Unfortunately, this is widespread even outside the US. When I graduated, learning that these clauses were common at the few companies with hiring power here in Portugal was one of the reasons why I chose to go down the indie route.

If you're in a position to do so, push back against these! We're a creative medium, and our personal work should remain ours. What employees do outside working hours is their own business, and not their employer's.
