Judge rebuffs #Trump admin demand for phone records from #NYT #reporters
After criticism from a federal judge, the Department of Justice yesterday withdrew demands for phone records and #grandjury testimony from New York Times reporters who wrote about #security concerns related to the #AirForceOne jet donated to Trump by #Qatar.
It was a setback in the Trump administration's attempts to unmask journalists' confidential sources. US District Judge Arun Subramanian "grilled Justice Department lawyers for nearly an hour over their handling of the #subpoenas " during a hearing on Thursday, The New York Times wrote.

The #subpoenas contain few specifics, asking only that the #journalists testify “in regard to an alleged violation of federal criminal law.” They were issued by #JayClayton, the #USattorney in Manhattan. Clayton, who leads one of the country’s most prominent law enforcement offices, was recently nominated by #Trump to serve as director of national intelligence [ #DNI ].

The 9th Circuit upheld an important limitation on Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) subpoenas that other federal courts have recognized for more than 2 decades. The DMCA, a misguided anti-piracy law passed in the late 90’s, created a bevy of powerful tools, ostensibly to help #copyright holders fight online #infringement. Unfortunately, the DMCA’s powerful protections are ripe for abuse by “copyright trolls”

In addition to the #Clintons, the Republican-led panel issued #subpoenas for #depositions from James Comey, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, Robert Mueller, William Barr, Jeff Sessions & Alberto Gonzales [all perceived enemies of #Trump]. #Republicans on the cmte said they are seeking information from these officials regarding the #JeffreyEpstein files.

#House #Oversight Cmte Chair #JamesComer issued numerous #subpoenas on Tues -- including one to the #DOJ for the COMPLETE #JeffreyEpstein files & another for #depositions w/ President #BillClinton & fmr Secy of #State #HillaryClinton.
Comer said he wants the DOJ to turn over the "full, complete, unredacted Epstein Files" on or before Aug. 19.
