumption, to name a few. All of those dynamics were, as Sharrett observed, shaped in significant ways by the climatic conditions in which they unfolded.

The ocean system that shapes Europe’s climate.
For generations, the mild and temperate climate of north-western Europe has been credited to one legendary force: the Gulf Stream.
However, the Gulf Stream is just one part of a much more complex system called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC.
What the AMOC does and how it shapes our climate.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (#AMOC) acts as a global conveyor belt, moving tropical heat to the North Atlantic. Its collapse could plunge Europe into deep cooling and shift tropical rain belts, triggering worldwide weather chaos and agricultural failure.

Is global warming tipping key Atlantic ocean currents towards ‘collapse’?
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a vast system of ocean currents that helps to distribute heat around the world.
By transporting warm water from the #tropics northwards and cold water back southwards, the #AMOC keeps #Europe warm and plays a role in controlling global #rainfall.
It connects into an even larger network of #ocean currents that continuously moves #water, #nutrients and #carbon around the world.
Now, the AMOC is under threat from human-caused #ClimateChange, as warming seas, melting ice and increased rainfall upset the temperature and salt balance of the North Atlantic.

Who should I vote for in a climate emergency?
It is getting increasingly difficult to sort out fact from fiction when discussing local politics. Blatant lies are sometimes told on election leaflets, and misinformation is deliberately spread on social media. How do we get to the truth, and who should we vote for to prioritise environmental action?
Greenpeace has been on the streets encouraging people to register to vote and support politicians who prioritise tackling the climate and nature emergencies. One volunteer told me, “I talked to a group of workmen in hi-viz. They were very disillusioned with politics, 3 of the 4 said they were not going to vote because of the cost of living and suggested the Council wasn’t going to change things. Then one very unexpectedly said, “Look at this Council, if they wanted to do something about cars, they’d make public transport free!”
At present, Sheffield City Council has 84 Councillors. There are 36 Labour, 27 Liberal Democrats, and 14 Greens that share power in a cooperation agreement. The opposition is made up of 6 Independents and one Reform Councillor. So talk in election leaflets of one party funding this, or being responsible for that, is a bit disingenuous, as the funding comes mainly from us, the Council Tax payers and Government grants. To get anything done, there has to be agreement between at least two of the parties. One third of the Councillors are up for election this year, but due to resignations, two wards have two votes.
I don’t think there has ever been a broader choice of candidates in Sheffield elections. Most wards have the choice of Labour, Lib Dem, Green, Conservative, TUSC and Reform. There are also candidates from Restore UK in some wards. This is a party further to the right of Reform, but they are called “Independent” on the ballot papers. These should not be confused with Independent candidates in some wards, standing on a pro-Palestine ticket. With such a massive choice of candidates, if the vote is evenly split, one party could win with a very small proportion of the vote. Our first past the post voting system was designed for two-party contests. The Government must bring in fair proportional voting as soon as possible.
This opinion poll indicates that the Labour vote has collapsed, and they could lose all their seats in this election. The poll has them hanging on to Darnall by just 2%. Greens could gain Labour strongholds Manor Castle, Walkley, Burngreave and Crookes and Crosspool and Ecclesall and Graves Park from the Lib Dems. while holding City, Hillsborough and Gleadless Valley. Reform could gain Birley, Woodhouse, Southey, Shiregreen and Brightside from Labour and Beighton from the Lib Dems. Lib Dems could gain East Ecclesfield from Labour, and hold Beauchief, Dore and Totley, Fulwood, Mosborough, Stannington and West Ecclesfield. So overall, massive gains for Greens and Reform and a massive collapse for Labour.
But this is only a poll: the only one that counts is on May 7th.
So, which parties should interest you if you are making environmental issues your priority? Three parties, Reform, the Conservatives and Restore, are now ideologically opposed to the concept of Net Zero carbon emissions. They oppose measures that improve life for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users in pursuit of drivers’ votes. They oppose renewable energy schemes in favour of a Trump-like “drill baby drill” attitude, hoping to exploit more oil in the North Sea, which we can’t afford to burn if we are going to avoid climate tipping points. Their disbelief or scepticism in the science of climate change is deeply worrying, but not surprising when you examine where their funds come from. These parties have deep vested interests in oil and tech companies and the millionaires associated with them.
I could only find local manifestos for 3 parties, Labour, Lib Dems and Greens. If you are not sure who to vote for, do examine the policies carefully.
It’s hard to find mentions of environmental issues in most election leaflets. But it’s disappointing to see untruths being told. Some Labour leaflets and social media posts, for instance, are taking full credit for Green Bonds, an idea brought to the Council by the Green Party. The Bonds quickly raised £1 million pounds for solar panels on school roofs.
Another hot potato is the Greenbelt. Liberal Democrats and Reform are both criticising the Green Party for voting for the Local Plan, and campaigners have bombarded social media with memes, objecting to the Local Plan. The Lib Dem leaflet for Ecclesall says “The Lib Dems voted to protect our Greenbelt and nature from Labour’s building plans. The Green Party voted with Labour to pave over our greenbelt in yet another let down!” The Green Party say that a Local Plan is vital to stop developments throughout the Greenbelt and in other areas of special interest not protected by the Greenbelt. They voted to give as much protection to the Greenbelt as possible and will oppose planning applications on Greenbelt land in future. So they did not vote to “pave over the Greenbelt”, they voted to protect it.
Only the Green Party mentions the climate crisis in their manifesto, but one crucial detail is missing from all the election leaflets I’ve seen. How are we going to meet the Council’s commitment to reach Net Zero by 2030?
This graph, produced by Sam Wakeling, shows that we are way off track. The Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019, but has never taken monitoring of CO2 seriously. Extinction Rebellion was saying at the time that we need to aim for Net Zero by 2025. They were right. Today, we may already be too late to save the Coral Reefs, which are home to a quarter of the planet’s marine species. We are dangerously close to other tipping points, like the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Ocean Circulation, without which Britain would be 5 degrees C colder, with agricultural production falling dramatically worldwide. All politicians, at every level of Government, need to be prioritising climate action and working out how we can be more resilient as a country, ready for shocks like the closure of the Straits of Hormuz or the next extreme weather event.
I don’t blame political parties or the electorate for their silence on AMOC and other climate tipping points. Political parties need to attract votes and appeal to the demands of their supporters. But most people are completely in the dark regarding the threats climate tipping points now pose to us. And the electorate isn’t demanding climate action because the mainstream media don’t inform them. This week George Monbiot published an excellent article on AMOC, but there has been very little on the BBC or the popular press. Maybe this will change soon, because the BBC are being taken to a tribunal for suppressing the most important climate news. There will be more on this in future posts.
If we are to have any chance of meeting Sheffield’s emissions target, we urgently need more Green Councillors in the Town Hall who will make the climate and nature emergencies a priority. Wherever you live in Sheffield, Vote Green Party on May 7th.

A New Idea to Save the #AMOC? Dam the #BeringStrait.
Blocking the narrow waterway between #Russia and #Alaska could help stabilize a vulnerable system of #ocean currents, scientists found.
In a study published on Friday in the journal Science Advances, the researchers show that, under certain conditions, such a #dam could prevent a collapse of a network of ocean currents, known as the AMOC, that plays a central role in regulating #Earth’s #climate.

Term of the decade: ”the billionaire death cult”
' So why is this not all over the news? ' (…) ’ Well, in large part because oligarchic power has championed a model of climate impact that bears little relation to reality: that is, they have a hypothesis about how the world works that is completely detached from scientific findings. '

"An OECD study found that the combined effects of an AMOC collapse at 2.5°C of global warming could reduce the percentage of global land suitable for growing wheat and maize by over a half, compared with a world without climate change (OECD 2021). […] Collapse would also disrupt the African, American and Asian monsoons, with further adverse consequences for agriculture and ecosystems (Lenton et al 2023)."

🆕 While the #AMOC is showing signs of slowing down, its Nordic branch #NOC is projected to strengthen. Researchers have now identified a density-driven mechanism that links these opposing trends.
“The stability of the NOC and its projected increase have been viewed by some as a contradiction to the weakening AMOC. But our findings tell us the opposite. The strengthening of the NOC is a physical consequence of AMOC weakening,” said co-author @rahmstorf of PIK.
