The first time I watched The Lair of the White Worm, it was with a friend in college who was a huge cult movie fan.

She insisted that the best way to watch it was to keep a running tally of all the phallic symbols in the movie -- and she was absolutely right.

If you haven't seen it before, it's a great film to watch with friends, and it includes impossibly young Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi, plus Amanda Donohoe at her campy-sexy best. In the US it's available to stream for free in several places at the moment. (In other regions your luck may vary.)

I can see why people didn’t like Beyond the Black Rainbow but it spoke to me of psychonaut John Lilly and the world my head inhabited in the late 80s. That of course links it with Altered States and the works of Ken Russell, although Cosmatos and Russell are very different… John Lilly characteristically liked Altered States despite or perhaps because of its absurdity.
