I've ended up with #Bazzite #Gnome, modern #AMD and it works great. 2GB VRAM allocated on #iGPU with latest BIOS update (set to auto). Until I bring in more DDR4 and a dGPU SFF, this will do. O is extremely happy, game controller from #Stadia has a new life, a second hand monitor for 20€ and wired network. It boots into #SteamOS, desktop mode Gnome is available for homework. #Windows is so last decade. Current gen will game on #Linux. Work on Linux. And #Microsoft will try to enforce Windows for corporate, sweeten the #Azure licenses to have IT migrate to self-hosted Linux servers.

Despite the hate and perhaps bad value, I'd still totally get the #SteamMachine if it was available officially here - or if I were to be in a place where it's available in-store for its MSRP. People complain abt its performance and pricing, which may indeed be justified and I do agree to some extent, but it's kinda ridiculous to think it's unexpected.
PC part prices have literally been shit in the past ~2 years and continue to become shittier thanks to the #OpenAI/#AI bubble. The #SteamDeck was sold at a much better value bcos it was subsidised and #Valve had reason to subsidise it, they now 1) don't have the same reason to subsidise the Steam Machine - the goal is to expand #SteamOS/#Linux use among gamers and it's working, with or without selling Steam Machines to people, and 2) again, have u looked at PC part prices in the last couple of months? DDR4 (yes DDR4, not even DDR5) #RAM sticks I've been eyeing on that used to be sold at ~1k MYR is now being sold for almost ~7k. Even the previously subsidised Steam Deck was not able to escape the price hike.
Performance-wise, I think what's wrong with Valve's marketing was marketing it as a '4K60 #gaming machine', like other console and GPU makers like to do - and they're never true. They shd just market it as an 1080p gaming box that can reach higher framerates, quality settings, and even resolution (like 1440p) vs the Steam Deck and dats it, cos that's what it really is, and exactly what I want. I already have a baller Linux gaming PC I could use, but it's also used for work, and it's also loud as fuck. Just like how the Steam Deck ended up being my primary gaming machine for games from #Steam and even #GOG/#EpicGames/#Emulation, despite the existence of my on-paper more superior PC, the Steam Machine would've been a great upgrade to that for better framerates, graphics fidelity, while still being a really quiet box.
Based on my observation over the years, the Steam Deck ended up being a favourite among #Apple users (i.e. those who wouldn't have gotten a gaming PC of their own), and console gamers (who wish for a broader and more open gaming ecosystem). The Steam Machine I reckon will end up serving the same group of people, just a much smaller group of people due to its price. What's more interesting tho is the increasing number of PCs out there being sold/marketed as a SteamOS box alternative to the Steam Machine, like the #Framework Desktop. The more people we get away from #Windows, the more people who get to experience an open gaming ecosystem instead of being locked down to a single vendor, marketplace, gaming controllers even, and having to pay monthly subscriptions just to get online and have access to their fucking save files (not even physically, on cloud), the better. -

#linux could be a solution for all of us #gamers who have had enough of the industry fooling around.
There seem to be several attempts to provide a good-to-great gaming experience, starting with Valve's #steamos, but also #baocera or even #bazzite Linux.
I will look into it this year, I guess. Using some kind of a Mini PC, probably one from Minis Forum, with an OCuLink interface and AMD hardware. RAM and SSD memory are expensive, but this won't change for quite a while, so I have to deal with it.
What do I expect as an outcome? Control over my games. Mainly at #steam and #gog, and hopefully #nvidia #geforcenow up and running for high-end gaming.
