@REEL sez: Possession https://freq.org.uk/reviews/films/possession/ To be fair, you can see why this film would have been annoying / perplexing to reviewers back in 1981, and many of those issues remain. It is genre-(and gender-)bending in every way. Is it a #monstermovie? A #psychologicalthriller? A #spyfilm, even, with heavily codified #coldwar chic? #filmreview

"Batman Theme", the title song of the 1966 #Batman TV series, was composed by #NealHefti. This song is built around a guitar hook reminiscent of #spyFilm scores and #surfMusic. It has a #twelveBarBlues progression, using only three chords until the #coda. The music was performed by "#theWreckingCrew" with #TommyTedesco on the guitar, #CarolKaye on bass and other studio musicians that dominated the music scene.

The Deadly Affair (1967), based on a John le Carré novel. James Mason is excellent as George Smiley. Has a drab depressing totally appropriate visual style. Effectively bleak, not bad but has major flaws and was predictably a box office flop.

OSS 117: Mission to Tokyo 1966 is a lighthearted 1966 French eurospy movie. The world is held to ransom by a crime organisation with a super-weapon. Superspy OSS 117 is in Japan with two dangerous women to deal with. Energetic stylish fun.

Giving Netflix's Gal Gadot spy flick Heart of Stone a try. It's watchable nonsense, but very predictable spy/action tropes mean there's little tension because you pretty much can guess where it is going.

Watching Ipcress File with dad, remember reading Len Deighton in my teens. Reached the classic 60s brainwashing scene, something you rarely see in a modern spy film, but laundering of cognitive processes was all the rage back then.
