  2. Apple’s Video Podcast Play: Consumption Solved, Creation Wide Open

Apple announced today that Apple Podcasts is getting video streaming support. Starting with iOS 26.4, you’ll be able to watch video podcasts right in the app, toggle seamlessly between audio and video, and download for offline viewing. It’s powered by HLS, supports dynamic ad insertion, and launches with a handful of hosting partners.

This is clearly a response to YouTube eating their lunch. Video podcasts have exploded, and Apple’s been watching from the sidelines while creators flocked to YouTube for the reach and Spotify for the features. This move makes sense.

But here’s what caught my attention. Jason Snell, writing at Six Colors:

Interesting, you know what Apple doesn’t have? A podcast creation app in its brand new creative suite. Hmmm.

He’s right. Apple just shipped a whole suite of creative tools, and podcasting — one of the most democratic forms of media creation — didn’t make the cut.

    Consumption vs. Creation

Apple is really good at consumption. Apple Podcasts is a fine player. Apple Music is great. The TV app aggregates your streaming services. They’ve nailed the “lean back and enjoy” experience.

But creation? That’s a different story.

GarageBand is ancient. Logic is powerful but intimidating. If you want to record a podcast with a remote guest, sync up the tracks, edit out the ums, and export something clean — you’re cobbling together a workflow from five different apps and services.

The podcast hosting companies Apple partnered with today (Acast, Simplecast, etc.) handle distribution. But the actual making of the podcast? That’s still surprisingly painful, especially for anyone who isn’t already neck-deep in audio production.

    The Gap

YouTube solved this by being YouTube — you just upload a video. The creation tools are wherever you already edit video. But for audio-first podcasters who want to add video, or remote recording setups, or anything more sophisticated than “point a camera at your face” — the tooling is fragmented and expensive.

Riverside. Squadcast. Zencastr. Descript. They’re all solving pieces of this, but there’s no simple, native, “it just works” solution. Apple could build this. They probably should. But today’s announcement suggests they’re more interested in the distribution side.

That leaves a gap. And gaps are interesting.

    What I’m Watching

I think the podcasting tools space is about to get a lot more attention. Apple validating video podcasts as a format brings more creators into the space, and those creators are going to need better tools.

If you’re building in this space — or thinking about it — now’s the time.

I’m a Forward Deployed Engineer at WordPress VIP by day and an indie app developer by night. I’ve been thinking a lot about podcasting tools lately. More on that soon.

  8. Finally got around to finishing the basement blocking for the A and B buildings.

Map blocking has taken a lot of steam over the ~84 hours I've worked on the level. I am putting off making the lower level sub-basement for a later time. (That will end up being another 8-10 hours of in-engine work.)

Next thing I am working on is my optimized (and complicated) elevator system.

  10. Finished blocking in my Sergal base mesh for my game's character. All these shapes will be merged together to make a sculpting base where I can add a lot more intricate detail.

As head/facial features vary among different ethnicities of Sergal, I'll be making a Southern and Northern head mesh to graft on later, just as I'll be making the hands and feet separately to graft on in place of the mitten hands and sock feet.

  12. Very early work in progress of the base mesh for my game's character. Lots to do still and lots to fix, but I need to get some sleep for today.

The idea will be to tweak proportions and broad muscle details, merge everything together, then sculpt in more details and niceties while tweaking anything else that needs it, make him some clothes, retop him, and then texture and rig him for animation.

I needed a break from the 2.5 month grind of whiteboxing my game's world.

  14. My final progress update for May; I'm about 80% done with blocking in a floor plan for my game.

The overview screenshots don't look too impressive until you peel away one of the roof layers of a building and realize that the entire building is as crazy and as complex as it is.

There is still a basement and sub-basement to go for the two largest buildings. Both basements and sub-basements will add about another full floor's worth of explorable space to their respective buildings.

  16. Consider this videogame feature:

A button that you can push to get your character to say something context-sensitive to the situation they're in. No interface prompts and everything is off-the-cuff related to your situation whenever you trigger the feature.

Remarks can be an outstanding vital that needs attention, a comment on a new item you're looking directly at, something about the area you're in, or any other response to environmental stimulus like hearing an enemy in another room.

It's basically a button to get your character to say what they're thinking or to make your character verbally respond to something in the environment.

  20. Made some good progress on blocking in a nursing floor for my game. The floor itself is about 25% planned.

I am loving how everything is coming together; every area of the level is visually busy, but still interesting and organized because everything has a purpose.

  23. Got a new "space game"* video showing off the ship airlock functionality - this one took a few days work and some back-and-forth support with the asset dev, but got there in the end :D

  24. Been busy with "Space Game" but kept hitting various issues with the asset I'm using, so decided to continue modelling the player ship and mock up a short approach and docking move with a larger ship:

  26. Spent some time reworking the sit/stand logic setup and finally got something approaching decent that I can show!

Still need to tweak some camera positions and movement, and there's an issue where it seems to unpause player interaction after the chair rotates, but overall happy with progress so far.

FYI this was an absolute pain to set up the logic for... might break it down sometime as a post
