  4. Ever wondered what James Bond would look like if he grew up in South London with a chip on his shoulder and better taste in trainers?

*Kingsman: The Secret Service* takes the spy genre, flips it, and adds extra flair (and body count).

  6. Bulldog Drummond’s Secret Police (1939), a late entry in the series. There's hidden treasure, a cypher, secret passage-ways, good action scenes. Sounds like fun, but it isn't. It's dull. Spectacularly fails to capture the magic of the novels.

  11. The Deadly Affair (1967), based on a John le Carré novel. James Mason is excellent as George Smiley. Has a drab depressing totally appropriate visual style. Effectively bleak, not bad but has major flaws and was predictably a box office flop.

  16. I watched Argylle. I guess it does for spy movies what Jupiter Ascending did for space operas, but not as enjoyably. It has some fun moments, but didn’t quite hit the mark for me. If you want a VERY silly spy romance, this may be the film for you. John Cena was criminally under-utilized, though. I will say this much: the chase scene at the beginning of the movie is a wonderful parody of chase scenes. #movie #SpyMovies #Romance #comedy #action #Argylle

  17. OSS 117: Mission to Tokyo 1966 is a lighthearted 1966 French eurospy movie. The world is held to ransom by a crime organisation with a super-weapon. Superspy OSS 117 is in Japan with two dangerous women to deal with. Energetic stylish fun.

  18. Never Say Never Again (1983), Sean Connery's disappointing return to the role. A remake of Thunderball, it has its moments and it’s not terrible but it’s no more than a very average spy thriller and you expect a lot more from a Bond movie.

  23. OSS 117: Mission for a Killer (1965), a solid French eurospy film that starts with a a series of suicide bombings in South America. Possibly the best of the OSS117 series. With three beautiful dangerous women. Stylish, and pure high-octane fun.

  25. Movies about spies have been popular since the silent era — who could resist these stories of secret derring-do? CrimeReads reckons war is an especially fertile backdrop for espionage tales. Here's their list of the best spy movies set in WWII.

  26. Ice Station Zebra (1968), one of my favourite Alistair MacLean adaptations. More a low-key espionage drama than an action movie but there's suspense and danger on the ice and under it.

Patrick McGoohan makes a fine spy hero. He gets good support from Rock Hudson and Ernest Borgnine.

  28. The main problem with Carol Reed's NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (1940) starring Margaret Lockwood is that you're going to compare it to THE LADY VANISHES with which it has a lot in common. Not as good as Hitchcock's film but a decent train thriller.

  29. After watching various spy movies and detective shows, I now realize that I have no skills a criminal or a spy would find useful. My relatives are safe. No one is going to kidnap them to coerce me into creating a project plan. #spymovies #70sdetectives

  30. Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), superior in every way to his ill-advised 1956 remake.

This is a tense hard-hitting spy thriller and one of the first movies to deal with terrorism. One of Hitchcock's most violent movies.

Great performances by all cast members with Peter Lorre the standout.

  31. Fantomas (1964), first of the popular French Fantomas adventure/crime films. Superficially with a lot in common with the eurospy movies of the 60s. Certainly influenced by the success of the Bond movies.

Based on the early 20th century Fantomas novels.

Fantomas is one of the great diabolical criminal masterminds.

    Great stylish fun.

  32. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) marked the beginning of the extraordinary run of great British thrillers made by Alfred Hitchcock in the 1930s. His first spy thriller.

With Peter Lorre in great form as a sinister assassin, and the Albert Hall scene is one of Hitch's first great visual set-pieces.

Much better than his ill-advised 1956 remake.

  33. What am I hoping for here? Discussions about classic movies, horror movies and cult movies obviously. Most cult genres from the 30s to the 80s. And vintage popular fiction genres. Mostly I like stuff that the mainstream regards as trash. So, some hashtags.

I write #YA and #Adult #romcoms. My next book, THE SPY AND I comes out in 2024 from Berkley/Penguin Random House. I'm hoping to find some fellow #writing, #publishing, #author, and #romancelandia friends! I also like #nailart, #graphicdesign, and #spymovies (probably obvious since I wrote a spy book ...) Happy to be here!
