  9. The ticket’s as faded as my memory of this movie. Four psychiatric patients on the loose in New York - hilarity ensues. Hard to imagine this being made in 2026.

  10. “Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count.”

Teen movies weren’t supposed to be this bleak. Or this funny.

  11. This would’ve been my first time seeing Blade Runner on the big screen — the original theatrical cut. The superior Director’s Cut was still a few years away. What more is there to say? One of the greatest films ever made.

  12. I seem to recall an awful lot of fuss around this when it came out. As an Art student at the time, I probably convinced myself I liked Peter Greenaway more than I actually did. It looks stunning though and Helen Mirren & Michael Gambon are always great value.

  13. Unlike Back to the Future Part II, this sequel really disappointed me at the time. I’ve rewatched the original Ghostbusters countless times over the years, but I don’t think I’ve revisited this even once. Maybe I should give it another go.

  14. Happy Valentine's Day!

This was a big deal in the UK — one of those films you went to see because it was in the zeitgeist. Three weeks at number one at the box office. Let’s see if Wuthering Heights can do that. Different times.

  15. I really enjoyed the tense, claustrophobic underwater thriller side of The Abyss — all the stuff about pressure, personalities clashing, and things slowly going wrong. I’ve never loved the last 20 minutes though. Once it fully leans into the alien side of things, I could have done without all of that.

Those paying attention will notice that I went to see this the same day as Wilt. Quite a contrast.

  16. My main memory of this one is that Griff Rhys Jones, who lived locally, did a brief Q&A before the showing — and that the film wasn’t as funny as the book.

  17. Robin Williams playing it straight was a real revelation for me in the late ’80s. I was never that keen on his manic comedy persona, but I loved him in this.

  18. I mean, how could you not go and see a film called Amsterdamned? This one has a synth-driven Euro-thriller soundtrack that Garth Marenghi would be proud of, plus a great boat chases through the canals of Amsterdam.

  19. Buddy cop movies were a big deal in the ’80s, but they’ve quietly gone out of fashion. Not a massive fan of Mel Gibson these days, which kind of takes the shine off the Lethal Weapon movies.

  20. It’s difficult to overstate just how pumped me and my friends were for Batman in 1989. Just that teaser poster alone had us in giddy with excitement. Just as Roger Moore is my Bond, Keaton is my Batman. Looking back it’s all a bit patchy, but we didn’t care at the time.

  21. I was deep into special make-up effects around this time, and this was directed by one of the greats, Chris Walas. Apparently it was a troubled production, but I wouldn’t have cared — as long as there was plenty of slime and gore on screen.

  22. My main memory of this is that it was a 15 certificate, which felt like a big deal for a Bond film at the time. It also had some genuinely great stunts.

  23. I was 11 when Raiders came out but 19 by the time The Last Crusade arrived. Star Wars feels very much like my childhood, but I was older when this one came out — and it still completely charmed me. Something the two films that followed never quite managed to pull off.

  24. Tom Hanks’ name may be above the title, but Joe Dante was the real draw. Like Sam Raimi, he was one of those directors that my film-loving friends and I gravitated towards. Apparently this originally had a much darker ending until Hanks was cast — would have loved to have seen that version too.

  25. Not sure how it stacks up now, but I have a strong memory of this being funny in 1989. Even if the funniest moment in the trailer wasn’t in the finished film. Just discovered that it was in fact a remake of Bedtime Story starring Marlon Brando and David Niven. Brando & Niven!

  26. Anyone remember this Kevin Dillon remake of the Steve McQueen classic? Me neither — and I’ve seen it. Interesting fact: it was written by Frank Darabont, who of course went on to write and direct The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

  27. Before Richard Curtis gave us Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually, there was The Tall Guy — his first full-length screenplay, and the directorial debut of Mel Smith, who also pops up in a memorable cameo. Worth seeking out.

  28. I hadn’t seen Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, nor was I particularly familiar with Michael Keaton, but I do remember being really into Beetlejuice back in 1988. The low-fi look and quirky humour felt unlike anything I’d seen at the time, and Danny Elfman’s score is still an absolute banger.

  29. It’s really all about the barbershop scenes, isn’t it. Rick Baker’s make-up and Eddie Murphy’s performances — the perfect combination. I’d have happily paid £2.50 just for that.

  30. The Goonies mashed up with classic movie monsters, written by Shane Black and directed by Fred ‘Night of the Creeps’ Dekker. Right in my late-’80s wheelhouse. Currently available on Amazon if you fancy it.

  31. When I saw Broadcast News, I had no idea I’d end up working in live television myself.
That bit where they rush the tape through the studio — I’ve seen that happen!

  32. “I watched Someone to Watch Over Me the other night. I thought it was a really good movie. It’s a great movie.”
    — Ridley Scott

I don’t remember much about this one, but who am I to argue with Ridley’s assessment of his own film?

  35. Prince of Darkness (1987), one of my favourite John Carpenter movies. A terrible ancient secret is awakening. Very creepy, great visuals, lots of weirdness and dread. Interesting haunted house variant. Donald Pleasence is superb.

  36. Gor (1987) removes everything provocative and interesting and original from John Norman's excellent first Gor novel. It becomes a stock-standard barbarian warrior adventure movie that lacks pace and energy. Very tame and very disappointing.

  37. Too Beautiful To Die (1988), an incredibly underrated giallo set in the glittering but empty world of high fashion and supermodels in Milan. I love the over-the-top 80s aesthetic. Very stylish, very decadent, very fetishistic. Great stuff.

  38. In The Black Cat (1981) Lucio Fulci takes Poe's story as a starting point and then builds a new story. Two young lovers have vanished. A crazy professor (played by Patrick Magee!) talks to the dead. He has a psychic link to his cat. Great movie.

  39. Paul Verhoeven goes medieval in Flesh + Blood (1985). Very dark, grim, grungy. Rutger Hauer in anti-hero mode as a 16th century mercenary (he butchers a nun early on). Uncomfortable viewing. Not a trace of romanticism or idealism. Great movie.

  40. Charles Band's Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn is a 1983 post-apocalyptic scifi movie with a bit of a western vibe and a Mad Max vibe. There's also crazy mystical stuff, dimension-jumping and a great villain. Cheesy fun.

  41. Vampire Hunter D (1985), groundbreaking sci-fi/Wild West/vampire anime that can't quite match the visual splendour of the 2000 sequel but offers brilliant concepts, vampiric eroticism, great world-building and lots of mayhem. Superb stuff.

  42. Antonio Margheriti's Yor: The Hunter from the Future (1983). About a prehistoric hunter but that's not really what's going on. Looks terrific. Fast-moving, action-packed. Feisty sexy women. Has monsters and villains and crazy twists. Terrific.
