Watched some of Calling Paul Temple last night on #Tubi¹. This is a 1948 film, so it doesn't have the suboptimal sound mix that some modern films have. Yet whoever was doing the captioning had problems.
At the 17:40 mark, Paul Temple (John Bentley), current mystery novelist and amateur detective, asks Sir Graham Forbes (Jack Raine), Scotland Yard Chief with whom Temple served in WW2, a question regarding a string of murders of wealthy women, where the name or word "REX" was written at each crime scene. #ClassicMovie
The question Paul asked was “Is there any trace of a motive common to all of them?” However, what the #captions portray is “There's only place of a motive, (mumbles)?” This is only one of several places in which the captioner heard only mumbling. #VintageFilm
