  7. CW: Mutual aid, IT stuff, Looking for Info

Does anyone know what's a good way to get semi-cheap USB drives in bulk that aren't basically faulty out of the factory?

I live in Australia, and we're pretty much about to enter an information dark age over here, with ID verification demanded by almost the entire internet here- while feeding the ID verification stack through a government-owned proprietary digital ID system.

SO, I want to start keeping a stockpile of USB flash drives with TailsOS flashed to them, along with a hand-manual of sorts for regular people to get started with understanding it and learning to use Gnome through it.

That way, i can start giving these to everyone i'm acquainted with to continue to hide their traffic online when discussing anything our fucked government deems "sensitive" in some capacity.

They do not need to be large- 16gb or even 32gb is MORE than enough for a majority of people's use cases for Tails. Most people probably won't even have any encrypted storage on their setup.

I have no idea how to source things like this, so i'd appreciate the information!

  16. RE: fediscience.org/@oatp/11643887

"Maximal transparency is almost certainly not ethically desirable."

    Desirable 'for whom'?

For platforms facing regulatory scrutiny, opacity is a feature. For users discriminated against by biased recommendation engines, transparency is survival. For communities targeted by algorithmic manipulation, openness is a civil liberty.

This paper usefully breaks transparency into dimensions and degrees—providing the "choice points" for an ethics of algorithmic openness. But let us be clear: the stakeholders who need transparency most are rarely the ones invited to design these systems.

Our job as advocates for privacy, free software, and civil liberties is not to settle for the "ethically optimal" comfort zone of the powerful. It is to push the needle toward the maximum and let the burden of justification fall on those who demand secrecy.

Let us use it to demand more.

  26. doing a college paper on my stance on Internet privacy, and my experiences with it in my own life... but it requires scholarly research, has anyone smarter than me (preferably an expert in the subject) who is currently on Fedi done research into the matter? a paper, maybe?

preferably something of an anti-censorship and anti-government meddling stance, but i dont think i need to ask that considering all of us use a decentralized service xd

many thanks to all that might participate, ill be sure to credit you in the citations :]

  30. DOJ lawyer Eric Neff mislead a court about voter roll data collection, initially claiming no analysis had begun, but later admitted the DOJ was pooling and analyzing data from multiple states to identify "duplicate and deceased" voters. This confirms fears that Trump's administration is using sensitive voter information—including Social Security numbers and addresses—to attack elections ahead of midterms. Critics warn this effort, driven by inexperienced but loyal DOJ lawyers supporting election denial theories, threatens privacy and undermines democratic integrity. Courts have already dismissed cases in several states. What's next? Wired has been doing excellent work reporting on where politics meets tech.
