  2. This is a horrific invasion of #privacy & public pillorying of minors!

#Trump admin demand for #trans care info sought addresses, doctors’ notes, texts

  3. Last night at a Korora concert in #yeg, I heard this wonderful text sung beautifully by the treble voices choir ChandraTala.
The song is called “On Children” from Ysaye Barnwell… the world needs a lot more of this kind of thinking right now…

“Your children are not your children
[…] though they are with you
    They belong not to you.”

  4. 'love and respect demand that every human child be treated not as “the property of parenting adults to do with as they wish” but as their own person with their own rights. “When we love children,” hooks reminds us, “we acknowledge by our every action that they are not property, that they have rights—that we respect and uphold their rights.” '

  5. Parental Rights: A role-based approach
Hannan & Vernon, 2008, Theory and Research in Education

"If the parental role is justified by the prevention of irreversible damage to future choice, then it cannot, without self-contradiction, include the authority to control future choice in irreversible ways."

  6. Judging Parents
    Greene, R. W., & Hicks, D. (2018). In Judgment Calls (pp. 196-219).

"Put simply parental rights advocates are working to place the parent-child relationship outside of public deliberation and regulation."

  7. I get a little frustrated when people act like the Pacific Northwest is perfect for trans folk, like we didn’t pass a #ParentsRights bill this year in Washington.

Yes, it’s better to be trans here than many other places, but we can’t afford to be complacent. We must continually battle the forces of oppression. We gotta tread to keep our heads above the waterline.

  8. The hidden agenda behind the so-called Parents' Rights push
How parents' rights is a tool for Christian nationalism
    By Andra Watkins (2023)

"My ignorance was the prerogative of my parents' right to control what I learned about my body."

  9. Bill would require Utah teachers be politically ‘neutral’ in what they say and display in class
    Katie McKellar, Utah News Dispatch

From the article: "His goal is to “reassure parents""

Nothing to do with the interests of children, and everything to do with the interests of parents.

  10. Throughout the history of the United States, we've lept forward in development every time we deem a subset of people, once thought of and treated as property, worthy of the rights held by those thought of as full citizens. Emancipation, Suffrage, and Civil Rights for all were won through not only conflict and persistence, but also by a re-framing of the the issue at hand. Presently, we are at another one of these crossroads to prove ourselves.

Conservatives of the past and present have and continue to attempt to whitewash the South's reason for starting the US Civil War, saying it was about "states rights." But upon closer analysis, it's clear that it about the rights of states to determine the legality of slavery, of ownership of another human being. In the same way, conservatives of today raise a stink about "parents' rights" over their children. As soon as they're born, children are nothing more than property to these people, with a will to be broken and molded to whatever they desire. Parents and society have a responsibility to protect and raise their children, and both of them have a lot of power over children due to their lack of understanding and development. But we all know that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Children have rights; parents have responsibilities.

  12. I think some heteros have kids purely so they can be lord and master over another human being 😬

  14. @myeyesaredim The Supreme Court of Canada says that the right to be a parent or the right to control your child isn’t in the Charter. The courts said the right of a parent to parent their child can be found in section 7, but it’s never absolute because at the same time, a child is a human being, not property, and every human being has human rights, civil rights and charter rights. Those rights exist independent of parents. But #Postmedia #CdnMedia and the #Cons want #ParentsRights real bad.

  15. If you want to understand the parent's rights movement, you should read this ⬆️.

    Abstract snippet:

"The analysis reveals how care, love and gratitude for the shared home are core elements used in heteroactivist negotiations, with contextually established notions of gender equality and sexual rights as national values. It also demonstrates how the home, which these actors seek to cherish and protect, takes shape as an exclusive and exclusionary space."

  16. @CTHW Though a parent myself, I actually had no idea if some concept of #ParentsRights existed in Canadian Law. Only thing that came close was the right of parents to visit their biological kids in the event of divorce.

Mainly, the #RightsOfTheChild were the main results of my search. Parents have a responsibility to care for their kids, but they are people like us and have #HumanRights.

#KidsAreNotProperty - sad and disappointing that it has to be said in Canada.

  17. The thing about Moms For Liberty and that Hitler quote is that they meant it literally, not even as a warning about "big government." That was just cover for the apology. The Parents Rights movement is about the right to own your child and treat them as chattel, and it needs to be called out as such.
