  3. I got thinking of the Scala Cinema cuz last night I watched The Ladykillers (1955) (shown in #SundayFunnies #WatchParty a few weeks ago but I missed it) & started recognizing buildings.

"Is that St Pancras station?" then a bit later "F%&k me, that's the Scala!" That distinctive turret on top.

  5. If the Headless Horseman and the Predator had a child and left him in the woods to be raised by stereotypical Native Americans whose only knowledge of civilization comes from Masters of the Universe, that child would be Skeleton Man (2004) — aka Cottonmouth Joe.

  7. Streets of Fire looks like a music video, moves like a cartoon, and thinks like a bar fight. Great songs, killer vibes—and a macho fantasy so outdated it punches itself in the face.
Full review: A rock-and-roll fairy tale that can't decide if it's sincere, ironic, or just plain dumb.

  8. “What if the real monster was… narrative insecurity?” My breakdown of M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water — a film that can’t decide if it’s a bedtime story or a sacred text. 12. House of Frankenstein (1944) is one of Universal's monster rally movies. A jumble of not very original ideas but well-executed, it looks good and has a great cast led by Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr and Lionel Atwill. Fun despite its flaws.

  13. Count Dracula’s Great Love (1973), Spanish vampire film starring and written by Paul Naschy. Contrary to the popular critical view this is an excellent, intelligent, emotionally nuanced, clever, provocative, trashy, sleazy take on Dracula.

  14. The Playgirls and the Vampire (1962). A bevy of beautiful showgirls stranded when their bus breaks down, they take shelter in a gothic castle and of course the castle belongs to a vampire. Silly goofy Italian gothic horror fun. You'll needs lots of popcorn.

  15. Shadow of the Cat (1961) is sort of a Hammer film. Stars Barbara Shelley. There's a mysterious disappearance, and a cat out for revenge. A hybrid of 1960s Hammer psychological thriller and gothic horror. Unusual and worth seeing.

  16. Beyond the Door (AKA The Devil Within Her 1974) is one of the more notorious Italian Exorcist rip-offs and it rips off Rosemary's Baby as well. It's OK and has some fine moments but there are much better Italian Exorcist rip-offs.

  17. Mission Bloody Mary (1965), first of the hugely entertaining Agent 077 eurospy films. With a stolen H-bomb and equally dangerous women. Stylish but gritty. Well-plotted, fast-paced and action-packed, very enjoyable. And available on DVD!

  18. The Cats (I bastardi, 1968) is a dark cynical eurocrime movie about violent psychos with an insane twist ending I can guarantee you won't see coming. It stars Rita Hayworth and Klaus Kinski. Totally nuts but fascinating. Worth seeing.

  19. The Black Cat (1966), a very low-budget adaptation of Poe’s famous story. This is Poe in the world of crazy rock’n’roll music, miniskirts and go-go dancing. It works better than you'd expect. A very dark very gothic very effective horror film.

  20. Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (1947), last of the Dick Tracy B-movies. Lots of horror and sci-fi elements in this one, plus Boris Karloff as the chief villain. Fast-moving and slightly offbeat. And Ralph Byrd is a fine Dick Tracy. Hugely enjoyable.

  21. Never Say Never Again (1983), Sean Connery's disappointing return to the role. A remake of Thunderball, it has its moments and it’s not terrible but it’s no more than a very average spy thriller and you expect a lot more from a Bond movie.

  22. The Fat Black Pussycat (1963) is a beat murder mystery about a beatnik psycho serial killer and a cat (an actual feline) that picks up human brain waves. Half-baked psychiatry and half-baked paranormal phenomena adds up to crazy oddball fun.

  23. Watched Phantom of the Paradise and am just floored.
Might be my fav phantom adaption, and I loved the directorial choices throughout the movie, it is such an interesting, uncomfortable shooting style - bringing us constantly too close or at a wrong angle.
I especially loved how it keeps framing us into one side of the mask, focusing on his wide-open eye.

Makes me wanna check out more of De Palma's lesser known works
