  1. Are you an MSc student looking for a thesis topic? Interested in Greenland/Antarctica atmosphere and ice sheet processes? Background in meteorology, geography, earth science or physics (or other quantitative discipline?

Then do I have the project for you...
I have just updated my list of open research ideas here:

    sternaparadisaea.net/thesis-pr

But I'm particularly at thsi stage interested in finding candidates to work on field data, satellite data, machine learning and parameterisation development and evaluation.

  2. Not all giant icebergs, or "megabergs," release fertilizing nutrients into the ocean as they melt; their capacity to stimulate marine life and absorb atmospheric carbon varies drastically depending on their individual life cycles and histories.

  3. Anyone have any clue where I can get a measuring tape for sea ice in Europe? The only supplier I have found is the very lovely and friendly Kovacs, but they are US based and the cost and time for delivery are crazy.

  6. Ref. 5. Mass balance and morphological changes of Dokriani Glacier (1992-2013), Garhwal Himalaya, India. Dobhal, D. P et al

The overall morphological changes that includes reduction ∼14% of total glacier area and enhancement of debris over the ablation zone (∼4%) during the study period is significant. The present study is a part of long ground based observations on retreat of glacier in the Himalayan region.

  10. Cryogenian (Geological periods 🌍)

The Cryogenian is a geologic period that lasted from 720 to 635 million years ago. It is the second of the three periods of the Neoproterozoic era, preceded by the Tonian and followed by the Ediacaran. The Cryogenian was a time of drastic climate changes. After the long environmental stability/stagnation during the Boring Billi...

  13. Tidewater glacier cycle (Glaciology 🗻)

The tidewater glacier cycle is the typically centuries-long behavior of tidewater glaciers that consists of recurring periods of advance alternating with rapid retreat and punctuated by periods of stability. During portions of its cycle, a tidewater glacier is relatively insensitive to climate change.

  14. Eight Swedish glaciers disappeared in 2024, expert says.

Eight of Sweden's 277 glaciers melted completely during 2024 and are now extinct due to global warming, the head of the Tarfala Research Station in northern Sweden has said.

Another 30 glaciers are at risk, glaciology professor Nina Kirchner said.

The extinct glaciers "won't come back in our lifetime and not if global warming continues", she said.

An urstromtal is a type of broad glacial valley, for example, in northern Central Europe, that appeared during the ice ages, or individual glacial periods of an ice age, at the edge of the Scandinavian ice sheet and was formed by meltwaters that flowed more or less parallel to the ice margin. Urstromtäler are an element of the glacial series. The term is German and means "ancient st...

The massive #iceberg, originally twice the size of Greater #London, has shrunk to less than half its size and is expected to disappear within weeks as warmer temperatures and large waves accelerate its breakup.

I found bargain deals on glaciologist Jemma Wadham's Ice Rivers from Allen Lane and novelist James Hamilton-Paterson's Stuck Monkey from Apollo. I also tracked down a copy of a 6th edition #Skaven army book. (I gave away my #Warhammer miniatures to a friend but have always loved the setting - I squarely blame Jordan Sorcery's channel for rekindling it.)

It is also approximately analogous to the Warthe and Saalian stages in northern Europe; the Riss glaciation in the Alps; an...

It was also the last and the shortest of at least three major ice ages in the Neoproterozoic era.

A moraine-dammed lake, occurs when the terminal moraine has prevented some meltwater from leaving the valley. When a glacier retreats, there is a space left over between the retreating glacier and the piece that stayed intact which holds leftover debris. Meltwater from both glaciers seep into this space creating a ribbon-shaped lake due to the pattern o...

  32. I really enjoyed @Felienne's narrative about narratives about Computer Science yesterday. She applied some of the ideas presented in the Glaciers, Gender and Science paper (journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/1) to her experiences in the Computer Science / Programming Languages communities. She's also starting a reading club to brainstorm the meaning (and the name?) of the field of "Computer Science".

Ice is water that is frozen into a solid state, typically forming at or below temperatures of 0 °C, 32 °F, or 273.15 K. It occurs naturally on Earth, on other planets, in Oort cloud objects, and as interstellar ice. As a naturally occurring crystalline inorganic solid with an ordered structure, ice is considered to be a mineral. Depending on the presence of impurities such as pa...
