Alcatraz ist in der Popkultur schon lange weniger ein Gefängnis als ein Mythos. Der Felsen in der Bucht von San Francisco steht für Isolation, staatliche Macht und die Vorstellung eines Ortes, aus dem eigentlich keine:r entkommen kann. Don Siegel nimmt diesen Mythos vollkommen ernst – und zerlegt ihn zugleich. Die Literaturverfilmung basiert auf dem Sachbuch „Escape from Alcatraz“ des Autors J. Campbell Bruce, das die Fluchtgeschichte aus dem Hochsicherheitsgefängnis detailliert rekonstruiert hat. Mit Clint Eastwood. (ARTE, Wh.)

Alles andere als ein „klassischer“ Western. Auch wenn mit Don Siegel ein Genreveteran Regie geführt hat und mit Clint Eastwood ein kommender Superstar ganz oben auf den Plakaten stand. Es ist allein Shirley MacLaine, die diesen Film zusammenhält. Sie ist das Zentrum, der Störfaktor, das Maultier, das den Regeln des Genres nicht gehorcht. Don Siegel wusste, dass er eine Figur braucht, die Eastwoods Fassade sprengt. Und mit MacLaine bekam er genau das – eine scharfe, ironische, unberechenbare Geheimwaffe. (ARD)

Audie Murphy made some great westerns. The Duel at Silver Creek (1952) is not one of them. It does however look great and is fun in a movie junk food sort of way. Don Siegel directed so there's plenty of fine action. I enjoyed it.

Don Siegel's Charley Varrick (1973) stars Walter Matthau as a crop-duster pilot and part-time bank robber. Charley has inadvertently stolen Mob money and he's in big trouble. A rollercoaster of an action movie and it’s pretty dark. Good movie.
